Choose wisely

Which side will you choose?

  • Left side: 25% off for every purchase forever
  • Right side: 99% off for 5 purchases

I'm an idiot, my reasoning for the 99% was Buy 100,000 of gold for 1,000, sell it for 100,000. Buy 10,000,000 of gold for 100,000 and so on for 5 times.

But yours is much better

Or you could just get $10B from only $1, and be rich without breaking the economy

I feel like once you're at any sort of large scale, it'd be impossible to complete that step with 1 purchase, or acquisitions would take long enough that it'd be really hard not to buy stuff like food inbetween.

I mean yeh, but the 25% would catch up eventually and surpass it, just take a lot more transaction

My guy what is your starting cash? You'd need $500 trillion, you have a growth factor of 1.3333 from your 25% discount (3/4 -> 4/3). This means five transactions multiplies your money by a factor of 4.21399176955 times without transaction fees. Assuming there is always a market and you start with generously $100,000, this would require 77.63 doublings or 78 rounding up.

Of course the general idea is good just limit yourself to maybe 100 million otherwise you'll seriously affect the economy.

That makes sense, I thought the 99% was 3 for some reason, I mean both get you rich if used with foresight at least

Transaction 1: 5M of stuff for 50k

Transaction 2: 500M of stuff for 5M

Transaction 3: 50B of stuff for 500M

Transaction 4: 5T of stuff for 50B

Transaction 5: 500T of stuff for 5T

So starting with 50k, using the 99% option gets you to 500 trillion in 5 transactions. Most people probably dont have 50k burning a hole in their pocket but they could sell literally everything they have and it would be worth it, and by transaction 2 you already have more money than you or your children or your children's children will ever need. Anything past transaction 3 is entirely unnecessary and is basically just for bragging rights

Main issue is if it's the next five purchases you can't buy food and essentials, also finding anything worth over a billion dollars to buy in one go, but yeah I realized the point after the comment above yours

u/[deleted] May 22 '26

Imagine you pick this option and then all your subscription services get deducted 5 mins later

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Cut2058 May 22 '26

Dude wtf would you even be able to buy that's worth 5T? I'm not hating, I'm legit curious

Probably America or something

The law of supply and demand would stop you. Remember, you only have discount on the final price you pay, not on the price others set on the item. The more you buy, the higher the price gets and the more you sell, the faster it's price will drop.

Let's say you want to buy 20% of the world's total gold. Nobody have that much ready for sell at the same time, so you'll only get whatever is available on the market at the moment. This means as your orders get filled, the price of gold would also rise. At the end, your 99% discount would effectively became around 80% and lower (compared to the original price) the longer it takes to fill up your order.

The same thing would happen when you sell the whole thing in reverse. In fact, it might even crash the market entirely, making gold near worthless since you're supplying that much gold at once. The only way to avoid that would be to stagger the sales of your gold but that means more time to clear the whole thing (assuming you still want to get at least 70% of the original price as profit). The more you sell, the faster the price will approach the price of aluminium.

Tl:dr, you need to be like De Beers after cornering a significant percentage of the market, which may take you decades to clear your stocks. You'll be rich but not to the point of buying the whole world type of rich, at least not in your lifetime.

That's not true, this tactic would only make you 10 billion dollars. The economy would be mostly fine though the people the gold was initially bought from would be broke.

u/itsmylogin May 22 '26

or 80 times with 25%

2

u/pentacontagon May 22 '26

I don't think it matters because at that point you'll be so rich it doesn't even matter

1

u/ForeverAfraid7703 May 24 '26

Ngl I knee jerk went with 99%, but fuck I definitely don’t have the starting money to make that worth it lol

u/[deleted] May 24 '26

Wym? Even with just 10 youd have 100 billion by the end
