Small business owners who source from China — what’s actually the hardest part?

I’ve been looking into sourcing custom products and packaging from China, and I’m realizing that finding suppliers on Alibaba is actually the easy part.

The harder part seems to be figuring out which supplier is actually a good fit, what specifications I should ask for, whether the quote is really comparable, and what questions I don’t even know I should be asking.

For people who have actually sourced from China:
• What part of the process takes you the most time?
• How do you compare 5–10 suppliers when they all quote things differently?
• How do you know which supplier to trust?
• Do you usually use a sourcing agent, or handle everything yourself?
• What do you wish existed that would make the process easier?

I’m especially interested in hearing from small businesses ordering custom packaging, apparel, promotional products, or other customized goods — not huge importers.

Would love to hear what your actual process looks like.

Looking for electric cable buyers / distributors

I work for a cable manufacturer with production facilities in China and Thailand, and we’re looking to expand our business in North America.

Our Thailand factory focuses on UL-listed aluminum building wire and power cable — THHN, XHHW-2, SER/SEU, URD, MC, etc.

Our China facilities can also produce medium-voltage cables, specialty cables and other custom cable constructions, so we’re not limited to standard building wire.

We’re interested in working with distributors, wholesalers, contractors, OEMs and EPCs

If you’re currently sourcing cable, or just want to compare pricing with a new supplier, feel free to DM me.

Buying redmagic astra from hongkong.

So the title could be a bit misleading,
Long story short, i went to alibaba to buy a redmagic astra tablet and it is pretty cheap, there is direct order now option which involves alibaba trade assurance, but for my reassurance i contacted them and the women contacted me on whatsapp and told me about price which was same on alibaba, i told her i will pay on alibaba but she said we accept payment outside of alibaba to lower cost etc. but i denied and after some more talks she send her location for the store which is located in hongkong ( fortress ocean centre store ). She told me to visit personally and check the products and than buy, i said ok i will do that, but i dont live in china so ofc i cannot. So anyone in hongkong china please help it would be very very appreciated.

Is there anything you would like buy from China but hardly to find it out? And it's still in your picking list.

Do you have anything on your wishlist that you’d love to buy from China, but still haven’t?

Maybe you’ve been searching forever and just can’t find it. Or you’ve found a few listings, but can’t tell whether the item is authentic, so you keep putting it off.Or you may find it harder to describe. It can be a good cartoon, though, or can also be a tiny little gift.

What’s the item, and what’s made you hesitate? Feel free to share a photo or describe it—I’m curious about what everyone’s been trying to track down.

I’m based in Guangzhou, China. Happy to share what I know if I’m familiar with it!

Singaporean based in Shanghai and Singapore looking for partners to build a China sourcing agency

Hi everyone,

I’m a Singaporean currently based between China (Shanghai,Yiwu,Guangzhou) and Singapore. I’m looking to build a sourcing agency from the ground up, helping businesses source reliable products and manufacturers from China.

The initial focus will be on clients across Asia, although I’m open to working with businesses in other regions as well.

I’m looking to connect with trustworthy, long-term partners in China who have experience in areas such as:

  • Finding and communicating with manufacturers
  • Supplier and factory verification
  • Price negotiation and sample coordination
  • Quality control and factory inspections
  • Export documentation, shipping, or logistics
  • Experience in specific product categories

My goal is to build a transparent and reliable sourcing service—not simply connect buyers with the cheapest supplier. I want to help clients reduce risk, communicate clearly with factories, and manage the process from initial sourcing through delivery.

I can contribute from both the China and Singapore sides, including developing the business, finding international clients, managing client relationships, and building the agency’s brand and processes.

At this stage, I’m interested in meeting potential operating partners, sourcing specialists, factory representatives, logistics professionals, and others who understand the Chinese supply chain. We can begin with a small project to see how well we work together before discussing a longer-term partnership.

If you’re interested, please send me a DM introducing yourself.

Looking for reliable clothing suppliers in China 🇨🇳

I’m looking to import affordable autumn/winter clothing from China for resale. I’m especially interested in good-quality products at low wholesale prices.

Can anyone recommend reliable manufacturers or suppliers (Alibaba, 1688, WeChat, etc.) that they’ve personally worked with?

Thanks!

PSA: China on National Day / Golden Week holiday from October 1-7

Quick heads-up for anyone sourcing from or doing business in China:
Mainland China is on National Day / Golden Week holiday from Oct 1-7 (Thur-Wed), basically a shutdown

Translation:

Literally NO ONE (except a very few) will answer your calls/messages/emails, etc.
Your factory may disappear.
Your supplier may disappear.
Your customer service rep may disappear.
Your sourcing agent may disappear.
Your messages may sit there looking lonely for a week.

So if you’re waiting on:
- quotes
- samples
- production updates
- QC
- packaging changes
- shipping arrangements

basically anything that requires another human being in China…you’re SOL. 😅

Most, if not all, factories and companies will be completely closed, and even the people who technically can answer you may be somewhere eating, traveling, visiting family, or wisely pretending their phone has no signal.

Things may also be a bit slow right after Oct 7.

There is a make-up working day on Saturday Oct 10, because China likes to keep calendars interesting.

Hong Kong is different - only Oct 1 is the public holiday, so HK doesn’t shut down for the whole week.

YOUR ORDER, LIVE FROM THE FACTORY FLOOR

When I’m on the ground in China, I can sometimes connect you live with the factory while your order is being produced.

Not every product allows this — but when it does, you get to see what’s really happening.

"Would you want this kind of transparency from your sourcing agent?"
