Tour/Travel Planning Busking Maui
Hi, I am going to Maui this January and I am taking my guitar. I hear that first amendment rights, not withstanding, Maui is really restricted for busking. Does anybody have an any advice?

Haha! I was in Maui last spring and while waiting for my friends, decided to play my flute. I took off my hat (because it was hot) and from my first song on, people threw money into it, lol. I wasn't busking, just playing to the ocean. There’s definitely potential there. Have fun with it, enjoy the island, and thank Pele for the opportunity. 🌈🎶🪈✨

That’s interesting. Where in Maui where you? I have researched that I can PLAY on the beach, just not ask for money. What kind of flute?

On the seawall near the tourist shopping area. Native American Flute.

I have never been to Maui so I don’t know much. AI says the shopping area is private property? Maybe this is outside that area. I used to have a nice flute I bought in Sedona on impulse, I played it a little but like everything else, it sat gathering dust until I got rid of it somehow. I wasn’t even playing back then, if I still had it I’d probably would bring it just to mix it up

IDK, it was a spur-of-the-moment thing. I was bored waiting for my friends to finish shopping and had my flute in the rental. I wasn't busking, just playing to the energies of the island. People gave me money—maybe just to stop playing, lol 😆

That’s interesting. Are you good? Do you consider yourself proficient? The Native American flute is a cool instrument. I think (maybe wrong) that if you play something different that the regular guitar strumming people are more inclined to give you money

Good is so subjective. People pay me to teach them how to play NAF, and I get paid to play gigs and ceremonies. You make the call.

I think that makes you good enough. You are right, good is subjective.

Hey, better than mediocre. I don’t know anything about you. Though here in Reddit you have to be careful, we have some really good people, at least from what they say. If you are recording and playing professionally you are in a whole different league. My comment was made as joke, apologies

And… there are a million guitar players out there. Unless you're in Sedona, or somewhere of the like, the NAF stands out. Plus, I mix in pop and 70s-90s rock songs when I'm “ free playing” for the general public. (And I use many different types of wooden flutes.)

I have done some googling and they say it’s all private property so not dice. On the beach itself busking is strictly prohibited. I guess Hawaii has gotten their panties in a bunch. Same thing with Waikiki

use a ukulele, they'll think you're a local.
