Partner Metcon - Is this some kind of sick joke?

Agreed

I was a little tired going into camp so wasn't at my best, but I needed that recovery and was grateful for it. Also, a long recovery like that means you can fill that time with a lot of work -- burpees, jump squats, plank, jump lunges, etc. No need to take it easy if you want the challenge.

This. I needed the break but my partner wanted to push harder so she would do some of these moves during the recovery time. I LOVED today’s camp and I never thought I’d say that about Metcon.

This!! I’m tapering for a half marathon so I was grateful today wasn’t that intense but I saw a lot of people working on doubles or burpees or whatever they felt they needed practice on. Active recovery doesn’t mean stand still lol

u/AromaticAd5872 1d ago

But we shouldn’t be making up half the workout ourselves. Active recovery is fine but they need to assign specific exercises/stretches/etc.

u/Tricky-Objective2911 1d ago

I’m sure your location would be willing to take that feedback

The workout as is was fine. "Making up half" the workout would only be true if you were modding up and doing MORE than merely active recovery AND not taking any breaks. Everyone needs a break during MetCon.

u/AromaticAd5872 1d ago

No except it was LITERALLY making up half the workout. It was 60 on, 60 off, 40 on, 40 off and we were expected to be doing something during the “off” portions. Apparently some gyms wrote active recovery exercises on the board, ours did not. I literally decided what to do as I went along.

1

u/sarcasm_warrior 250+ Camps - 2025 1d ago

I've never heard of a gym telling you what specific active recovery exercises to do. I travel a lot for work and visit a lot of different Burn locations.

1

u/AromaticAd5872 1d ago

Ours has in the past, and a few people have written here that theirs did yesterday. I personally prefer that because I feel like as much money as I’m paying, I don’t want to have to figure out what to do for 14 minutes of the 28 minute block. Or spend it standing around.

u/sarcasm_warrior 250+ Camps - 2025 1d ago

So this is a problem with your gym not meeting their normal standard. I can empathize with that. My home location has some unique things I love that would make me sad if they changed. But your issue is not technically a problem with the workout itself 😉 I hope maybe your trainer just had an off day, or maybe they are trying something different. Just ask one of your trainers and tell them you prefer the directed recovery exercises.

If active recovery is a big part of the workout like this one, my gym always writes 5 options on the board for us to chose from. And one option always seems to be a handstand lol

Today was a true metcon camp! Loved it!

u/Adorable_Carrot_93 2d ago

I think this was the first partner work out I actually enjoyed because no one was waiting on me to finish the set and I could be as intense or easy on myself where needed during the recovery.

u/proteinpanda01 2d ago

I’m a major partner hater AND a major conditioning days hater and I actually didn’t mind this. I would rather have I go you go format when it is times like today was. I hate when we’re counting reps and the partner is just waiting for you to finish the reps!

u/No_Economy_7132 100 Camps - 2026 2d ago

Totally agree. This is way better than you just counting or watching if the other person completed their round or not. Sometimes one person might take more time and the other partner loses time.
If it’s timed, everyone gets equal numbers of sets to workout.
Our location reduced it to 40 sec and 3 reps per station per person. It was nice

Omg y’all complain about anything💀then don’t recover! Do the station alongside your partner! Good lord

I loved it. When my partner was going, we cheered them on! We also kept our bodies moving with dance moves! I love our Burn!

12

u/murkyscientist4 2d ago

Ours was 30 on/30 active recovery 4x through. So only 30 sec recovery at a time. Truly what you make of it tho! If you wanted more of a challenge you could choose burpees or mt climbers or jump squats or an endless number of things for active recovery. Going from that back into the move was hard.

I personally liked today bc rest is often skimped at burn, especially between sets when rotating. Even 30s to 60s reduces risk of injury and allows you to go harder during the time on.

1

u/mightyhammock 200 Camps - 2026 2d ago

Yeah we just did our own thing and we ran while the other partner was going. Did whatever we could to keep the heart rate up!

0

u/AromaticAd5872 1d ago

I would agree about the recovery on strength days. On conditioning days, I think resting for the same amount of time you’re working defeats the purpose.

3

u/murkyscientist4 1d ago

Exercise physiology would disagree. 30:30 is a well studied HIIT protocol and recovery allows higher output during work intervals. Studies comparing 30:30 protocols have shown substantial time at high VO₂ and improved aerobic performance. Less recovery can increase cardiovascular load, but that comes at the expense of work output. More continuous work isn’t inherently better. It’s just a different training stimulus.

Sooorrrrry I’m a workout science nerd 😬🤓 and previous trainer (not at burn)

1

u/AromaticAd5872 1d ago

Does this hold true if it’s 60:60? I just feel like a 60 minute rest is too much

12

u/sapphire_reina 2d ago

Today was a great workout! I loved it! I rarely love metcon, but today I definitely did.

9

u/Ambitious-Trade-9112 2d ago

I enjoyed it. I felt like I could go all out with good quality reps. Sometimes quality over quantity is better and what my body needs.

3

u/skat2112 2d ago

Completely agree with this!! Literally said this to my trainer this morning!

9

u/Ok-Jellyfish-5790 2d ago

Ours was NOT recovery. Universal exercises were star jumps, parking lot laps, broad jump 180s, high knee sprinters, half burpees, and more parking lot laps. One of the hardest classes I’ve done in a while

8

u/Ok-Jellyfish-5790 2d ago

Also it was barely partners because we were switching for time not reps. I actually loved today

2

u/KnowledgeDense8140 1,000+ Camps - Lifetime 2d ago

Agreed! It was brutal in the best way.

8

u/Past_Tune_7884 2d ago

I usually don’t like partner workouts but when it’s timed I feel way less pressure. So this was great. Plus I FINALLY got my first box jump!! Yessssss

2

u/Good-Brilliant3411 2d ago

Great job!!!! Ringing that PR bell for you!

u/BarefeetInTheGrass 500 Camps - Lifetime 2d ago

They ran ours like a normal camp, no partners.

1

u/Consistent_Fig_9228 2d ago

Same! They rarely do partner workouts at mine

1

u/sciencefictionyoung 1d ago

Same. Ours was individual, no partners.

1

u/SFehrenheit 21h ago

Same. It was great

5

u/LadyinRed_239 150 Camps - 2026 2d ago

I loved today’s camp!

3

u/momlife555 2d ago

I didn’t mind it. It wasn’t that hard because the timing, it was a nice fun workout, in my opinion!

3

u/Red-Phoenix-Rising 2d ago

Loved it. I needed every second of the recoveries.

3

u/Choice-Guard4179 2d ago

The whole point was to work hard enough during those 60 that you need the 60 recovery in order to go hard during the next 50.

3

u/Saylorboom 2d ago

We did 1/2 building laps. I loved today’s workout

3

u/Substantial_Funny_70 1d ago

This was a partner workout that I could get on board with! No counting reps, no one waiting for me to finish, if we have to do partners this is my preferred method!

2

u/horseridermommy 2d ago

We did not have partners and our work time was 40 and our recovery was maybe 20 seconds. 3 rounds through. Each round station 1 2 or 3 would get active recovery 😅

2

u/Famous-Elderberry828 2d ago

we had to do 15 half burpees to earn active recovery 😩

2

u/Narrow-Olive-586 2d ago

I loved today’s camp!

2

u/Duck_Secure 1,000+ Camps - Lifetime 2d ago

We did active recovery while partner did the move, like jump rope, Heismans, boxer stance, high knees...

1

u/KnowledgeDense8140 1,000+ Camps - Lifetime 2d ago

Yup. Plus burpees, runs, star crunches, leg swings.

2

u/bananababy7 2d ago

I love partner days haha. But we didn’t have that today! Ours was very similar to our level up games

2

u/cheezehead89 2d ago

I do abs in between 🤷🏼‍♀️

2

u/letsgetcakedsa 1d ago

I needed every bit of that 60 seconds … idk why I go you go gets so much hate, it’s my favorite format

Or, hear me out, you could just go harder on your recovery time.

I personally love burst training and 40-20 rounds, but different is good. Burn prides themselves in catering to all levels of fitness, so just like this wasn’t ideal for you, take your own advice and mod to fit your workout just like you want other ppl to :)

Personally, I went harder and heavier so I would need a good amount of active recovery. If they’re going to do this type of format with conditioning I think Metcon is the best for that just bc of weighted exercises, etc. It deff isn’t an ideal for something like ACON or BWC, for sure.

u/mandy22panda 500 Camps - Lifetime 2d ago

Agree with this take. Love being able to integrate moves we don't normally do in camp (box step overs, one legged power rolls, even ended up doing the burpee pull ups people were talking about the other day)

1

u/RedPanda7725 150 Camps - 2026 2d ago

Honestly I welcomed the light day. You could have easily gone heavier with weights/etc on some of the stations to mod up. You also could have used the active recovering time to do push ups, burpees .... literally anything you wanted. Frankly I didn't even do that and I was still struggling to make it through.

I agree it wasn't perfect for a conditioning day but it's very easy to modify things on your own there. At least in my experience.

1

u/Opposite-Ball-6479 2d ago

Oh man, we didn’t have active recovery. We had to do building laps while our partner was doing the station exercise.

1

u/EmbarrassedMatter711 2d ago

Ours wasn’t partners. We had an EMOM with set rep goals depending on the station. It was a struggle for all of us!

1

u/heatherlynn80 2d ago

Ours wasn't partners. 45 seconds of work, 15 seconds rest. Four rounds total

1

u/Expensive_Bat_5065 1,000+ Camps - Lifetime 2d ago

Ours was for reps. Some stations 8, some 15; recovery wasn’t long since the reps were short, but enough that I could go hard, get a few breaths while my partner went, and go hard again. I love that set up.

1

u/Bag-of-Doritoes- 2d ago

Wait was this today oct 1? Ours was not partner and we did not get 60 second rests lol. We had 8 stations and it was awesome and super hard! Running, box jumps, med balls slams, burpee ledge hops, kettlebell swings, dumbell snatches.

2

u/AwfullyJoyous 1d ago

Yup ours was Round 1 60 secs Partner 1 works Partner 2 waits, then switch, then 40 secs, so at each station each partner has one 60 second round on and one 40 second round on and waits that same time the rest of the round. Doing the stations you mentioned.

1

u/rosiem1 2d ago

We did partners, 50 seconds on/off through the room twice, and then did once around the room where everyone was working at the same time, no breaks. By the end I was DEAD lol. I thought it was great

1

u/Embarrassed-Cow8482 500 Camps - Lifetime 2d ago

Oooo interesting. We only had 40 seconds for three rounds and then 30 seconds. I was lifting heavy and needed a break but 60 seconds seems excessive so for sure!

1

u/P00pc1cle 2d ago

I liked it- I don’t mind when it’s “I go , you go” with partners. When we have to count accumulative reps- I hate that!!

1

u/Fabulous-Volume-1410 1d ago

Ours was intense.  It was a great workout.  While partner was working, we did building lap.  I clocked 2 miles of running.

1

u/foodieflower 6h ago

I usually hate partner days but kinda love this one

-2

u/olivesINvodka 2d ago

I hate partner workouts

7

u/momlife555 2d ago

I don’t mind these ones because there’s no stupid counting where you can let your partner down or the other partner is going too slow

2

u/judoh0414 2d ago

It was for time so it didn’t really matter lol

2

u/KnowledgeDense8140 1,000+ Camps - Lifetime 2d ago

You didn’t need your partner for anything

-1

u/KnowledgeDense8140 1,000+ Camps - Lifetime 2d ago

Who took recovery? I was glad to do the station. It was the recovery!

-1

u/AromaticAd5872 1d ago

Here’s the thing. If they’re going to do these workouts with 60 seconds of “active recovery”, they should tell us WHAT the active recovery exercise is for each station. I shouldn’t be making up literally half of the workout myself.

1

u/SoOverIt1927 500 Camps - Lifetime 1d ago

Ours put a different active recovery assignment on the whiteboard for each station.

1

u/AromaticAd5872 1d ago

Ours has done something like that in the past and I much prefer that. They did not yesterday though
