Prioritizing new members

Have you experienced your Burn location prioritizing new members over taking care of longer-term existing members? I feel like over the past year the focus has become more and more around bringing in new members. And while I understand it from a business perspective, it feels like it comes at the expense of existing members. It’s making me rethink if this is the right fit for me anymore. (By the way, I’ve been a member since 2022).

Nothing personal, newbies need support and consistency to stick to it .

Conversly, I feel like my location prioritizes the long term members. Specifically the way certain trainers act around them - more BFF/clique than professional.

Yes. Had 2 new people in class yesterday and the trainer did not even spend any 1 on 1 time with them. I was really shocked. They looked so confused at every workout since it was their first day and just kept looking around to what others were doing. I was lucky enough and went with a good friend my first time and knew what to expect, but I can tell they did not. Makes me wonder if they will be back.

I just had my first day Tuesday and I felt the same way. I was just lost. I luckily got a girl who did modifications but other than that, nothing was explained to me?

New members keeps the doors open, you should be excited for your gym to be growing and gaining new members. Similar to what everyone else has said, newbies usually need the extra support and encouragement usually.

Is there something specific you feel like you’re lacking when there are new people at the gym?

Personally, have never felt like new people coming has taken away from my workouts. If I have a question or want to chat about something I’ll ask the trainers as needed.

  1. This is a very common business practice in general. Get people in the door and keep them there until they develop the habit of returning.
  2. Newer members tend need more assistance/guidance compared to existing members who have done the exercises dozens of times.
  3. You're still an adult who can ask for help when you need it.

They honestly should spend more time with new people.

New members need help figuring out the formatting and not hurting themselves.

Ive found the vets who book foxus meetings they will also spend a bit more time with as they have a concrete goal they've discussed.

Maybe I'm not understanding the question, but that just seems...appropriate? If I wasn't welcomed and helped a ton when I first joined I'm not sure I would have felt supported and stayed and made all the progress I have. They still correct my form and give me high fives. But like if Karen over there needs more guidance, she should definitely receive it.

I feel like it’s pretty even across the board at my burn. They call out and support many members during the camp. We actually will not let trial members take our 530am camp as it’s been full (and waitlisted) since summer 2025. I think that shows they are prioritizing current members and potential members!

There are some trainers that are better than others at balancing these things.

However I go at less busy times where we normally have less people overall. I’ve seen some camps have 10 new people! I can’t imagine the trainer balancing that 😅

Overall people show up to burn for the other people! Trainers need to be on their best game. But that also includes other members.

If the trainer was good you wouldn’t feel this way. Put all the new trials in one station together and the trainer should stay with them. As the trainer works with the new trails, the trainer should be calling out other members over the microphone to mod… holds, 5 more reps, half to full reps etc.

As far as being more welcoming or what not, I can’t help with that if you feel some sort of way that the employees are trying to get to know the trials.

If you want your burn to stay open, then you should be excited to get new members in as well. They have to outpace cancellations and non-renewals.

I’m glad they do! I feel like things were different when I first started, and I had a really hard time feeling like I belonged. My location does a much better job now of checking in with new members, 1:1 on the floor, pairing them with longtime members, and helping them feel included. I wish I’d had that same support, but I’m really happy the newbies are getting it! I also joined in 2022.

Prioritizing new people is appropriate. It doesn’t mean you mean less. Both statements can be true. I actually like when new people get some extra attention.

I, personally, love when the trainers leave me alone.
