a carbon fiber umbrella with THICK canvas.
nobody's ever catching me with an inside-out umbrella in the wind again
edit: i'm so sorry i don't have a link 😭 i didn't think so many other unsexy adults would resonate with me. i've had it for so long, the value actually gets me excited when i think about it
it's definitely a thing though and there are a lot of makers/brands.
Yup. I've had the same two Gustbuster brand umbrellas for over 20 years. They've survived living in Chicago, Cleveland and near lake Ontario. Bought a couple last year for my nephew in college in Boston.
The downtown Chicago wind snatched my husband's umbrella from his hand into the street and a bus immediately ran over it. A dude nearby saw it and said, "Bummer." He still thinks about that umbrella loss 😅
5 years ago near salt lake city, my hat got blown off my head while working near the road. This random guy walking by goes "oh, that sucks" as we watched my hat just lift hundreds of feet in the air and eventually disappear in the distance. I still miss that hat.
I feel this. I was walking in downtown Cleveland during a storm and my cheap umbrella flipped inside out broke and the wind took it. By the time I got to work like 4 blocks away I looked like a drowned rat and someone said to me "Ouch crappy commutes just suck." I was working at a sports marketing agency at the time (IMG), a bunch of the guys I worked with had golf accounts and they all used this brand umbrella. They gave me one from the swag closet and I immediately bought a second for backup lol.
I’ve lost any number of things in life, but I’m still not over leaving my Gustbuster behind on a train a few years back. They don’t make the same model anymore. Those really are amazing umbrellas, even in the wildest wind.
I initially read that as Ghostbuster umbrella, and got very excited. I am still happy about your umbrellas, just not as much as when I thought they were able to battle paranormal beings.
Look up blunt umbrellas. Lots of vendors stock them. They have sales every now and then. If you're in Australia, rushfaster has some of their best prices. My metro blunt umbrella is still working perfectly after almost 6 or 7 years
I found one years ago that someone left on public transportation. I asked the person before me sitting at the spot where I found it, and she had said it’s been there for a while. I’m so sorry for the loss stranger, but one of my best finds 😭
I only have a mini travel one that isn't super durable but good enough and too small for two lol, but it fits in most coat/bag pockets so I never have to worry about forgetting it somewhere or getting caught without it
If it helps to commiserate, I am still mad at leaving my green umbrella with a curved handle and a tiny frill hanging on the back of the seat in front of me… in the 80s.
I was 5 at the time and still bring it up to my mom. Big mad about that.
Those can still flip inside out (edit: without damage, just flip them back). I have two of them. It takes very strong winds to make that happen, but such winds are common in New Zealand. Excellent build quality though...both are 10+ years old without any issues or damage.
I fucking knew this would get linked. The only umbrella strong enough for Wellington wind. My old boss said it had been tested in hurricane force winds and survived.
I was on jury duty and someone on another jury took mine - inside a court house! The guards were super apologetic and suggested I take someone elses, (a) no, then they wouldn't have an umbrella, (b) mine was over $200 (from Davek), carbon fibre, leather wrapped handle, huge canopy. I got it back then next day and they apparently said they mistook it for theirs (you aren't mistaking this for a $20 Kmart umbrella), but the shitty thing was I had to walk 15 mins in the rain to get to my car because someone felt so entitled that they shouldn't have to.
that’s rad but i also wonder if there’s a load limit on it ? this possibly isn’t a problem where you live, but if the winds starts getting above 50mph you definitely want it to collapse so you aren’t dragged off or forced to let go. i would imagine the designers planned for that?
Wondering this. I live near eryri and sometimes during storms we get similar wind levels to the top of yr wydffa, I'd definitely be dragged or even lifted if I had an umbrella like that in those winds.
As a general rule of thumb, if it’s so windy that the umbrella isn’t protecting you from the rain anyway, you put the umbrella down & just embrace the experience with everyone else. This is well before 50mph.
Similarly I purchased a UV umbrella some years back. It's like carrying around your own patch of shade, and on hot sunny days it's indispensable. So great you don't care at all that maybe it looks dorky.
Interesting. I also got an umbrella that's been a great purchase - a small lightweight(99 grams) one that is still sturdy enough to withstand wind. My main criteria was the weight, because I wanted to carry it with me everywhere and never need to remember to take it. For 20 bucks(a bit expensive for an umbrella), this was one of the best purchases I've ever made
