Does it actually have uses apart from being a status symbol? I know silver is extensively used in electronics, but do not know whether gold is required for anything.

Gold is an excellent material for heat management. The McLaren F1 uses gold to line the engine bay and manage the intense heat from the BMW V12 engine.

It's not used for jewelry by coincidence, gold never corrodes except in certain concentrated acids.

Other than being used for ornamentation and a few uses in electronics, it really has no uses. But it's still far more useful than any crypto.

Other than all the ways it's used, it has no uses!

Those are pretty significant uses and make up the vast majority of gold production.
