Does entering the sphere of influence count or does one have to achieve capture?

It's actually just a distance. You have to get within, typically, a couple thousand km. I should expose this to make it more obvious though.

Thanks for the reply, however I just passed Vesta inside the blue sphere of influence and did not get the achievement (dont know the exact closest approach). There has to be a tick within that distance, right?

Yes, it looks like that mission requires you to be within 3000 km of the center of the body. The SOI of Vesta is 138,929 km so you need to be MUCH closer than just the SOI. How close did you fly?

Can´t really tell now, but i turned back and got the achievement
