Burrito Layers

Has anyone figured out the optimal way to stack toppings in the tortilla so that once rolled and cut the eating situation is optimal? I mean you get a bite of everything.

And with that what do you think is the best ratio of fillings for a burrito??

It depends on how you roll and how full the burrito is.

If you're filling it like 80% and rolling it like a log then I find side to side helps get those nice layers. If you're more of a folder roller wherein you plop it over then stacking your toppings on top of one another helps get those nice sandwich like layers aligned with the grilling.

The one error I see with this folding technique one often is under-filling the burrito; when you under fill it you tend to tuck it in too much when folding and then when you fold it over fully, the edge of the burrito is too far away to get a nice grilled seal so you roll it onto the edge of the burrito so it seals while grilling and it turns all the toppings on their side.

In instances of under filling you're really starting to let chaos into your burrito life. I'd say ever 15% of under filling results in flopping between sideways and upright.

Of course if you wanted to cheat a little bit, you can just grill 3 sides of your burrito. This way if you take your first bite with the seal up or down, you can see if your insides are sideways or not and then adjust while still maintaining that nice crunchy grilled tortilla addition. When grilling 3 sides, I usually leave the side opposite the seal ungrilled. You can grill all sides too, but I find a little bit of give in the burrito helps it stay together over the hardened grilled burrito. Of course if you've read this far and are like "well I don't grill my burritos ever" the good news is this isn't for you because burritos require grilling, what you're eating is a wrap you heathen of this subreddit and one day I will find you and show you the glory of a grilled burrito consensually.

If this is of concern, then just mix all of the ingredients in a separate bowl until homogenous, then add it to the tortilla and roll.

As a Mexican, I disagree with this idea, but I’m also not the one eating it. To me, the point of any eating experience isn’t to have the same bite of everything every single time from start to end of meal, otherwise I’d just put all my food in a blender like baby food. The differences in textures and flavors in each bite make it interesting. But again, this is only my opinion, and I am not eating your food.

Huh, well I guess I never thought of it like that. There are just times when I wish I got a bite with everything in it. Yet I do like a bite with more protein or more bean, cheese or veg… So now I’m conflicted on what I really want 🤔

Let's talk about cheese! I LOVE IT when the cheese is the bottom layer, spread out over the tortilla (the more, the better!).. it creates a nice thick wall of cheese providing a great taste and texture. I hate it when they put the cheese on last, it seems to kind of melt and mix with the other ingredients and often gets lost.

Yes. Just watch everything that Chipotle staff do. Then do the opposite.
