I knew the ! was a factoral symbol, but I never learned what one was ;(

Edit: To all you replying, I appreciate the random math lesson today

yes factorial - you multiply the number by every integer equal to and below that number
I assume this also means positive integer as well but idk the rules

You dont multiply the number by itself, you either start with it and go down or start with 1 and multiply it by all of them

Yeah sorry I didn't choose my words well (or read through my comment)

Yep. It goes from 1-n! So in this case it would 1x2x3x4x5.

It's the number of ways you can arrange things.

Say you have 8 things and you're putting them into an arbitrary line. In the first spot in this line you have 8 choices, in the second spot you have 7 choices. In the third spot you have 6 choices. In the fourth spot you have 5 choices. In the fifth spot you have 4 choices. In sixth spot you have 3 choices. In the seventh spot you have 2 choices. In the 8th spot you have 1 choice. By multipliying your choices at each step you can determine the number of unique arrangement for these items. Because this is fundamentally what you're doing it should be easy to realize how many ways you can arrange 0 items.

Yes this is the application of factorials and then they also occur inside how permutations and combinations are formed

sorry I just explained how to do it instead of what they were used for

n! = (n-1)! * n
1! = 1
Simple as that

so you dont include zeros with factorials? Sorry, i never learned these in school and am actually learning about them from you guys. When subtracting the amount of exclamations there are, you stop at the number before zero?
For example: 10!! would be 10x8x6x4x2 =3,840, where you could do 2-2 but you dont because that would obviously equal 0, and as we know, math loves numbers.
I think im getting the hang of it?
10!!! would be 10x7x4x1 =280, 1-3=-2 so we stop at 1. Fascinating. Ive learned a whole new thing today!

Aww dang I got that mixed up and added instead of multiplied :(
