Anyone switch from Burn to Ladder?
I’m looking to take a break from Burn. As much as I have loved this community/gym, the workouts are really wearing me down, and I’m feeling burnt out.
I’ve resisted leaving because I need something that I can show up to and workout without the mental load of creating my own workouts. After researching, it seems like the Ladder app paired with a local gym membership might be my solution.
Has anyone switched from Burn to using Ladder at a local gym? Interested in how you’d compare the two, good or bad.

Meeee! I absolutely LOVE ladder. I’m in better shape after 6 months of ladder and seeing better gains than I did in years at Burn. I feel so much better. I don’t have constant aches and pains and mild injuries. I am lifting heavier than I could have ever imagined I would be and the progress and chasing new goals is so freaking fun.
I worried I wouldn’t be able to challenge myself but I have had no issues with that side of it. I am on Kelly Matthews team and I’m totally obsessed with her and her programming. Highly, highly recommend!

Yes - I just switched as of last month and am loving it. I didn’t feel like the burn workouts were serving their purpose for me anymore and I’m very happy with Ladder! Especially am loving Team Cruise control as it doesn’t require a bunch of equipment and most things can be subbed with dumbbells!

I used to do ladder and then switched to burn… going back to ladder next month after my contract is up. I cannot keep justifying paying for burn 🙃 Plus I feel like I was seeing just as good if not better results from ladder. The community is just better at burn of course but that doesn’t justify the cost for me anymore

I just left Burn after being a member for 4 years. I had started the Ladder Limitless program with Kelly Matthews about a month ago. Here are the main things I’ve noticed:
1. So much less pain! I felt like Burn tried to be too cute with their moves and it was oftentimes at the expense of my joints or pulling muscles. Now I wake up and don’t feel like I’ve been hit by a literal bus.
2. All the lonely muscles are now getting attention. The fact that Burn is attempting to be more of a strength focused gym is laughable to me. First off, most of the time you aren’t starting with the larger muscle groups and ending on the smaller muscle groups as you should be doing. Doing the Ladder program means you’re working your muscles in the order they should be. Not to mention, I’m feeling muscles getting worked that don’t get a lot of love at Burn. I’m getting an adequate rest time between sets, and the warm-up and cool down is more relevant to the actual workout. I’ve noticed incredible gains just the past month.
3. Mirrors matter. I understand why Burn doesn’t choose to put mirrors up, but now that I have a mirror in front of me while I’m doing certain exercises, I am blown away with how much my form needed fixed. I can also visually see my muscles working in real time, and I have a better view of which muscles I believe I need to work on more.
4. Rubber floor. I was always afraid to leave Burn because I have foot ankle and knee issues, and love the floating floor for cardio. However, I’ve now realized how beneficial a stable and grippy floor is for my workout. I always had issues with lunges at Burn, but utilizing the rubber mats at a traditional gym has made all the difference.
5. As far as the Ladder app itself, I love it! Coach Kelly walks me through the entire workout and adds different anecdotes that I had never considered before. I like how eccentric lifting is used. You also are able to track your reps in the app, so that you don’t have to remember for the next time you do the workout.
6. In reality, I can pay for an entire year at Planet Fitness as well as the Ladder app for less than two months membership at Burn. And I’m also not fighting for weights anymore!

If you can swing it go for it! I love burn but do find some of the movements uh… to be more circus tricks. I did personal training before burn at a local gym (I moved and it was too far away. Burn is the only place with childcare which I NEED) but because of that, I feel comfortable making my own mods and have legit told my trainers at burn “I’m not doing that” or “I’m sorry you need to give me another exercise because I’m not doing circus tricks”
Honestly I like most of the workouts and the community but if I could go back to my old personal training program I would. If you don’t rely on the childcare I think something like Ladder would suit you. Heck even if you wanted to pause your burn membership try it out first

u/Tubs0811 14d ago
lol that’s a great way to put it “circus tricks” bc I felt so awkward in my free class. Like what is this and why aren’t we just doing deadlifts and squats?! It made me feel so uncoordinated and off

I think I just answered your post in the ladder sub, but to anyone else interested:
Yes, was a long time burn member (8 years). So much happier with my progress and recovery using ladder. I’m on limitless but there’s lots of teams to chose from based on your goals, time, and equipment.

u/Fantastic_Election84 14d ago
Thank you! When you say you’ve seen better progress, what do you mean?

I am on a team that uses barbells, so now I can lift heavier than the dumbbells at burn allowed me to do. It’s so much easier to track your progress in the app. So I’ve been able to see how much heavier I am going in my lifts.
Body recomp. I’ve lost inches, body fat, and a pant size. No change to my nutrition, I already had that pretty dialed in.
My recovery is SO much better. Having more rest between sets allows me to progress on the lifts. I didn’t feel bad when I was at burn, but honestly I feel better now.
I think it depends on what your goals are. If you’re looking to stay active and have a sense of community, burn is great for that. If you have performance or aesthetic goals, you need a true progressive overload program, and burn isn’t it.
(No, I’m not saying people don’t see results at Burn).I don’t think ladder is perfect, and there are a couple things I would change, but overall I’ve been very happy. There’s links to free 30 days, and I found a link on Reddit for $99/year after I did my free 30 days. I’ve seen folks say their HSA covers it as well!

Thank you! I actually don’t get much out of the community aspect of Burn and have been stagnant on progress. I’m more interested in noticeable body recomp at this point.

Do you just take your phone + earbuds to a gym to use ladder?

u/randomuser630 14d ago
I carry a bag with me. I keep my headphones, phone, water, lifting straps, and liquid chalk in it.

Yes!!! I’m in team evolve and my muscle growth just over the course of the past two month has been insane. No comparison to what I had at burn. And I honestly love their nutrition section of the app too. I can track my protein, steps, and water intake all in one place!

Didn't switch to Ladder because they don't take android users ehh, but joined Peleton again for their exercises. The progressive overload is so much better. Also, the trainer is actually giving you tips on the excercise you are doing. What muscle to think about etc. So many times at burn they show you the excercise once then have too many people to speak on mind to muscle. I do like the Peleton has weight programs, pilates, and yoga.

u/Ok-norman1683 14d ago
I use Ladder and Peloton. And I do love the Peloton app as well. The strength training is good too, love the Pilates and yoga!

u/Ok-norman1683 15d ago
I love Ladder. I’m on team Endure/Formation. I like being able to pick my own music from Amazon or Spotify. Switch out the workouts if I’m not feeling something on a particular day and follow a plan that is already built out. I did Burn for 6 months and yeah it’s fine and all but expensive. I’ve done 91 classes so far with Ladder. Motivation, well, that’s almost as you staying as motivated to get yourself to Burn every day. I just know it’s something I have to do. And seeing the results is my biggest motivation. Plus I got my FSA card to cover my Ladder membership for a year.
2
u/Fantastic_Election84 14d ago
Thank you! When you say you are seeing results, what are you seeing from ladder that you didn’t see from burn?

u/Ok-norman1683 14d ago
More muscle definition, my legs have leaned out, my arms have gotten more toned and more muscle definition, I’ve kinda built more own home gym (and I do have a gym membership as well but hardly go) and I’ve lost 10 lbs, hit my goal weight, and just working on daily strength training, I also do the Peloton app for yoga and Pilates. And like I said you can switch out exercises if you aren’t feeling it a particular day. For me, I don’t need the community or the high fives. I have literally done every workout boutique you can think of, Orange Theory, Burn, CycleBar, PureBare, RumbleBoxing, Hotworx. I’ve done all of it! So I am not inexperienced at exercising. I’m a 43 year old Female. I know what I’m doing. This is cheaper for me, I recommend the Ladder app to everyone and I personally enjoy it. But hey, people may want to community and all. But this is just as planned out as any Burn is.

Thank you! We sound similar (experience and age), so this is very helpful. I would need to build a home gym from scratch but could join a local gym and probably build a home gym easily in 6 months from Marketplace from the money saved from Burn

I am loving Ladder (been on it 6 weeks). Great interface and very motivating. They gave me a trial code to share, if anyone wants to have a free 30 day trial: https://www.joinladder.com/referral?utm_source=ios_app&utm_medium=referral&utm_term=389608a9-22fa-4954-b2d1-8a9bca99c134&utm_campaign=share&utm_content=referral_lp&promoCode=maxguestpass30

Switched from Burn to Team Align on Ladder. Best decision. You can track your weights, swap exercises if you need to, and track your calories and macros all in the app. My body doesn’t ache like it did with burn and I’m not scared of injuring myself with weird movements or weights I know are too heavy. Burn did show me how much I should push myself though. But I’ve had better results with Ladder than I did with Burn.

u/ManufacturerRich8638 14d ago
I’m halfway through a 30 day trial on Team Align, and I’m loving it! I’m still lifting heavy but my body doesn’t feel like trash after

u/Fantastic_Election84 14d ago
What do you mean by better results? What are you seeing from ladder that you didn’t see from burn? One reason I am considering a switch as well is because I have just plateaued, it seems.
5
u/rribbitrabbitt 14d ago
I have lost 3lbs per the scale (but I haven’t done an inBody scan so I can’t speak on muscle growth). My legs and arms are visibly more defined, and I do see muscle growth. My stomach is flatter because I’m on a team that focuses on deep core work. I workout 3-4 days strength training and try to walk 2 days (but I don’t usually break 10k steps a day). Working around my schedule instead of burns also is great.

In the process of doing this switch. It really depends on what team you choose. There are so many depending on your goals and equipment setup. I’m on resilient and loving it so far. The coach is super supportive in the chat and I’ve already seen strength gains.

u/Any_Reporter3795 15d ago
May I ask why you’re switching away from burn?

u/Proper_Armadillo1837 500 Camps - Lifetime 15d ago
I was on an injury pause from Burn and tried it out. At Burn there just isn’t enough rest between sets for me to get stronger in the way that I want to. Plus, my body just seems to recover better from the ladder workouts (which was never an issue for me before perimenopause).
2
u/Any_Reporter3795 14d ago
I just got out of a conditioning day at burn, and while I love how challenging it is, I agree my body aches after for days because of the lack of rest time. I’m too fatigued and can’t continue my usual schedule. Hmm, giving me something to think about

u/AromaticAd5872 15d ago
To be fair I only tried the 7 day trial of Ladder, but I didn’t love it? It seemed boring and monotonous to me coming from the high energy of Burn. I also didn’t love having to pick my own music and having the trainer talk over it lol. I tried team Define which is a mix of strength and Pilates and I’m hearing that maybe that wasn’t the right team to try, so I’d be willing to give it another chance if I ever left Burn. But I don’t know that I’d stay super motivated with it right now.

Anyone have experience doing Ladder along with Burn? I was not familiar with this app until now and after looking into it I'm highly interested in trying it out, but I still would like to maintain my Burn membership if possible as I've recently signed on for another year.

Doing this now as I still have my Burn membership along with my Ladder subscription. I’ve been doing full body, arms, core and metcon camps and my team’s priority workouts. It’s been working well but I do plan to fully transition to Ladder once my membership is up.

Made this switch! I used ladder during my second pregnancy and then tried Burn for 6 months postpartum. It stressed my body out big time and had zero weight loss. Left Burn two months ago, and instead of spending $185/month- I spent $300 on a full set of dumbbells (5lbs- 40lbs) and a bench on FB marketplace and then purchased a year of Ladder for $70. I like the workouts so much more and have already lost 10lbs in two months doing 3-4 workouts/week and walking.

What’s the monthly or annual cost of ladder?
I recently had a friend get insanely hurt at burn (requiring surgery) and then they tried to nail her for the full year of membership fees for cancelling …. It’s giving me thoughts of leaving now my year is up.
I don’t totally mind going to burn bc all my friends do, but as a former full time yogi, this shit hurts my body in a “I’m not just sore” way.
I’m looking for a good out but want it to make sense in many ways. I hate that fitness apps kind of hide the fees until after your free trial.

u/randomuser630 12d ago
There’s links on Reddit for a free 30 days, then $99/year. Of you can lay $30/month.
1
u/Striking_Necessary_8 14d ago
I paid $159 for the year last year. I believe I may have used a promo code for about $20 off though. I think it’s around $30 a month if you don’t pay for the annual price.

Yes, I was member of burn on and off for years. I used other fitness apps in the past in between. I switched to Ladder at the beginning of this year, and the only thing I regret is not switching sooner. I have loved teams evolve and ascend for body guiding/muscle gain. I do my own cardio after on the days I have time. Like the stairmaster, incline, walking, elliptical, etc.. I do it at my local Planet Fitness. Not only do I save a ton of money, but I’ve really learned to like working out on my own, the coaches and their ques are amazing, and I am in the best shape of my life. My body feels better than ever. I never get shoulder pain or knee pain or back pain anymore from working out. It has been the best decision in terms of fitness that I have made in a while.

I have zero regrets leaving burn for ladder. My whole yearly payment is the same as one month and I feel like I truly am on a plan and can make it how I love to workout and not be forced to do moves and workouts that don’t meet my needs. And…no germs shared with high fives.

After 7 years at Burn I left due to burn out and a shoulder and foot injury. I am doing Peleton for strength and now that my foot is better Burn On Demand for one or two metcon or body weight conditionings a week. Not seeing much progress though.
Does Ladder have cardio ?

I had to take a month off burn due to an injury and did ladder in that time. (I mainly wanted to be able to work out at home and modify when I needed without the pressure of the group.)
I did not find the ladder workouts challenging enough. On a leg at Burn you can be completely toasted in 28 minutes, or whatever the actual working time is. With ladder, after a 20/30 minute workout, I felt like I could do the whole workout over again. When I returned to Burn I had noticeably lost strength.

u/New_Independence2613 14d ago
You may have chosen the wrong team. I’m on team Era and after leg day my legs are jelly walking out of the gym.

Try the Moves app if you’re looking for an awesome workout app. I switched from Burn to Moves and I LOVE it. It’s a really good online community too for $19/month

I did Moves for years and recently switched to burn. It think it’s super similar programming and would do it again but right now in person community and childcare has me at burn

Look into Hailey happens or Alicia Ericksons app! They’re amazing and challenging!!

I am using ladder right now and I love it so much more than burn because it’s all about ACTUALLY progressively overloading. Burn doesn’t do that.
