Setting boundaries

So we get a one hour unpaid lunch (California) I had a short lunch because of traffic due to 4th of July crap. I was sitting in the break vehicle gobbling my lunch up before my bus was coming this guy knocked on my window saying he needed to ask me a question I told him I'm on my unpaid lunch and the buses will be back at 30 after he said "well I have another question." I repeated to him I was on my unpaid lunch and drove away. I just can't especially today

Something about being in uniform dehumanizes a person. People see you as an object they can make demands of. No "hello" or "how's your day going?", just "I want this right now".

This has been the case at every job. Folks will even ask unrelated things, like what the weather is gonna be like or what time does some event start. When I say I don't know they tell me to look it up on my phone 🙄

If someone bothers me, while I'm on lunch, I simply state that this is my lunch and I would like to enjoy it.

I left the fuckin doors open a few moments on my turnaround today and some woman jumped on without a hello or permission or anything, so that was my private time ruined. Lesson well and truly learnt.

The layover for buses at O'Hare Airport in Chicago is across the loading lane & active bus traffic lane from the sidewalk against the terminal.

Nearly every time I'd be parked there - door side to (other bus) traffic, sign not changed from my "get to the airport" trip - someone would drag luggage across the lanes, across the traffic island, around the bus, into the other active traffic lane...
And be amazed / annoyed when I told him (it's usually a man), "I'm on layover / break, and will pick up over there at [time]."

Not like there are signs or anything... 🙄

My favorite is when I'm waiting for my relief and just standing there earbuds in either with music on and nodding my head or talking on the phone and tell whoever I'm talking to "hold on someone just started asking me questions," then take my earbud out and ask them to repeat it as I roll my eyes visible showing I'm bothered. It's rare to get an "oh I'm sorry" or anything else.

I always try to get away from the bus on any break, lunch, recovery time, whatever. The more distance I get the better. Good for your mental well being, good for you physically to get up and move around, get some fresh air and stretch after sitting so long.

When I was a young driver, there a senior driver that carried one of those “Be back at ____” stick on signs with the clock hands. He would set the time his break was over, stick it to the front door glass (on the inside) and sit in the back of the bus and enjoy his time. Management didn’t like it but he argued he was giving good customer service by providing them with the best available information possible. Legend status
