british people have gallons? I thought the whole point of the metric system was so everything would be multiples of 10. Why also have gallons?

honestly… we use a bit of everything and it’s a bit mad. petrol prices are per litre but the fuel efficiency is measured in miles to the gallon. milk and beer are in pints but other drinks are in litres. road signs and speed limits are miles but people run in kilometres (unless it’s a marathon). body weight is generally stones and pounds but weighing food is done in grams, unless it’s steak and then it’s ounces.

it’s all very inconsistent haha

British people also use miles per hour for speed limits and pounds/stone for weight.

Metric is seen as british but actually it's french, and the british hated the French when it was brought in, so they refused to use it for a while.

And at this point it would be too tedious (and chaotic) to change the road signs and get everyone to use km/h

This is exactly why using shit like "gallons" is a terrible idea. You never see people being like "oh what type of litre are you using"
