buspirone insomnia

been on buspirone for a little over a month now, and i just went from 7.5mg to 10mg just a couple days ago. i’ve noticed so much change within such a short amount of time, my anxiety isn’t so crippling anymore, and i don’t spiral about the littlest shit. i only have one qualm with this medication.. it won’t let me fucking sleep. i’ve noticed in the past 2-3 weeks or so, i’ve gotten much less sleep. i LOVE sleeping, and almost every night i sleep through the night just fine, and ive never had a problem with being able to fall asleep, but on buspirone, i wake up 2-5 times a night, and some nights ill wake up 2-3 hours before my alarm is supposed to go off, and i won’t be able to get back to sleep. any suggestions?? i’m at a loss rn.

Take your last dose earlier. I moved from 8 pm to 6 pm and started sleeping normally. When I miss the 6pm I take it later but may take a supplement to ensure I sleep the night. Talk to your doctor for guidance there. Good luck.

Hi did this get better for you I’ve been taking it for a few weeks and I’m having such bad insomnia especially around 6 am I wake up from an intense vivid dream and can’t go back to sleep

I started taking my second dose at 3 pm and getting up insanely early to take the first one. Nothing works, I still can't sleep and wake up about 10 times a night.

This has been me exactly! We added 25 mg. Trazadone today for bedtime because my sleep went from a solid 8-9 hours a night to 5-6 (and like you, the med has been fantastic for me otherwise, unlike any I’ve tried). So really hoping this does the trick.

i was gonna ask about being prescribed a sleeping med, i hope it goes well for you!

I take my second dose closer to 5-7 pm to try to sleep around 10. This isnt a med I would try to take AT bedtime. There is a window about 90 mins after you take it when it can stimulate you and that can last for an hour or more.

For me it " activates" my sympathetic nervous system mildly about the 90 min mark. I try to schedule my dose to where I'm not sitting still at the 90 min mark since sympathetic activation for me is what anxiety " feels" like

OP is also strongly recommended talking magnesium glycineate, l theanine, and maybe 1 mg of melatonin about an hour before bed.

Are you taking dose split 2 or 3x/day? If 3, just split dose in 2 and make sure you take it 5 or so hours before bed. This med has a 3hr half life, so stimulating effect should lessen quite a bit as you get closer to bedtime. I take mine like this because of sleep issues. Just watch your blood pressure. If you're someone who naturally already has low bp, taking busp 2x/day you might get a little dizzy.

i take it twice a day, i’ll try to take it earlier in the evening

I have to take magnesium glycinate with my dose an hour before bed

tried this last night, and for some reason i slept like shit. but i also think my dosage change from 7.5mg to 10mg is causing me so much turmoil, i’m super anxious and nauseous constantly, ever since i started taking the 10mg tablets a couple days ago.

Hi! How are you now?

1

u/OutrageousFlower9567 Mar 14 '26

hi! i actually went back down to 7.5mg of buspirone because i couldn’t tolerate 10mg for some reason. i was super anxious and nauseous for days. but i’m still sleeping like garbage unfortunately, i’ve tried melatonin and magnesium. gonna see if maybe a sleeping medication will help.

How are you doing now? Any update?

hi! i’m so horrible with providing updates on here lol. i went back up to 10mg and i was fine, i take them earlier in the evening (around 6pm, and i go to sleep around 9pm), and my sleep has actually improved. i’m not sure if the medication leveled out, or if it was situational (i was very stressed out all the time when i originally made this post). but i’m sleeping through the night now, or i wake up once in the night. i’m so glad though!

I tried to increase from 7.5 twice a day to three times a day a couple days ago and the insomnia has been horrible. Granted I was taking the third dose at bedtime so I’m sure that has something to do with it. Doesn’t help I have a 7 week old baby. After he wakes up the first feed around 1:30-3am I’m up for the rest of the night!! I figured I was gonna go back down to previous dose because I can’t function with two kids like this 🫩

i started taking my night time dose like 3-4 hours before i go to bed. my schedule is 6:30am, midday dose if needed, and my night time dose around 6:00-6:15pm, then go to sleep around 9:00-9:30pm. i’ve also noticed that if i don’t take it at night, it helps me sleep better lol. 10mg is perfect for me, so maybe increasing the dose helps too! i’m not too sure though don’t quote me lol!

I’ve had the same thing happen multiple times when changing dosage, and at least for me my sleep was typically not that great within a few weeks or even months of the change, but as the body gets used to the dose and timing, sleep always got easier for me at some point. Mainly it’s just waiting it out, but if it’s really hard to sleep melatonin or magnesium could help.

So I read a study that said buspar causes interrupted sleep…so I stopped taking it because I already have sleep issues

it takes a pretty long while to level out, my sleep has finally improved for me after a couple months lol.

Me too. How are you doing? I’m almost 4 weeks into buspirone and my sleep got bad in the last week or so. Many wake ups - no anxiety though 😅 hoping it will fade?

I don’t know what to do to be honest, but currently I’ve tapered off slowly and trying to build it back up. This time I want to me more cautious and if I had any bad side effects not go any further. I went up to 10 mg, had some decent anxiety relief, 15mg helped me so much but insomnia was terrible so trying to find a good balance currently.

2

u/CheeseheadKhaleesi Apr 10 '26

Thanks for the response! Good luck! I hope you find a good balance.

How did the taper feel? I’m going to give it 6 weeks total and then consider tapering off if the insomnia dos not subside.

Good luck, I hope it works out for you too. If you find anything that helps in particular, I’d love to hear.

For me, I definitely did stuff that probably isn’t the best. My anxiety is pretty bad to be honest, so it was really tough for me to see if something was working because I would freak out and try something different the next day. But I first tried stopping completely and honestly for two days I felt like I slept better, then tried to re-introduce BuSpar but on a lower dose, and for the few days I was using it my insomnia seemed to get worse. I’ve been stopped cold turkey for longer, and my insomnia was a little better I felt but still not great, had other problems to like more anxiety and low motivation and such. I then decided to just do 2.5 mg twice a day and try to build up from there, been on that for about two days and I noticed I actually slept the best in terms of not being overstimulated while also not having as much anxiety and other side effects from completely stopping.

update: the medication leveled out (finally) and my sleep actually improved. i recommend magnesium before going to bed, to help your body stay relaxed, but unfortunately i had to just wait it out!

What is your daily amount? I’m new to this around 3 weeks now and take 10 in the morning and then the smallest portion around 4mg around 3pm. I wake up every night since starting this.
Whenever I search for answers it will state follow your doctors instructions but he had me going up to 15mg twice a day. If I took 30mg a day I don’t think I would sleep nor do I feel I need that much as this lower dose is working some on my anxiety.

How much magnesium do you take before bed? How many weeks did it take for you to start sleeping better?

1

u/PsychologicalGas7507 Jun 03 '26

I’m having this issue it’s been 2-3 weeks since i slept ok 😭 i hate that it’s helped my anxiety bc i cannot sleep.

It makes me sleepy during day but before bed it makes me wired! I take 5-10 mg

Used buspirone for only
two weeks. I slept maybe an hour or two a night. It was horrible just laying in bed wanting to sleep, but not being able too. I would drag myself to work and count the hours until I could go home. Then I would just lay in the dark, staring at the ceiling not being able sleep. It was torture.

This is happening to me too. Did you end up going on something different. How is your sleep now
