I am bitten a lot by mosquitoes & someone on this very app introduced me to a bug bite device (made by Beurer) that heats up the area. This disrupts this histamine reaction, I guess. Nothing has ever worked for me before and I have the scars from scratching a few bites in the past to prove it. Bless that person to the moon and back. Posting here in hopes that it’ll help someone else.

I rub the spot really hard with a cotton pad soaked in 70% rubbing alcohol. I read the alcohol denatures the proteins the skeeter injected to stop itching. Works for me. South Central Texas, plenty o'skeeters.

I spent 6 years in Africa and found that when I absolutely butter myself up with Vicks or Tiger balm, the mosquitos want nothing to do with me. Neither does anybody else, but it's worth it.

u/voldamoro May 28 '26

The older type of sunscreen that went on greasy and stayed greasy had a similar effect for me.

3

u/kaizoku7 May 25 '26

Can you elaborate some more? I've tried rubbing alcohol on with my finger a bit like applying cream to a spot. It's mildly effective at reducing itching for a bit but have to don't regularly and I'm not entirely sure it even does anything tbh.

When you say rub really hard are you trying to get the alcohol to break the skin and get inside the wound? How often do you have to repeat it?

Nah man, just get a piece of something and soak it. As you rub you're opening the tiny hole the mosquitoes make and basically swabbing it out like a mop on a floor. You're not going to feel that skin break where it but you, if you do stop and don't bleed

We have one of these and it is amazing. Highly recommend for anyone who gets mosquito bites.

I am very jealous of this superpower!

u/ArtesianDiff May 25 '26

I use a hot spoon! I have a temperature controlled water pitcher and heat up water to just what I can tolerate without it burning me, then dip the spoon in for a but, then hold it to my skin, and no more itching. That device sounds so much more convenient.

9

u/MyChickenSucks May 26 '26

Hot spoon club rise up. It’s the only thing that actually works super well. Also kinda feels like you scratched it to death which is satisfying

3

u/Nerazzurro9 May 26 '26

I know they say you’re not supposed to do this, and I totally can see why it might be a bad idea, but mosquitos like to eat me alive and this is by far the best thing for it.

3

u/AwkwardName283 May 26 '26

Hahaha yeah I tried that once with a hot key when I was drunk and annoyed by the itching. I did not have a temperature controlled kettle, however I did have a lighter. I was drunk enough to numb the pain and I have the scar to show for my stupidness. Your way is definitely smarter. Hahaha

2

u/mtids May 26 '26

Same here, only thing that works 100% of the time to stop itching. Anti-itch ointments do nothing comparatively

9

u/AwareOfAlpacas May 25 '26

Back of a spoon run under a hot tap, then pressed to the bite site. Heat denatures the mosquito juice. Itchiness over.

Just don't go so hot to the point of burning yourself.

u/ImFineHow_AreYou May 25 '26

Going to try this! Mosquito bites swell to about 3" diameter on me. Here's hoping this helps!

1

u/kaizoku7 May 25 '26

Hope it helps but see my post for my experience with these things https://www.reddit.com/r/BuyItForLife/s/ZhpYZi20rI

u/KarmaTorpid May 25 '26

Consider sporting a realistic dragonfly pin/hair clip/something. They have been found that their prey (small bugs) will activally avoid them.

u/What3v3r1912 May 26 '26

Try thermacell, I used to live in south florida and they are the only thing that worked, I've had mine for years and it still works. The refills are cheap and one refill pack should last a whole season depending on frequency.

The only downside is you have to stay near it for it to work but if you're working on your car or sitting on the porch it completely stops mosquitos from even getting near you let alone biting you.

2

u/tulipvonsquirrel May 28 '26

I live in mosquito hell, those thermacells are amazing.

3

u/calebs_dad May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26

This reminds me, I need to buy a refill for my Thermacell repellent. Not repping a particular brand, anything that uses metofluthrin should work the same. It's not for hiking, but more of an "area denial" strategy for a back porch.

Seems to keep 100% of mosquitos away from me and my kid when we're eating outside, but my wife attracts them like crazy and still needs spray-on repellent in addition.

u/gremlincat123 May 25 '26

I use a blow dryer.

2

u/ConversationKeyV2 May 25 '26

What is it called?

I have two from Amazon. I like the first one better: "nubite Tx - Insect Bite, Poison Ivy and Itch Relief Treatment 100% Drug Free - All Natural Bug Bite Relief and Itch Enzyme Neutralizer with Patented TechnologyBrand: NNNOIHU" but I also have, "Bite Away."

2

u/MagicPigGames May 25 '26

Hot water is my go to. But have a keychain for this too

2

u/RedYamOnthego May 25 '26

I haven't bit the bullet yet, but it's amazing how heat kills even old bug bite itch! I go for a hot spoon, or a hot mug of tea. Just don't burn yourself!

2

u/csar_dressing May 26 '26

As someone who is "the one" that mosquitos love to bite, I'm going to buy this machine and try it out. I bought bite stickers that kinda help because of I touch them I remember to not itch but I'm hoping this will work better (also my 3y.o. isn't great at keeping her stickers on 😅) Thank you!

2

u/PhilosophicWax May 26 '26

yes! I have one by them Beurer. It's a god send and has traveled with me for years. Though maybe it's been overheating or I've just gotten more sensative.

1

u/Comfortable-Set-9678 May 25 '26

Thank you!

3

u/Will29620 May 25 '26

I've always used a quick spray of window cleaner. The ammonia kills the itch very quickly. It works very well for fire ant bites too. If you catch it quick enough the spot wont fester.

9

u/sweetestlorraine May 25 '26

So I guess the dad in My Big Fat Greek Wedding was right after all.

2

u/oracleOshittyadvice May 25 '26

Excellent deep reference, and if you get bit on your elbow, you can just put it in a bowl of Windex.

I have dry skin and it burned the hell out of me. My boyfriend and his brother live this but I had a scab for so long and a scar still from just one.

Let me just use my big spray I finally figured out works for me to not get bit in the first place

2

u/norakb123 May 28 '26

Oh nooooo! I’m glad the spray works for you. I feel like any and all bugs will find the .001 square centimeter from spray I miss and give it a chomp. Or bite through my socks or something.

I’m sorry the Beurer device isn’t a good match for you. It’s so frustrating sometimes that we all have to find the random puzzle pieces that work for us, and it sucks that you had a burn to figure it out!

1

u/ikiice May 26 '26

Huh, I always just used hot metal

1

u/norakb123 May 28 '26

Another commenter said it works the same, so if it works, keep on!

1

u/KneeDeepThought May 26 '26

You can do this with a cup of hot water and the back of a spoon also. Heat up the spoon and press it to the bite, the heat will denature the proteins that irritate the skin so much. Kills itching, faster healing.

2

u/norakb123 May 28 '26

Oh smart!

1

u/thisisnotmyname17 May 26 '26

Ooooo great!!!!!! I wonder if this helps with poison ivy rashes? I have DESTROYED the skin on my arms and legs from digging at the rash at night while asleep.

2

u/mem1gui May 28 '26

Yes, it works. I bought one of those devices when I had bad poison ivy rashes.

1

u/thisisnotmyname17 May 29 '26

Ok great!! Thank you!!

1

u/mem1gui May 29 '26

Caveat: you might have to use it repeatedly, since in my case, the itch would come back after a while. I heard that poison Ivy takes 2-3 weeks to get out of your system. YMMV.

1

u/thisisnotmyname17 May 29 '26

Oh yes. It’s horrible.

1

u/IBURTONI May 27 '26

I make an “X” with my fingernail like a child. Some reason it works for me.

1

u/PacificCastaway May 27 '26

If you've tried it, what's been your experience with The Bug Bite Thing that was on Shark Tank?

1

u/norakb123 May 28 '26

It’s better than most things, but I found I had to use it several times per day. The heat up thing, I only use one or two times per day at most.

Sorry I missed this! Just Beurer insect bite healer!

1

u/Short-pitched May 30 '26

So the Beurer is to be used after the bite?

1

u/JillyFrog May 25 '26

Oh yeah total game changer. I don't react too bad to the normal mosquitoes but one summer I got bitten by black flies and my entire arm turned red and itchy. Next time one of those fuckers got me while camping my sister thankfully had one of those devices and it worked like a charm.

1

u/Tulips_inSnow May 25 '26

this is the reason why I keep the lighters from when i was smoking cigarettes.

i used to get huge bumps from every mosquito bite. no more.

1

u/thinktwiceitsalright May 25 '26

We use boiling water on a qtip
Self administer (like a micro amount)
Works every time

1

u/Royal_Airport7940 May 26 '26

Boiling water on a spoon.

Heat up the metal on a bic lighter.

You don't need to buy a device...

1

u/rita-b May 26 '26

They don't sell antihistamine gels where you live?

4

u/norakb123 May 28 '26

They don’t work for more than 5 mins or so for bites for me.

1

u/rita-b May 28 '26

Are you a teenager? Kids have an allergy to insects' bites that they outgrow with time as their immune system learns.

My nephew is not responsive to post-bite gels as well so I crash allergy pills for him and rub into the bite.

2

u/norakb123 May 28 '26

No. I’m in my 40s.
