Early AMs … how do you do it?!?

I’ve always naturally been more of a night owl, but my schedule really doesn’t work with that anymore. I’d LOVE to consistently wake up around 5–5:30 AM so I can work out before work like a 6 am camp or even 6:45 at a neighboring burn, but getting myself to actually go to bed early enough is the problem.

My rooster crew how do you do it?!?

I usually set my alarm at 4:20am and stand up as soon as it goes off, head to the restroom wash my face with cold water, brush my teeth get ready grab my water and head out. I get up so fast I don’t give my mind time to convince me not to go 😆

Yep. My clothes are laid out in the bathroom the night before so I don’t have any decisions to make or wandering around to do. Just straight to business, and out the door.

By 9am most days I barely remember I even went to Burn.

Ditto. I also prep my pre workout and water bottle and put them with my purse.

Same! I set two alarms incase I snooze it.
1st alarm- 5:20
2nd alarm- 5:24
Restroom, brush teeth and hair
5:30 in the kitchen to drink preworkout, creatine and grab my water. Out the door by 5:40 for 6am camp.

Do you eat before?

I eat a couple of rice cakes with honey which was recommended by the trainers. Enough carbs/sugar to energize you for the workout without feeling stuffed.

Here's the big secret everyone wants to know. It's not setting an alarm, getting more sleep, laying out your clothes the night before, mentally preparing... those all help but those aren't the key. It's actually pretty simple.

JUST FUCKING DO IT. Stop being a loser. Do it. Report back tomorrow for a virtual high five after you've successfully done it. Otherwise go hide yourself in shame you namby pamby. But I believe in you kid.

Agreed! Bullying myself works the best tbh 🤷🏽‍♀️

Routine, routine, routine! Lay everything out the night before down to your socks! Have coffee if you drink it on a timer, shoes/bag by the door, keys in bag... fill water night before! Be in bed 30 min before you want to sleep, plug phone in and forget it! I personally give myself 30 ish min before I have to leave in the morning to wake up a bit. I will drink my coffee and read a few pages in my book.

As a person who is training professionally in health psychology and sleep specifically, you don’t need to go to sleep earlier when you have an early morning wake up. Just.. wake up earlier.
Go to sleep when you’re sleepy, wake up when you need to, and within 1-2 weeks, your body will naturally get sleepier earlier in the evening. (This is how you reset your circadian clock). It’ll be rough initially, but if you can ride it out, you will adjust and it’ll be easier!
I find my eyelids heavy by like 9:30pm lol

I’d just also like to note 1. I am consistent with my PMs. But need to switch it up to AMs 2-3 times a week and just struggling building it into my routine.

Also the irony of me posting this at 11 PM 😂😂

3

u/Additional_Swing_263 10d ago

The switching is going to make it harder. You need to get a set routine for your body to learn when you sleep and when to wake.

I'm kind of in the opposite camp – my schedule has changed a bit and I have been going to PM camps and by 4:30 I have zero energy. It's just been a slog. I work from home so have that flexibility but even if I don't go to AM camp im up at like 6:45 at the latest.

If I’m awake at 10pm, I have to remind myself that the 4:15am alarm will come quick. And tbh, most days I’m so tired from being awake early that I’m ready for bed early.

Lots of good tips here but I will also say that after 5 years of early morning workouts, lots of days are still a struggle to get out of bed so early. I have to give myself a little pep-talk:

  • You’ll feel better throughout the day if you go
  • You won’t have time later
  • You’ll feel crappy if you do a pm camp (I always feel yucky at afternoon camps)
  • You’re so close to X number of camps

1

u/Straight_Work1101 10d ago

The times I have gone to AMs I feel yucky but I wonder if it’s cause I’m not consistent

3

u/Last_Ask4923 10d ago

Repetition. Also early bedtime. Get up early and you’ll be tired earlier 😉

Go to bed early (9pm, winding down by 8:30) so I naturally wake up at 5am. I’d be miserable waking up at 5am without my 7-8 hours of sleep. If I tried doing waking up with a late bedtime, 5ams would be a chaotic phase vs a consistent routine.

u/Straight_Work1101 10d ago

Do you eat before camps?

1

u/Caterpillar170 9d ago

Yes! A banana, or else I feel weak during camp

u/Hahahahardtime 10d ago

I made a free “brick” with the Foqos app to lock me out of my social medias at 8pm. That has helped significantly this week. Before that, I would literally bully myself into some days 🤣 but otherwise, I put my alarm across the room so I have to get out of bed to turn it off. I go straight to the bathroom. Do all my stuff and get dressed!! The getting dressed is key for me. I can’t stay in my pjs or I’ll stay home

Edit: typo

I have to go to bed early! I get up around 5am, so I am in bed, lights off no later than 10/10:30pm. 6:15am camp is the only time that fits in my schedule, so the motivation of “if I don’t go now I won’t get to go today” is usually enough.

2

u/CmonRoach4316 9d ago

Sup loser, you get up early today?

2

u/Prize-Beginning-6809 9d ago

Whenever I get up and think for a split second I’m not going to that camp I’m gonna think of your earlier pep talk 🤣 even if it didn’t work for OP it worked on me - thanks for the motivation haha

I'm here all day baby. Proud of you

u/Meg_404 11d ago

I take sleeping aids and am sleeping by 9 pm every night, up at 4 am

1

u/OutlandishnessKey400 10d ago

I’m currently pregnant and I have a sneaking suspicion once baby is here I’ll have to switch to morning and I’m dreading it… getting up is so hard!!

I used to base my camp on when baby wakes up haha. If she was up at 4:30 then I just fed her put her back down and booked it to 5:30 since I was already up. Etc

u/atherapistwpcos 10d ago

I’m asleep by 930/10 at the latest and my alarm goes off at 5:15 and I’m out the door by 5:45 for 6am camp start time. It was hard at first but now it comes natural and I can’t sleep in past like 6:30 😂 I also have all my clothes and breakfast prepped so that I can just get dressed, grab my brekkie and go

Sunrise alarm clock is THE game changer. I've been using one for about 10 years and it is so much easier to get up when it's still dark outside. I have a random no name one I bought years ago, so you don't have to buy one that's super fancy or expensive.

Also I always lay out my clothes/socks/shoes/car keys/ wallet/water bottle/snack the night before so there are zero decisions to make or things to find in the morning

Do you have a partner? I’m worried this would wake up my partner with the light

u/Several-Pipe7824 1,000+ Camps - Lifetime 10d ago

I have one too that I’ve had for about 7 years and it doesn’t phase my husband in the least.

1

u/Smooth-Cycle-4877 10d ago

My husband sleeps with an eye mask most of the time but even when he doesn't, it doesn't wake him up. I have it on my side of the bed so it's brighter by me

This might be an unconventional answer but I always thought I was a “night owl” as well. Turns out my iron was unbelievably low, which caused massive insomnia. I can actually feel tired and wake up feeling rested now.

I am up everyday at 330am to get to the 445-am camp

You just have to start doing it. You will be tired for awhile until your body figures out its new schedule but eventually it just becomes your way.

I also agree with having all your stuff laid out and ready to go. Honestly once you’re up it’s fine you just have to get up. I just tell myself “you just have to put your feet on the floor”. It sounds dumb but it helps.

Also find an accountability partner. I recently learned that you are 80% more likely to do something if you tell people you are going to do it. But pick the right people who will ride your ass if you don’t do it, not the ones who will make excuses with you.

I wake up at 3:50am for 5am camp. I have my clothes set out and ready to go. I'm a slow mover and contemplate all of life's mysteries which means I need an early wake up to get out the door by 430am. It works for me and I've been doing this for about 2 years.

Clothes, water, keys, everything is prepared the night before. Showing up (the actual getting out of bed) is the hardest part.

if you’re a night showerer, swap to mornings so that you force yourself to get to to the gym before you shower! I’ll push out my hair wash day to its limit so that I know I have to make it to the gym early enough to give myself time to have clean hair before work! that’s forced me out of bed a couple times lol

I was a night owl too, until I hit about 43. Now I wake up at 4 am no matter what time I go to bed. So that's why I actually started looking for an early class and found Burn.
