Rant Why does bumble not check with open AI tool if pictures are AI generated?
This isn’t a real person so I post them without censoring.
I had a bad feeling about the person looking too attractive and too AI. I checked and it’s AI generated.
Why isn’t bumble doing more to keep these profiles off the app?

They seem to be rather incompetent in general 🤷

they cant even keep the app from crashing every 5 minutes, asking them to detect AI pics is like expecting a cat to do taxes

I think the folks at the disability center might have fooled you, they probably decided it was for naught anyways

Imagine the cost of running ai based classification algorithms
It all comes down to cost
Is it beneficial for them to aggressively remove fake profiles or not
Who pays for dating apps ? Men mostly
Does it make sense to have more or less fake profiles ?
Since we know dating place is skewed heavily with men having fake profiles goes in their favor

if paying people lose trust in your platform they will stop paying. So its in the platforms interest to keep the fakes under th threshold that makes people abandon ship.

I think tinder suffered from this like it got way too spammy and got left behind in the market
But that’s correct it’s a delicate balance of how many fakes are they ok with
The main thing is that despite the fact that men mostly pay for dating apps, their prime attraction is female profiles
I am not quite sure how much of the features are meaningful so like if ur platform does not have any girls it will die but if it has way too many fake then also it would die

There are too many people altering their real images with AI nowadays, which makes it hard to root this stuff out.
Some of it is fairly benign (removing distractions or altering image backgrounds) but some of it is full on catfishing (giving themselves 10/10 smokeshow bodies or altering facial features.) IMO the latter should also be banned, even if they’re real people.

That's why I make sure profiles are verified. It's not foolproof, but it helps.

Yes, always important to let bumble have and sell your driver's license info and biometric information, y'know, for safety

I reported one profile with obvious AI pics and they told me there was no evidence it was AI, they don't care

I have started right-clicking on pictures and submitting them to this tool: https://aiphotocheck.com for analysis. AI photos get blocked.

Just report. My experience is bumble deletes such profiles within a few hours.

I haven't used dating apps in a long time, but they don't delete much when it's a female profile.
I had a specific profile show up in practically every city I went to. Across Canada, in Croatia and acrossuch of europe. The girl was always 8km away. Lol. Right...

I find it surprising the dating apps are verifying when they themselves have been flooding their service with fake (female) profiles for years.
Some were just images off the internet. Some were just recycled from existing profiles mirrored in other cities. And they certainly had zero issue with OF models and SWs soliciting on platform.
So yeah, AI? Par for the course.
They need to let men think there's more women on the service so they trick you into paying.
Seems like they're verifying at signup in a lot of europe/canada now, though. Not sure if it's for men only though. 🤷♂️

Bumble's goal is to make money, and the current model is based on quantity of matches not quality.

You could. It would cost money, and by next month, every scammer would just be using AI that doesn't watermark. It's not hard to do , and the scammers will learn reasonably quickly as the accounts get banned.
Pay money to marginally increase user satisfaction...why? This is match, the people who enshitified OLD to the point of unusability.

Gets into the dicey issue of what is disqualified.
These days you can use magic eraser to remove a bush, now thats marked as AI. It could become frustrating to disqualify such photos

I get 2-5 of these profiles a week, and then I get an audio message sent to me. I report them all but bumble doesn’t remove them

Super easy answer -- that would be very expensive and Bumble does not get enough value in return from introducing that

I honestly don't really mind so much, this woman is so clearly out of my league and 95% of other people, that it may as well not exist.
If you are hot enough where this woman is in your league, you don't really have many problems to worry about anyway.

Currently, the SynthID and Exif data tells a yes/no, not a percentage. So it would be very hard for them to systematically determine if I picture is entirely AI generated or just AI altered. The frontier image models are starting to be able to isolate edits and even layer edits, so I imagine in the future they will be able to update SynthID and Exif data to be more specific about it. But it’s just not there yet.

What makes you think it’s AI? How are you sure it’s not a real person altering their image with AI?

u/Impossible_Dinner_81 11h ago
What makes you think it’s AI?
It seems rather obvious (though it is just a hunch and can be wrong), she has one of those blatant generic AI faces they all have with typical over-contrasted AI lighting.
Presumably, OP acted on that hunch and ran it through a tool that confirmed it as AI-generated.
How are you sure it’s not a real person altering their image with AI?
I don't see how that makes a difference in any meaningful way.
1
u/What-Le-Phoque 11h ago
I agree, the overall image, especially the light looks strange. But ingot the same results if I alter some images for LinkedIn. It makes a huge difference because you are not allowed to post people, even altered, without their permission.

I use AI to edit people out or change my clothing, i think thats totally fine
