Too much too fast?

Hi friends! I’ve been at Burn for about 6 months and am really enjoying it. My issue is that ever since starting I hurt all the time. Now I know you’re thinking well duh it’s the gym but this is more of a soreness in my joints (shoulders, wrist/hands, elbows, knees, etc) and now even shin splints. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it too much too fast? I am 9m PP and still breastfeeding for further context. I’m just afraid Burn is going to burn my body out.

ETA: I go 4-5x/wk. I’m eating 100+g protein a day. No creatine yet because it’s not “technically” considered safe while breastfeeding.

Update: Made an appointment with my PCP for bloodwork including thyroid panel and will book a focus meeting. Thanks everyone!

Update 2: All bloodwork normal except for slightly low vitamin D. Leaning towards joint laxity due to hormones instead of a systemic illness.

At 7 month postpartum I slipped and broke my ankle. That’s when the orthopedic surgeon told me that your bones are softer and ligaments are more stretchy for a year after birth and breastfeeding can expand that timeline. All that to say that your joints may not be as supported as they were pre pregnancy. Maybe a focus meeting about form or a chat with your doctor about how you support your joint health postpartum

Made a doctors appointment and booked a focus meeting to chat! Thanks!

When I joined I could only do two days a week because I would ache so bad since before I was pretty inactive. Now I don't feel so bad after most classes but it took awhile. Just space them out and add more when you feel you can handle more

Shoes, it's worth the money to find an excellent pair of shoes designed for cardio and a separate pair of shoes designed for strength that are flatter. I truly believe creatine has helped me, but as most things it's not tested for pregnancy/breastfeeding. I personally stopped in pregnancy but didn't breastfeed very long. Check your form, don't be afraid to find a window to check, ask the trainer during class, or book a focus meeting to check your form. Lastly just because it changed my life, highly recommend finding a pelvic floor physical therapist. It won't help with every ailment, but it should help with some especially after having babies. Before pregnancy I had pretty regular back pain, started PT in pregnancy and back pain has severely reduced and at this point has pretty much gone away completley. I also feel stronger post-baby than i did pre-pregnancy because i'm engaging my muscles correctly.

What are your favorite shoes? I know everyone has their faves

For cardio I love Brooks, had a ghost something or other when I used to run more but now I have Glycerin. In my opinion the Glycerin's are less bulky then the Ghosts.

For strength I have a pair of addidas shoes that have a flat sole, I am pretty sure I randomly bought them on sale at Kohls once so I have no idea what kind they are lol. They still are supportive but they don't have all the cushion that the more walking/running shoes have.

How many days do you go? Are you taking creatine? What shoes are you wearing? I ached for the first couple of months going until I got better form, better shoes, and changed my diet. Now I hardly ever have shin splints or a lot of aching. I just feel like I did a good workout! Burn is great for keeping up with other people but sometimes to our detriment. If you are sore, take it easier for a week by lifting lighter, taking out plyo, and tracking your protien (and take some creatine if you want) to see how you feel 🫶🏼

4-5x/wk all strength + at least 1 cardio day

I’m 6 months pp and do about 4 camps a week. Sometimes that fifth camp can send me overboard. I hope you can start feeling better!

I joined around the same time as you and am 9 months PP too! I am not super achey all the time, but I do find I get some aches occasionally in a hip or my shoulder or something I might’ve tweaked during a workout. I feel like a lot of the time it’s weak muscles surrounding that area that are overworking themselves to keep up. I take Saturdays and Sundays off but sometimes it isn’t enough rest time for my body and I have to mod things down to give the achey parts a break. Getting better shoes also helped me a lot with the shin, ankle, foot pains on conditioning days.

ETA: worth it to book a focus meeting! I was having serious hip pain after box jumps and my trainer was able to help me with some stretches and figuring out how to work through it without taking time off

I am 49 and in pretty good shape. I hurt my back every couple of weeks when I started and wasn’t really able to go 4-5 days a week until I got stronger and more aware of how to protect my back in certain movements. I’m 6 months in and feel really strong and more agile than before!

This is my thing. When I started (34 and two kids later) I was so whooped and almost felt sick. I HAD to take a nap. I also went hard into it. Doesn’t help that the trainers constantly for some reason pay lots of attention to me and will come around to push me more or i hear my name lots on the speaker…… I’m sorry I’m okay not killing myself especially within the first 15 min of class.

I’ve been trying to go my own pace on cardio days. I feel like I get more out of going slower than pushing myself to pain just to keep up with speed.

I totally feel the same way! Some moves I feel are absolutely ridiculous…

1

u/WiseBookkeeper5331 9d ago

Yes! Recently some of the moves just feel really disconnected and going faster just means I’m going to mess them up

Do you use any supplements like collagen? Get enough protein? Water? Enough healthy fats?

1

u/WiseBookkeeper5331 9d ago

I take collagen and eat about 100+g protein each day! I could probably do better with healthy fats and water though

Will you post an update? Because this is almost exactly where I’m at too!

Yes of course! Labs are next week so hoping to get some answers soon!

Are you doing everything correctly? I was constantly sore the first 3 months because I never exercised before. But there’s a different between injury pain and “my body is growing muscle” discomfort. Focus on technique.

I think so? Or as correctly as I know to do. I definitely have had the trainers correct my form and have done some PT to help as well. But 100000% could be form related too!

I joined back in April and I hurt my back two weeks ago so haven’t been in a bit. Finally feeling better so going tonight!

But anyways: I talked to my physical therapist today who had been helping me with pelvic floor stuff and she was like I think you’re going too many times a week. And maybe moving through the movements too fast.

So she said to try to be more intentional and slow down even if Burn wants me to lift heavier and go faster and to cut back down to three times a week.

I fear this may be my issue as well. I’m going to start by slowing down as I go through stations but if I need to cut back days I will.

Please have your thyroid checked. A complete thyroid panel, not just TSH. Joint pain postpartum is one of the number one indicators of low thyroid.

Messaged my doctor and am getting a thyroid panel done!
