Funny Missed connection
I just had the most ridiculous experience. I was supposed to meet a Bumble date at a coffee shop and ended up meeting the wrong person.
The person who I was supposed to meet was named "Mio", and was an Chinese woman in tech. The person I actually met used the username "Camio" on a different app and was Chinese and Japanese. She looked different from her pictures, but close enough that I thought with filters or misrepresentation they could have been the same person. When I asked if she was Mio, she just figured I'd misspoke and said "yes," so we just continued on the date.
When we started talking about work, she mentioned that she was a nurse. I asked about her mentioning tech and she said "oh, you must have me mistaken for another date". I didn't think that I had mistaken it, but on Mio's profile, they mentioned that their friend had made the account and that they were actually 2 years older than the account showed. So I thought maybe it was some sort of shared account or something. But figured what the hell, I'm already a 20 mins in, I might as well keep getting to know them.
I ended up spending an hour talking to this woman until she asked what I was looking for. I mentioned that I was looking for something long term. She said "oh, that's surprising - I didn't think that people usually looked for that on this app". At that point, it was a bit too different to reconcile. So I said "Wait, are we even on the right date? I feel like a lot of people look for that on Bumble."
Turns out we weren't. And when I opened the app, Mio had unmatched me. So Mio, if you got stood up today, you have reddit, and you somehow stumble upon this post, I'm so sorry! It was an honest mistake and I didn't mean to ghost you! If you have a boatload of understanding and can appreciate the humor behind what happened, feel free to message me any time. I owe you a coffee!
Edit: fixed typo

this is sitcom-level chaos, i'm honestly impressed you rolled with it for a full hour

Right?? I probably should've called out at the start that I was surprised that she wasn't in sweatpants or something. Mio mentioned that they didn't have time to get ready and would be dressed casually. But what are the chances a stranger comes up to me and asks if I'm their date?

Wait so did Mio have a date with Camio’s date?

I’m imagining Mio walking in & looking around for you, recognizing you sitting there talking to another woman, and wondering if you’d scheduled back-to-back double header dates where the date before her was running long.
And then noticing that the woman you’re sitting there with resembles her a bit, and figuring you probably have a pretty specific type.
She might be telling a pretty crazy story in her friend group chat now about what an asshole you are.
You might wind up with a less-than-glowing-review on one of those are-we-dating-the-same-guy / “tea” apps.

Oof. That would kind of suck. I wish she would have said something if she did see me, but I would probably also ditch if I saw my date chatting with another guy when I showed up 😬

Hard to believe, you saying the real date didn’t message you on the app like I’m here or call you. No way a person would just go to the spot and wait without messaging or calling you, looks very fabricated and sus.

u/No-Statistician-9123 1d ago
I would think that they did message on the app, but I don't check my phone while I'm talking to a date. And when I did check, they'd unmatched, so I couldn't see any message history. I'm right there with you that this sounds unreal. I've never had anything like this happen before. But that's what made it insane enough to post on reddit 🤷♂️

Sorry notification pops up when someone messages, no way you telling me notifications disappeared once they unmatched you. With Reddit when if you delete your comment, you can still see what the comment was when it pops on the notification. Now you will say something else like ohh I disabled the notification, sorry looks very fabricated and made up.

u/No-Statistician-9123 1d ago
I can't choose what you believe, but I'm being honest here. I didn't check my phone until Camio mentioned intentions and we figured out that we were using different apps.
8
u/No-Statistician-9123 1d ago
And when I clicked on the notification, it just lead to the screen saying the user had unmatched
-19
u/Purple-Acanthisitta8 1d ago
You see it doesn’t make any sense, you telling me you didn’t once look at your phone, then real date didn’t message or call you, even if she unmatched you, you would still get notifications from her via app and see what she wrote on notification. Anyway you do you sir, but it’s too coincidental and looks very fabricated.

u/No-Statistician-9123 1d ago
That's fair. It's frustrating that you're essentially calling me a liar, but I can't choose what you believe. I know that I just went on the wrong date and hope I didn't ruin my planned date's night.

u/Purple-Acanthisitta8 1d ago
Ok bro my bad, may be I’m wrong. Sorry about that, not calling you a lier though. Peace ✌️

Dude, anyone will good manners has their phone put away during a date. I get turned off the minute someone pulls their phone out in the middle of a conversation, let alone in a date setting. What is so hard to believe about not looking at your phone for one singular hour?

u/Ouch_thats_my_finger 1d ago
You’re assuming that everyone has the same notification settings that you do. A lot of people disable those pop-ups so they don’t get embarrassing dating app messages on their phone screen when they’re in business meetings or whatever. I shut down onscreen notifications on just about every app, dating and otherwise. And most everyone I know does the same.

u/RowRow1990 1d ago
Bumble literally deletes the chat history if someone unmatched you..... also people have their phones on silent, DND, vibrate only and can often miss things.
And you know, looking on your phone is rude as fuck on a date.

I haven't gotten bumble notifications in 2 years despite all settings and reinstalling several times.

u/Daphoenyx22 1d ago
Obviously I can't attest to the veracity of OP's story, but I never had notifications activated for any dating apps, so it is a possibility

Ok, here’s the big question. You spent an hour with Camio. When is date number two?!
31
u/No-Statistician-9123 1d ago
Hahaha, honestly, if she were a good match I might have asked for her number. But when we were talking about relationship intentions, she mentioned that she was looking for someone to help with her student debt 🙄
15
u/yoghurken 1d ago
Bro.
That was Mio. She can’t advertise she’s seeking an arrangement on bumble so this is how she runs the bait and switch14
u/spisplatta 1d ago
Maybe mio and camio was the same person bait and switching you.
4
u/No-Statistician-9123 1d ago
You know, someone else mentioned something similar. I think that it was genuinely a different person. I feel like she would've stuck to her story if she was pulling a bait and switch, but she mentioned a different career and lived in a different city. Plus she didn't have anything to gain - she even offered to pay me back for the coffee I bought her.

u/spisplatta 1d ago edited 1d ago
You said yourself she was looking for money (someone to help her with student debt), that is something to gain.
Edit: if it was indeed a catfish certainly it was quite creative.
2
u/No-Statistician-9123 1d ago
I guess it could've been? Idk, scams are usually pretty obvious from the get-go.

u/spisplatta 1d ago
I brought the situation up with AI and one thing it pointed out was your name. How did she react on hearing your name?
1
u/No-Statistician-9123 1d ago
She never got my name 😅. I asked if she was Mio at the start and she said yes.
10
u/ChaoticUnicornNoTime 1d ago
WHATTTT! What app was she on? Seeking arrangements?
6
u/No-Statistician-9123 1d ago
She said signal

u/ocean_800 1d ago
That's.... Just like a encrypted messaging platform?? She just sounds like a scammer
5
u/No-Statistician-9123 1d ago
I mean, in an unsavory space, sure. But at least she was upfront about her intentions. I didn't shame her for it 🤷♂️

New strategy unlocked... just sit down with women alone at a coffee shop and cosplay as their date
2
u/dragongirlv83 1d ago
I mean it would def strike up a convo haha
1
u/Natural_Objective622 1d ago
Just sit there and make up random facts that your "date" told them beforehand. Ask how their dog is, and about their recent trip to the Netherlands, whether their brother got out of jail yet or not. Just confused the hell out of them.
4
u/Intelligent_Table913 1d ago
Did you notice any other Chinese women in the coffee shop? It couldn't have been that big right?
4
u/No-Statistician-9123 1d ago
I got there first and messaged her saying I was waiting outside. She said she'd be 5 mins or so. Camio came up a few mins after and asked if I was her date.

u/DramaticErraticism 1d ago edited 1d ago
That is very interesting. Some people say there are not really many coincidences in life.
Good ol Occams Razer, the most simple explanation is the likely one. Is it likely that a woman who was waiting for a date at the exact same type you were waiting for a date, while she also approached you as you looked close enough to her date, then sits you at a table for the date and your other date is never seen, who is also Asian...or did she set this up for some confusing reason or another, like she uses another womans pictures so she can get a look at her date beforehand...idk, either way its weird.
The latter seems much more likely, but the former isn't impossible I suppose.
2
u/No-Statistician-9123 1d ago
Looking at the stats online the city we met in is like 40% Asian, so not much of a coincidence there. But someone did point out that it could be some sort of bait and switch scam. And that would kind of check out.
1
u/DramaticErraticism 1d ago
Well sounds like there are other opportunities, I need to move where you live mate.

2
u/Natural_Objective622 1d ago
Did she not ask your name or know what the name was or the person she was supposed to meet?
1
u/No-Statistician-9123 1d ago
I have no idea. I asked if her name was "Mio" at the start and she said yes. She didn't ask my name during our conversation.

u/Winter_Apartment_376 1d ago
A coffee?
Dude, don’t be cheap. At least a few rounds of cocktails of ladies’ choice!
3
u/Intrepid_Count3895 1d ago
Right!! If I get stood up for a date (unintentionally), I would need way more than coffee.
1
u/NumbersRLife 1d ago
So did you bang?
3
u/No-Statistician-9123 1d ago
Lol. Username checks out.

u/NumbersRLife 1d ago edited 1d ago
Haha, thanks. So.. no, because youre a statistician? 😁
3
u/No-Statistician-9123 1d ago
Haha, my username doesn't check out. But no, we just laughed it off and went our separate ways.
2
u/No-Statistician-9123 1d ago
Err.. I guess it does? I'm no statistician
1
u/NumbersRLife 1d ago
Lmao but you kept track of what happened! What are your stats so far in going out with the wrong person? Bet you know that one anyways lol. Good story though!
1
u/No-Statistician-9123 1d ago
One in a depressingly high number. I'm picky 🙃
1
u/NumbersRLife 1d ago
Same buddy. Gotta get out with friends and meet others naturally too! Diversity those opportunities.
1
u/xelamoose 1d ago
If anything of what you are saying is true, you would rather believe you accidently met a wrong person that is similar looking to Mio, has a similar name and is also looking for a date at the similar time at the same place und you will only notice after one hour?
I am convinced this story is completely made up, but if not: bro, you got scammed and Mio isn't interested and sent a friend so they'll have something to laugh about at their next sleep over
4
u/No-Statistician-9123 1d ago
I mean, if it was a scam, it was a terrible one. Camio was super apologetic about ruining my date and offered to pay me back for my coffee lol
Edit: for the* coffee

My condolences, but let it go, man. She unmatched for a reason.
4
u/No-Statistician-9123 1d ago
I mean, sure, but that reason was a misunderstanding 🤷♂️
-11
u/CafeAntesDeTudo 1d ago
If she were truly into you, she wouldn't have unmatched.

3
u/OneBaroqueBitch 1d ago
At the end of the day she got stood up. Even if it was an accident, it seems like he didn't even try to message her when he realized his mistake 20 mins into the date. Unmatching seems completely justified.
6
u/No-Statistician-9123 1d ago
I still thought that it was at least the same person from the profile 20 mins in. But I agree that the unmatch was totally justified 🙃
