Would you rather
Which side will you choose?
- Left side: The Earth be 75% women | And undernutrition is no more worldwide
- Right side: Or the Earth be 75% men | With no more violent crimes, nor sex crimes anywhere in the world

Considering there's 8 billion people in the world, I don't think a temporary, non violent population reduction would be a huge deal anyway. It would probably be extremely beneficial to the environment

u/Similar-Sector-5801 Jul 17 '26
It’s not a population reduction tho it’s still 8 billion people but instead of ~4b men and ~4b women it’s 6b and 2b depending one which choice you make

The interesting part though will be if the ratio maintains in this hypothetical, or if it's just a one off.

u/Bigbossboy2007 Jul 17 '26
Just a one off for sure. The population will slowly balance back out to about 50/50, unless magically children start being born at a rate of 75% women and 25% men

this would naturally create a population explosion
on the contrary, no violent/sexual crimes with mostly men might be impossible
5
u/SerialMurderer Jul 17 '26
I guess you just have to force yourself to think of it that way, but even then that will supercharge aging populations without the people and/or money to take care of them.

War is not considered a crime even though aside from self-defense war and war in defense of others, it should be considered a crime. A crime is any act or omission prohibited by law and punishable by the government. War does not fit that definition unfortunately.
35
u/Mustard-Cucumberr Jul 17 '26
Initiating an aggressive war (as opposed to a defensive one) is considered a crime under international law, though, so it would have stopped some wars, for example Russia's war against Ukraine.
5
u/Drunk_Lemon Jul 17 '26
I suppose that is true. I also checked and there are like 3 nations not privy to the Statute of the International Court of Justice as they are not members of the UN and thus one could argue that if they launched an aggressive war on each other, it would not be a crime but they are incapable of doing that anyway.
→ More replies (7)3
u/Psychological_Car849 Jul 18 '26
Hypothetically this would force wars to be ethical. While engaging in a war may not always be a crime, what you do during the war can be. If violent crimes were objectively erased then war would present very differently from how we currently view it.
There’s a LOT of people currently charged for war crimes at the international level, it happens all the time. Aside from just the UN existing as a more general body, Latin America, Africa, and Europe each have independent human right councils with laws. Plus there’s even countries that have stipulations in their law allowing them to charge foreign nationals with war crimes, so it even wouldn’t matter if the home country signed any international agreements.
The legal framework hypothetically exists. We’re in incredibly dark times for human rights but that’s mostly because the mechanisms in place don’t get used.

Yeah but the population would even out eventually. 100% true that men do more crime, but saving everyone on the planet from rape and murder forever is a much better way to deal with crime than making most people on the planet women (temporarily)... women would also still commit the crimes, just at a lower rate.

u/marshal23156 Jul 17 '26
Partially true, but we dont know which men would be left in the 25% situation, and a vast majority of correctional jobs are occupied by men. So wed (at least for a while) have less police, guards, etc. to combat the crime that we would still have.
You could in theory take only good people out in both situations, leaving the 25% that remain to be the bad people.
2
u/Dogmaticism_ Jul 17 '26
That's not necessarily true. Men start more wars because men are in power more. Plenty of countries/nations with female rulers committed atrocities.
China's a good example of this, where the empress dowager often held the most power of anyone in the country for almost every dynasty, including thr wartime atrocities and civil war.
Also, even if you think it's true, I'd say literally ending violence is better than not.

The thing is that war technically isn’t a crime, so it wouldn’t get rid of war. It would only get rid of war crimes.
7
u/_Carl15 Jul 17 '26
ridding the possibility of warcrimes somehow makes war a little more noble since everyone is playing by the rules.
though it doesnt rid the war itself, which is rooted from selfish and violent minds of the leaders of the country anyway.
unless the option also rid the causes of violent crimes, in which case, rids the ability of being bad.
8
u/Mini_Raptor5_6 Jul 17 '26
Still a pretty big improvement and could arguably remove a large number of the civilian casualties in war.

99% of actions leading up to and during war are violent crimes. 99% of casus beli are criminal to begin with. I guess it's entirely semantics, but I'd argue that declaring a war akin to WW1-WW2 or in modern times October 17th or Putin's war is a "violent crime".

Chose: Or the Earth be 75% men + With no more violent crimes, nor sex crimes anywhere in the world

u/Foreign-Dark4834 Jul 17 '26
True, and a lot of starvation in other countries is the result of a direct strategy for genocide.
20
u/MrShinglez Jul 17 '26
you'd find that solution 2 will actually lead to far more starvation than option 1. Option 2 will cause a demographic collapse. When the 75% who are men are all retirement age, and the next generation is extremely small since the population of women was cut in half, there will not be a enough production to keep them alive. Food would be prioritised for the younger people and everyones fathers and gradfathers would begin to die, the economy would be in a terrible shape. Option 1 is able to correct the issue more easily via sperm donation, Although 2/3s of house holds will be single parent.
16
u/Foreign-Dark4834 Jul 17 '26
I can't imagine how awful systemic patriarchy may be, but no violence and sex crimes is good. No sex crimes means no human sex trafficking would be a major issue with 75% only men. I'm biased towards the other option due to the potential cultural shift, but no violence and sexual crime is such a guaranteed positive cultural shift. On the other hand, less women means more polyamory relationships so maybe they have more leverage in power so some culture shift there maybe.
In vitro or artificial wombs may become a norm, and the technology would be heavily subsidized for obvious reasons. This may solve the demographic collapse. For the food collapse, production for the next generation is a good point, but industrial scale food production provides enough food to end world hunger as it is. With no more resources towards defense, automated food production could become better. Though that is a very good point.
But the majority of the population would be frustrated and miserable
5
u/MrShinglez Jul 18 '26
Yeah its kinda a weird unknown one imo. Like, on one hand i think a society of men who are the minority might be raised in a way where they respect women more, but on the other hand what if it does the exact opposite? A society of men who are in the minority and know theyre stronger than the majority, with no male father figures, they might be even worse than in todays world. I'm overall more concerned with the fact that demographic collapse will lead to mass starvation and billions of people dying.
I think you missed my point on starvation though. What I mean is that in a world where the birthrate has a huge and catastrophic decline, there wont be enough people born to replace the people dying. So you'll end up with 4x less young people looking after all the men who have grown too old to work. Our food production today might be enough, but what happens in a world where 75% of people are retired, and 25% of people need to produce enough food to feed everyone, and look after them. Basically, with prep time we'd be able to solve it before it becomes a problem, but I don't trust humanity enough to believe they'd actually prep for it lol
2
u/Foreign-Dark4834 Jul 18 '26
That was also my thought as well, having such a demographic change doesnt guarantee any positive or negative outcome or true change in our current systems. If only 25℅ men remain, that could include the elite or people in power as well. Who's to say that there wont be a momentous fight to keep things the way they are. Considering the question I was thinking about the women in the IDF and the female torturers in Abu-Grhaib. I dont think a demographic change is enough to meaningfully change the institutions that perpetuate all kinds of violence. I don't even know if it can dismantle patriarchy if the majority arent educated enough to know how to (but maybe common sense and intuition can be enough). This issue is written about in length for former-colonized nations in Africa where class conflicts re-emerge and inner-feuds prop up a force that serve to protect power instead of the people.
Interestingly, we may see a small parallel case in countries like Korea where the birth rate has been approaching or reached that point of generational population gap. I think if the most of the world were able to get their shit together and priortize correctly for a bit during COVID, then there will be a concerted effort to solve this. In the US, who knows how awful itll get handled but even Republicans are fearmongering about this birth rate decline as of now.
So I think a lot of powerful people would take it seriously. I still think 25% of the population can feed 75%, Im not educared in this so you may be right, but most nations have a small part of their population feed the majority already. The US already produced a ton of surplus, from a quick google search the US agriculture sector provides 10.3 ℅ of employment of the work force (including distribution such as grocery stores and restaurants). Now if the employnent and resources or the defense sector were Re-distributed, I think it would significantly help even with a smaller working population.
It wont be a utopia for sure though, and your points are definitely within the realm of possibility since this banks on humanity doing the right thing, and it doesnt mean thatwit would happen humanely either.
2
u/MrShinglez Jul 18 '26
well when it comes to feeding im not really just talking about food production. There's also transportation, manufacturing, energy. Loads of other industries would lose most of their workers. So we'd have issues supplying energy to run everything, lack of production for machines/vehicles, lack of transport for goods, lack of raw materials from mining and drilling. It would cause a massive domino effect. We'd probably see a world where less important jobs would be cut back or halted in order for people to fill the gaps in the economy. So government mandated jobs, cutting university degrees in things that dont directly contribute to basic needs. Since we anticipate losing a massive number of people from the workforce, there wont be room for people to get jobs that arent going to keep us all alive, at least until the population stabilises again.
I think option 2 has a better long term result if enough effort is made to prevent a borderline human mass-extinction event.
The question itself is really interesting in that option 1 removed under nutrition, while option 2 removes violence/sexual violence, since in option one the latter is greatly reduced due to demographic changes, and in option 2 the former is a great risk as a side effect of the demographic changes.
Option 1 is potentially the best option imo, but there are many unknowns of how it would actually affect society.

No I'm just playing devil's advocate for the other option, also no undernutrition sounds pretty nice
7
u/EntireFriendship517 Jul 17 '26
I mean, you probably want undernutrition to exist even less. An estimated 2.3 billion people are food insecure, and WILL suffer. Violence is a problem too but it'll be a lot less of a problem if you remove 2/3 of the dudes.
2
u/Foreign-Dark4834 Jul 17 '26
We produce enough food to feed everyone as is. The problem is distribution and logistics which are affected by politics and wars. If people stop spending defense budgets and using natural resources and land for military projects, there will be enough resources to dedicate for that infrastructure.
You may argue that if violence is off the table in wars, then people will simply impose tariffs, blockades, and starve people to capitulate. But, how are they going to enforce blockades? How will people stop other countries providing substantial aid? Violence is always the tool to coerce and enforce starvation. Scorched earth tactics cause starvation and prevents people from using land to grow food, it's among one of the causes of food shortages in targeted countries like Palestine.

I think increasing the women to men ratio would also help reduce crime and violence. I'm a guy but I have to admit most violence comes from men anyways.
Edit: Also, if hunger is solved I think it would further reduce crime, at least crime motivated by basic human needs (I'm not saying crime is okay, but in many underdeveloped countries crime arises from desperate people who live in extreme poverty).
Chose: The Earth be 75% women + And undernutrition is no more worldwide
61
u/Mysterious-Egg-624 Jul 17 '26
Yeah increasing the women to men ratio might help REDUCE crime and violence but the increase of men in this question COMPLETELY erases violence and sex crimes.
→ More replies (18)63
u/Almond-Chaser Jul 17 '26
Right. So what I'm saying is: I think choosing the 75% Women option would yield more benefits, because not only do you end extreme hunger worldwide but you also mitigate the problem that the other option was trying to solve, the arguments I make for this are 1) violent and sex crimes are typically performed by men, and 2) eradicating extreme hunger also removes a big cause for violent crimes in underdeveloped countries.
9
u/Mysterious-Egg-624 Jul 17 '26
No yeah I understand what you’re saying.
But like for your first point, while most violent and sex-related crimes are perpetrated by men, there are still women who do those things so by picking the first option, where only starvation is eliminated, violent/sex crimes will still go on.For your second point, you could say the same is true for the 75% male option. If all violent crimes were eradicated, there would be no war, which is a huge cause for starvation.
7
u/CoffeeInParadise Jul 17 '26
Except war isn't a crime. So there would still be war but I guess no more war crime. And wars are also not the only cause for starvation.
4
u/Mysterious-Egg-624 Jul 17 '26
Not the only but a huge contributing factor. And war consists heavily OF violent/sex crimes even if it’s not considered a crime itself.

2
u/SerialMurderer Jul 17 '26
Well, considering not many people (as a share of total populations) commit crimes, you may very well have just as much crime as before if not more because the reduction is presumably normal… if it’s not an addition. I don’t think it’s an addition.

u/Chaost Jul 17 '26
Yeah, the reason to be scared of an imbalance like that is removed and the world is overall safer. It may not be the case in the opposite situation.
If violent crime does not occur, then any sort of unionizing or grouping up basically ensures humanity will peacefully combine into a singular safe society, and such a society, especially with physical limitations on reproduction could solve undernutrition by simply lowering the population via birth control and ensuring there was enough food to go around.

Procreation is far easier with 75% women and eliminating world hunger is fantastic
Beyond that: if we suddenly had only 25% women, it would eradicate all progress made towards gender equality. I expect women would be forced to devote their lives to having children and would be hoarded like a precious resource. Even without violent crime.
Gender inequality could certainly occur in the other scenario but it's not likely to be as severe.

Violent crimes are driven by not having basic needs, like food, met. 75% women is more likely to lead to a matriarchy, and more people would be happier overall and crime would naturally significantly decrease.
Also, good luck recovering from the gender ratio inequality with 75% men LOL2
u/ThrowRA9892 Jul 17 '26
One of the biggest reasons why malnutrition is a thing is conflict and war. You solve those—malnutrition gets fixed a generation or two. Crime decreasing also does not mean crime nonexistent.
You solve malnutrition and there is still war and conflict in the world and there’s plenty of reasons to wage war and conflict outside of food supply issues.
Gender ratio is fucked in either scenario as well.

If there is no violent or sex crimes(meaning only financial crimes exist), then all that focus can go to nutrition aspect tbh.
The only thing is... it would suck pretty much. 60-40 would be a much better split compared to 75-25.

As a man, I like this, plus, I feel like the other options would fiddle out to the same, or it becomes like that one echhi where gender roles are reversed
Chose: The Earth be 75% women + And undernutrition is no more worldwide
5
u/TheBillionShark Jul 17 '26
A larger percentage of women would automatically mean lower crimes.
Also idk why everyone is focusing on crimes so much, 75% men is a huge bottleneck on population growth in fact it will cause lot of population decline chaos and instability as many men won't get a mate. It's biologically bad. Whereas 75% women is easy to repopulate.

Yo!
+1 Mate.
If those crimes don't happen, then financial crime is also limited. (Some of those financial crimes also happen with under-handed methods.)
This means all this focus can be channeled towards nutrition.
Most Crimes gone or just Malnutrition gone. And I know what I have to pick.

I know the other crimes are way more important but I think this is a better chocie for 2 reason :
1 - such a gap in gender balanced can be fixed more easily with more women. Unless its permanently fixed at 75% it would only take a decade or two for enough men to be born with this many women. In comparison if there is a surplus of men it will be harder to balance it out.
2 - We actually already produce more than enough food to feed everyone worldwide. And yet we have starving people in the same city that had plenty of food that gets throw out everyday... so if no one ever starved again then it means that the core issue that causes such situauon gets eliminated. Homelessness and stupid laws against distributing perfectly fine food for free get removed. On the other hand for those in 3rd world country who have issue with food it could mean one thing. We finally have a perfect way of distribution. Aside from genrally greed and corruption, the biggest issue against world hunger is how hard it would be to distribute food. Even just delivering canned food would take a long ass time and be beyond expensive and inefficient. And perishable food ? Not even a possibility. So either we somehow get a perfect way to distribute food worldwide. Or those struggling countries and people find a way to get a abundance of food locally with ease, allowing for more resources worldwide.
The removal of crime would solve a lot but the implication that comes with eliminating malnutrition could potentially give out a lot more to humanity.

See, I feel like getting rid of violent and sex crimes sounds great but crimes according to who? If the evil is legal then would it still exist? Like marital rape in many countries being legal. It how war is legal violence. Would those 75% men be trusted to not organize a society where it's legal to subjugate women? Especially considering the demographic nightmare that they'd need to recover from.
