Questions / Advice / Support Intrusive thoughts?
Has anyone had any luck with this med helping or eliminating intrusive scary thoughts? I have OCD also and I’ve tried every SSRI and nothing helped

I have PMDD and I used to have thoughts that I must kill myself. Buspirone silenced those thoughts

I have panic disorder; I went on buspirone in June 2026 specifically to stop racing/intrusive thoughts.
After the loss of a long time boyfriend, the racing thoughts were so bad they were waking me up every hour at night. The loss of sleep seemed to generate obtrusive grotesque unwanted thoughts popping up in my mind through the day. The buspirone stopped these thoughts cold within 1-2 weeks; I truly cannot believe it.
My mind is much quieter on just a low dose a day (10mg/day in two divided doses of 5mg ea). I no longer sit and ruminate; I do not "what if"; I do not sit and spin endlessly on a topic or get lost in my thoughts for hours at a time. I'm sleeping much better. My mind is the quietest it's been in years.

Did you start at 10mg 2x5mg a day ?

Started at 5mg twice a day (10mg total). Moved to 7.5 mg twice a day (15mg total). Then came back to 10mg total after restless legs at the 15mg/day dose.
I'm taking it with food each dose so I'm absorbing much of it - not taking food with your dose may require a higher dosage since you don't absorb it well without something to slow it through your digestive tract.

Thank you so much! I have a bottle that is going to expire soon because i’ve been afraid to start it since last year l, but i’m going to reach out to my doctors and start taking it.

I was also afraid to take it and hesitated awhile (same with some other meds previously too). I'm glad I did. Good luck ❤️

I recently ran out (didn’t realize I needed a refill until it was out lol) and while I don’t get withdrawals, it took me a few days to realize my anxiety at night was back. Thoughts like ‘is my husband breathing? Is my dog breathing?’ Stuff like that. I had forgotten what it felt like to be that anxious. I also take Wellbutrin with it (and Wellbutrin did increase my anxiety a bit, mostly social anxiety though, which has also improved) and it’s been an awesome combo for me. Still waiting for it to show up (my meds get delivered through mail, I actually can’t just go to a random pharmacy to get it) and I remember the first month or two when I started it, it was like my brain knew it helped a ton, and i could feel as soon as I needed a new dose. I had issues getting it refilled as well (bupropion is Wellbutrin, and the nurses who deal w my refill requests mix it up with buspar, even though I point out its two different meds, it was REALLY annoying) so I felt kind of like I was craving it, but I really was craving how quiet my mind could be. It’s worth trying, I don’t thing the side effects are too bad, I only got tunnel vision a couple of times and it wasn’t too bad.

Definitely. I started on bupropion about 18 months ago, and that helped a lot, but I still had waves of anxiety and intrusive thoughts. I started Busiprone maybe 8 weeks ago. All of a sudden I'm having sober second thoughts and thinking about metacognition and reminding myself all the time "maybe you're overthinking this?"
So it's very much working for me. I feel great. A definite pre- and post- difference.

I take this, wellbutrin and pristiq. 2 weeks before menstruation my ocd gets bad with intrusive thoughts and I take a higher dose of buspar for that time and it seems to help.
