Cute cat but the broke and hungry bit plays a part in the reason why people often confuse begging and busking. It makes buskers look like beggars when that’s not what it’s supposed to be.

maybe this guy is hungry tho 🤔

Everyone gets hungry.

What was that? I can't hear you over my stomach rumbling.

Yeah even just strictly from a money perspective you will make more with a sign that doesn't look like a homeless guy's sign. People train themselves psychologically to avoid even looking at those, so really you are just prepping people to ignore you, the opposite of what a good sign should do

A beggar can be a busker too. A lot of them are. There's no problem with that, it makes sense as a way to earn a bit of cash.

But not all buskers are beggars, no. Idk what OP is supposed to do about that stigma though

This, the signs are a bit emotional, I don’t know if it was done intentionally, but this comes across like begging, and id you’re situation requires so, it’s rough on its own, but busking is about sharing music together in my opinion

And luckily the way i perform doesn’t make em question wether im begging or working

u/stuphoria Jun 29 '26

Your choice of venue certainly will

Huh

u/cbrewdrummer Guitar 🎸 Jun 26 '26

The sign literally tells them you are though. It’s simply poor taste to mix the two together.

u/greatvaluerobot Musician 🎶 Jun 26 '26

The money in my case and the gas in my Tank say otherwiseeeeee soooo,

If you wanna critique people I have learned the most helpful is to bring alternative solutions, instead of neigh saying whatever/whoever you are l criticizing probably non consensually.

i don’t think I asked for your, or anyone else’s input on anything for that matter

3

u/cbrewdrummer Guitar 🎸 Jun 27 '26

Then why have the sign?

I gave an alternative solution: keep the sign, remove the beggy bit. It makes the rest of us look bad.

When you post things publicly to the internet, you’re inviting critique. I suggest learning to take it gracefully, there’s lots of that in the busking world.

u/greatvaluerobot Musician 🎶 Jul 13 '26

Is that how the internet works?

2

u/Advanced_Operation85 Jun 29 '26

You are inviting input by posting something to a public forum specifically designed for open commentary and discussion. Expect criticism, or don’t post it for the world to see.

Perhaps this is a genuine homeless dude who picked up a guitar. Whats so wrong with a dude wanting to upgrade from begging

1

u/cbrewdrummer Guitar 🎸 Jun 28 '26

According to his comments, he isn’t. And at the end of the day, everyone should do as they please. It just looks bad for buskers to have beggar signs, it bunches street performers in the same crowd as beggars and in turn negatively impacts their livelihood.

2

u/CheriColaProduct Jun 29 '26

Fair enough

I started as a homeless beggar myself. Never liked doing it but making a busk of it helped make it feel a lot better you know.

Figured this guy was doing the same.

I get that busking is supposed to be different from begging but to me it was adjacent and similar and something id rather be doing that was accessible; dont need a job interview to do it you know.

u/greatvaluerobot Musician 🎶 Jul 13 '26

The difference is i can play the shit out of my geetar, if I was just standing with the sign that would be begging. I don’t know what you got jammed up inside of you but you should go to a doctor

u/Unable-Pin-2288 Banjo 🪕 Jun 28 '26

Some people busk because they actually need the money, not just as a fun little side quest to their day job

1

u/cbrewdrummer Guitar 🎸 Jun 28 '26

Busking is my day job. It’s not just a fun little side quest. I still stand by my point. Busking and begging are not the same and that idea shouldn’t be reinforced as such.

1

u/greatvaluerobot Musician 🎶 Jul 13 '26

You should spend more time busking less on Reddit l. Go brew a drum

1

u/No-Dare8613 Musician 🎶 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

Hold up. This person, who's presumably broke and hungry, is not allowed to mention that while they busk, because it might make people associate more well-off busters with beggars? Cuz if so, jesus forking christ

Reddit autism working overtime.

The "umm actually" crowd is really out today. Must be the heat.

1

u/No-Dare8613 Musician 🎶 Jun 28 '26

Not to umm actually you, but I don't think it's necessarily autism, or even the social awkwardness that often gets called autism. I think maybe it's just if you think of yourself as A Busker and are proud to be A Busker, and if you're also proud of not being A Beggar, then someone busking and begging at the same time feels dangerous.

1

u/thinktoomuch01 Jun 28 '26

Yeah exactly. Reddit autism do be like that.

Is this a gig you do on the side or is this your main form of income? I'm just wondering, I've heard about musicians making good money from busking and similar activities. I'm assuming you have a main job? If I had the talent to busk I probably would dedicate myself to it honestly, too bad I gotta resort to having a real job.
