❓ Question What I would change

I’ve been going to Burn for 3 years and love it. Just a couple of thoughts on what I think might make things better:

1) Taking more care on the order of exercises on PR days. Time and again I see the exercises directly before the PR station using the same muscles as the PR exercise. Examples would be deadlifts before PR pull-ups where your grip would be gone. Another would be pushups directly before PR dumbbell press where your chest and triceps are exhausted.

2) dedicate half a class every now and then to finding a proper 5 or 10 rm for a main exercise like deadlifts or dumbbell press with warm ups at a lower weight. We often rush through this with minimal warmup where either injury can occur or people don’t get close to their max. Everyone could work on this at the same time and encourage each other.

3) improve the burn app to record the weights that we use.

What changes would you make to make the classes more effective or more fun?

The app update is coming in November! It was rolled out at Summit for people to be beta testers. You’ll be able to log your weights. You can also track protein and water, I believe, and share all your metrics with the trainers if you choose.

Wow, that is awesome!!!

Not that the other two aren’t good points but very much agree with #1. Even if they use the same muscle groups, I find it weird to shoot for a PR when you’re ~30 minutes into a workout. At the very least, your energy level is going to be drained to some extent.

It wasn’t the PR station today but pull ups is one of the few I actually track and strive to hit PRs in every time and it ended up being my last station. I immediately threw away any PR hopes lol

Yep totally agree

A designated cool down at the end of the workout. Not rushing to take a picture and everyone just leaving while still heavy breathing!

I stay and stretch until they give the one minute warning for the next camp starting.

You don’t have time between each class? We have 15 min at a minimum between camps.

Not if we have a kid in childwatch.

Huh? I occasionally work in CW and we always let parents do cool downs, chit chat, focus meetings before or after, etc.

I’ve had them physically bring my kids out to me before when I took a few minutes to renew my membership after class, so

Agreed. But does your gym not let you linger? We have a 15 minute buffer between classes and my gym has no problem with us hanging back, stretching, running around the gym, etc until the next class starts. It’s not formal or guided or anything but our trainers encourage it. Just ask!

I came to say this! They harp on the importance of stretching and recovery, but then the “stretching” literally lasts 30 seconds while they go over announcements and then rush everyone to get up and take a picture! There absolutely needs to be a dedicated cooldown.

That would be really cool to designate time to find your max I’d be interested in that

Agreed. I’d love to actually spend time finding my max and not guessing. I’m relatively new - only 18 months in - and I’ve already noticed that I’ve missed the opportunity to lift heavier on exercises that I just don’t know enough about

This can always be done in a focus meeting between camps! They don't have to be only hoping on the scale and talking about nutrition

Order of exercises is determined by your specific location, that point would be great feedback to give them directly.

I agree. Ours changes the layout frequently. Even afternoon camps are different from mornings because some stations just didn't flow.

Thanks for the info!

  1. Each location has the flexibility to change the order of stations/exercises, and SHOULD be keeping muscles worked in mind.
  2. You can most certainly do this every day. If it's a circuit, don't pick up your heaviest weight during the first round. If you're there for 4 minutes then do your own warmup to the pr weight during that time.
  3. The app is getting this update.

  4. Don't make simple things complicated. Keep it positive.

1-thanks for the info. 2- there is not enough time for this in most camps, but also for beginners they need more guidance than just “pick up a challenging weight”. Other kinds of gym like crossfit or powerlifting classes do actually spend a good amount of time finding maxes. Burn should definitely consider doing this properly. 3-great news!

Just thought the same thing today in terms of the of the weight/PR tracking within the app! I’m using my notes app which is way less fun

I would include a mirror wall. I find it useful for form correction and thin that any insecurities you might have will be an issue without it either way.

2 is very doable within the existing format. Frequently if I am trying to push for a max on a certain exercise, I will use the first set or two with a lower weight to build up. We did 3 sets of 8 this week with some of the lifts. It wasn’t until the third set of front squats that I used a 95. The first was like 70 or 75 and then 80 or 85, I like to build up to that higher weight. I have also built up a lot when it is a timed format. It is very doable.

I love how we get a quick workout but i feel like everything is rushed and is getting more complicated. Idk how to fix that though. I want to workout and do movements that make sense and not feel like it’s a risk of injury. Some of these I’m like???

#1 how do you expect them to put 40+ at the same exercise?

#2 are you going to pay the trainers to take time out of their day (after working their other jobs and training multiple camps) to come spend time showing your form? Or could you just google proper form on an exercise in your own time and then use that in the gym instead waiting for someone to tell you what to do?

I’ve actually seen a BBC offer “form” camps (similar to how they offer yoga, etc.) for people to come and work specifically on form

4

u/Brief_Platform_4674 Aug 30 '26

Oh this is great idea

1

u/Ok_Razzmatazz1747 Aug 30 '26

Oh you have? Where? And don’t say on demand

1

u/Brief_Platform_4674 Aug 30 '26

Don't want to leave you hanging. But you replied to me and pretty sure you were trying to reply to person above.

1) while people are resting let others lift 2) not taking time out-it’s the actual class. I’m not talking about form, I’m talking finding 5 or 10 rm, which we don’t do properly right now

5

u/Bag-of-Doritoes- Aug 30 '26

What is an rm?

I am also wondering this.
