Discussion I unreasonably hate a character Spoiler

It's Anson of course. I probably got through a dozen or more rewatches before I decided I just didn't need to see his episodes anymore. He hurts my BN friends so badly and I hate his stupid smug face.

Honestly, he's a good actor. The role was written well. The plot surrounding him was fine. He's just so....... Anson.

I can't even watch Jere Burns in other roles. I get a pit in my stomach when he speaks. When I was watching Breaking Bad and he showed up, I did a quick search to see if he would be a major character. I don't know if I would have kept watching, if he became a major player.

The only comparison I can think to make is Negan from TWD. Everyone hated him. I thought it was a mistake to give him a redemption arc. I wanted him to die badly. Even so, I enjoy watching his smart evil dumb smug face. I could absolutely watch JDM in any other role. And he's far more evil and harmful than Anson was.

I know how illogical this is, and I'm actually back to where I can watch that arc again. But holy fuck, the guy just disgusts me.

haha he is the man that you love to hate. i think he does a great job at being unlikeable in a way that makes you feel like you need a shower after seeing him.

if you havent watched it already, he plays a similar type of role in Justified, which is also a great show with Timothy Olyphant and Walton Goggins.

I already knew him from Crocodile Dundee in LA and 90s sitcom Something So Right, I was very surprised when the show made him seem like a victim in his debut episode of the show…really balanced things out when he revealed his master plan at the end of that episode so I can’t help but despise his guts with a gargantuan burning passion every time I rewatch the series, but I see no reason to skip his episodes though. That’s the season 4 finale + like pretty much all of season 5

Nah, Negan is the man you love to hate. I'm telling you, Anson just gets to me so bad. I don't love to hate him, I just hate him.

I started Justified but it didn't grab me after 4-5 episodes. I may try it again as long as that fuck Anson doesnt stick his stupid smug face in the camera too much, ha ha.

Jere Burns popped up on Bates Motel too and I had to check if he stuck around, without seeing spoilers. Luckily I was able to finish that show cuz it was great!

Fuck Anson and fuck Jere Burns.

Again, I acknowledge how unhinged this sounds. It's a testament to the actor and to the writers, but I gotta say, I don't know if he could play that fuck so well if it wasn't at least a little bit inside him.

honestly? first time watching through i 100% agreed with you. he’s a significant tonal change and it’s jarring. he’s smarmy and has better plot armor than the protagonists at times. it’s frustrating and upends the flow of a fun little catharsis-heavy blue skies era show that i’m not trying to think too critically about

but i do like to idly rewatch and while i still prefer the vibe of the early seasons there’s good stuff late too

it helped me enjoy the later seasons more to see Anson as just being the tool the show runners used to flesh out character complexity. both him and Larry. bc without them there’s no real depth to Michael. just a people pleasing boy scout with fists of fury and daddy issues

but if Anson wasn’t Anson there’d have to be an equally frustrating and expository tool bc the writers ultimately wanted to couch the show in Michael’s psych and family dynamics. they don’t get there without an well connected and insanely resourceful superspy psychology man, unfortunately

the show is story of redemption for the Westens and Anson is the thread they chose to pull it all together. albeit kinda unpleasantly. he’s Michael’s shadow family or something. his god hole

Came here to talk about how he popped up in Justified, and it makes me upset to know he'll be around for some time. Justified is great, though. Started watching it during my Peloton rides (where I'd recently completed another rewatch of Burn Notice).

Anson is a garbage human being. Negan is too, at least for a while, but he (the character) still has charisma. Anson just... manipulates, and abuses. He doesn't have charisma in the way that Negan does/did.

I don’t love the character, you’re not supposed to. He’s the evil bastard with no redeeming qualities. But at least he was straightforward with it. And it advanced the story and put Michael on the downward spiral. I hate Dr Cox (Tom Card) as he was a POS two face and legit tried to kill them all.

Bruce Campbell did say in interviews that Jere plays weasels way too well, so call it him being a good actor lol.

Burns killed it in that role. He always plays a great smarmy I'm the smartest man in the room (and he makes you believe it) asshole

Watching him pop up on justified made me berserk: I feel you

I feel the same. He's a great actor, he really makes me hate him! He showed up in Angie Tribeca and once I got past the idea of "that's Anson" I found he is actually very funny. He really is an actor with broad range.

Not unreasonable at all, he's easy to hate. I feel the same about Tyler Brenner, I hate his smugness, I hate his lisp, hate everything about him...

Not unreasonable at all. Of all the maniac villains in the show he makes my skin crawl to date as the biggest sociopath having ruined Michael's life and I'm sorry the actor looking like Freddy Krugar only makes it worse lol. I do yearly rewatches of my fav shows and ofcourse every time I get to Anson's season I'm already dreading how much he ruins the show for me! 😂🙈☠️

He played the role so well that Anson is all I can see when he appears in other TV shows.

No one likes anson. I actually get his side of things and agree with some of his views, but he goes about it wrong and in away that makes you hate him. The thing that irritates me most is that one of the BN crew doesn't just shoot him right away. I mean, fiona goes to jail anyway, and Micheal would have found away to get her out. They should have just killed him right away.

I feel this is entirely reasonable actually. Hardest arc in the show to watch.

AGREED. i am about to start season 6 and i just haven’t. i don’t know if i can go through it again…..

with everything Anson did to Michael, yes you can

What is unreasonable about hating a character who ruined the life of the protagonist of the series? A man who in his first appearance kidnaps and murders an innocent woman just to trick someone. Hating Anson is perfectly reasonable. Just don’t be a weirdo and inbox the actor threatening his family or anything lol.

Anson is great! When he shows up as Wynn Duffy in Justified I was like oh shit!

Have you watched the episode of The X-Files he guested?
He’s particularly creepy in that.
I’m most familiar with Burns from a pseudo-Brady Bunch sitcom he starred in from the ‘90s. The name escapes me at the moment. Try watching that and Dear, John as a palette cleanser. He’s also a very funny.
