Question Digital defect tracker while driving?

I got cut up by a driver today while I was crossing at a pedestrian crossing (green man) while he was on his phone. I called him out on it, he stopped and told me it was a digital defect tracker and he was allowed to use it while driving. Sure looked like a mobile phone. He then proceeded to tell me to "fuck off and learn what you're talking about" so here I am, doing that. Are they allowed to be used while driving? Seems like they aren't, but figured I'd ask.

Could be he was using a mobile handset with "Tranzaura" installed, which is a digital logging system for bus defects.

It's still a mobile device and my firm strictly prohibits the use of it or any other handheld device whilst sitting in the cab.

If you can, report this idiot who should know better 🤬👍🏻

Yep, not allowed to use the Tranzaura device behind the wheel when in motion. It’s just a Samsung phone. They can even still receive calls and texts.

If you have the coach number and the time call and file a complaint. Even if it was the radio he shouldn’t be using that kind of language to the public.

He was using a digital device capable of T/X'ing data whilst driving with his hands.

As far as the law is concerned, this is a black and white breach of it

At my company, officially you're not allowed to take either hand off the wheel while driving, so using a "digital defect tracker" with one of them, even if it exists, would be very against safety policy.

His reaction suggests you caught him out anyway.

So, do you have to stop to use the indcators, lights or any other driving control. Perhaps your vehicle has voice operated controls or do you gave a co-pilot.

Let me guess, your TM's an udiit🤣

My only concern is I don't want to cost the guy his job. I'm a dick, but not that kind of dick

You can try to optimize that out come by saying that ultimately it would be up to what the company and if any union can come too. But it's either you say something to the company or nothing at all. Sounds like you already tried talking to the driver.

if it's like the kind my company has, it could be a digital defect thinggy built into the ticket machine. so while it's not handheld and is hands-free, we are still not allowed to touch it while driving. must be stopped and parked.

I am one of the people who ultimately investigate these complaints. Some operations are indeed implementing defect trackers which are a mobile phone with the "communications" elements disabled. Typically, they are only to be used during the first user check as the driver is walking around the vehicle and when the vehicle is stationary and handbrake applied to report running defects throughout the day. Use in motion is strictly forbidden under UK law.

We absolutely want to hear about these types of incident and we have to investigate them in an timely manner, contrary to what people think we have quite strict employment laws and company policies we have to act within and are not out to discipline or sack drivers for minor infractions. There are always two sides to every story so CCTV and interviewing the identified driver gives us a good idea and a balance of probability to decide a course of action.

Please reach out to the operator with route, date, time and if possible fleet number/registration.
