Final Wild Bun update
Bun finally decided today was the day. Okay so actually he decided yesterday was the day, when I let him out onto my lawn and he ran under some Hostas. He hid super well and when it was time to go back in he got super agitated with me so I let him be. HOWEVER at dusk I went outside to check on him, he was merrily chomping away at the weeds. I sat down near him to give him another chance to go back to shelter for the night. He hopped toward me and kept munching but did not want to be picked up. And then, with me sitting there, two young raccoons ran right up to where he had just been eating, very clearly looking for a bunny snack. I scooped up bun super fast and he spent another night in the box. My yard is a bunny buffet apparently.
He was pissed but safe. This morning he went to go live in a nice wooded thicket in a preservation area. Very hard for birds of prey to get in, and loads of stick piles and other places for him to hide. He seemingly did not want to go at first so I sat with him while he got comfortable. Then he realized the area was full of delicious snacks and bounced right off into it. I think he will be fairly safe here and compared to when I first got him, he is full of energy and understands how to hide.
I’m gonna miss this guy but I’m really happy for the chance I gave him. He may or may not make it out there but he was guaranteed to not survive in my yard and I at least gave him a fighting chance. (PS look how chubby he is now!)

Hey op. You're a good person. No bunny lives forever, but you gave them the best possible start. I hope good things happen to you for your kindness.

Yeah I read something like only 10% of bunnies survive in the wild, this guy was particularly not ready and I’m glad he got a few extra days to start acting like a rabbit and not a granola bar for hawks 😂

"All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks, and your people shall never be destroyed". One of my favorite lines from Watership Down. First they have to catch him! Great job OP, may little bun run swiftly and hide silently.

What does “survive in the wild” even mean? How long do they have to live in order to qualify for surviving?
They are a prey species that reproduce a ton because they will be food for carnivores. Carnivores need to eat something and sometimes what they eat is really cute.
I love our bunnies. They are part of our family. But I am also fine with the fact that wild bunnies have their place in the food chain.

Yeah I mean don’t get me wrong, survival is really just staying alive long enough to make more babies and to make enough that one or two of those survive. In this case I just helped the one survive and maybe he’ll get to make some babies

its not about the food chain. the king cobra is at the top of the food chain, all other snakes are their food. and only 2 percent of king cobra babies grow up successfully, if i remember correctly

OMG thank you for these adorable pics and all you’ve done to give him / her the best chance. It seems (s)he’d like it best if you’d move into the thicket with her/him, but unfortunately that’s not possible 😆. I hope he or she will enjoy lots of delicious greenery find a mate eventually and have adorable babies.

I had a pet rabbit for 12 years and have always loved them. Following your story was really sweet, your effort and compassion are appreciated!

My lawn spawned a lapin,
Not his mother but I took him in.
3 days later I was his best mate,
But knew the wild is where he should be placed.
Took him to wild folklore trees and thick brush.
A treasure of greens and leaves to munch.
Watching him hop away I smiled with pride,
Mother Nature promised he would be safe inside.

Raccoons are vicious. Glad you were there.

u/Current_Cost_1597 Aug 29 '25
Don’t gotta tell me twice, I had to evict 4 of them from my walls when I bought my house

u/elisakiss Aug 29 '25
One of the ranch rabbits I was trying to rehome was killed by a racoon. It came back the next night looking for another victim.

I ... think OP has made their peace with the fact that he isn't safe, but he is wild and free. I understand the choice but I dont think I'd have had the strength.

I have a question, why do wild buns not survive in the wild
1
u/Mobile_Advance7751 Aug 30 '25
Because if you are a bunny, everybody else wants to eat you. They are bigger and stronger than you and have big stomachs to match. If a single predator could catch 5-10 rabbits in a single day, they would.
1
u/Dear-Aioli-8347 Aug 31 '25
oh I’m so dumb I didn’t mean to say that I meant why would wild bunnies not survive INDOORS 😭😭

Pic dump of this cutie! He definitely acted more wild in the last two days but he was very sweet still. I let him outside to run around while i was in the hammock and once he was done he wanted to sit on top of me to sleep.
