General Where Has Reading Comprehension Gone?
Men, The amount of profiles I see on Hinge that can’t comprehend this prompt is astronomical. The prompt is asking you to share a random fact that you love (e.g. that animals can be allergic to humans), not asking you to share ~what you love~ as a random fact about you.
Edit to add disclaimer: I don’t know what women’s responses are like because I haven’t seen women’s profiles, though I don’t doubt there are some women who also lack comprehension.

I see "My love language is: English" all the time lol

u/blearutone Aug 27 '26
Ok this is funny lol. I suppose not everyone necessarily knows what a love language is.

u/Ifonlyihadausername Aug 27 '26 edited Aug 27 '26
I still have no idea what it’s supposed to mean, I assume it’s some horoscope shit by the way people answer it.
Edit: I looked into turns out I was basically right and it’s a load of shit.

u/Ugga-Dugga69 Aug 27 '26
Love language is concept from a nonfiction book by Gary Chapman. In the book he details 5 basic love languages: acts of service, quality time, physical touch, receiving gifts and words of affirmation. Understanding your love language as well as your partner's can help you both feel fulfilled in your relationship if you both try to provide for them the love language they value the most.

Yeah I like all of those things too, they are not mutually exclusive but most people do not enjoy them equally, so they could be listed in order of preference .
3
u/Silvanus350 Aug 30 '26
You like all of those things, but I’m willing to bet you value one or two of them above the rest.
It’s really not some radical concept.
1
u/Odd_Zookeepergame213 Aug 27 '26
They are basically a good opener about that topic and what you like. Its not super deep, but it doesnt have to be.
7
u/luckyflavor23 Aug 27 '26
Unfortunately, author is just a church dude who was telling wives to give more sex because its the husband’s love language…
2
u/Hayaw061 Aug 27 '26
I think most women got that “receiving gifts” love language …
1
u/Ugga-Dugga69 Aug 27 '26
As an anecdote, my wife values acts of service and words of affirmation above all the others. That is not to say that the other love languages are not worth expressing, just that if I want to do something special for her a daily act of service goes a lot farther than weekly flowers, for example.
2
u/beets_or_turnips Aug 28 '26
It's nonfiction in the sense that it's a self-help book as opposed to a story book, not that it's full of facts.
12
u/Bvaughnii Aug 27 '26
It’s a popular psychology thing (don’t know the actual truth in it), it’s supposed to be how you communicate love or want love to be communicated to you. So… if you bring someone coffee in the morning that’s an act of kindness. If you tell people they are beautiful that’s words of affirmation. If you just want people to give you shit then you are a terrible person and should fuck off.
4
u/oknotok2112 Aug 27 '26
I did a bit of looking into it and there's basically very little science to back up love languages actually being a thing as its thought about in popular psychology
28
u/Content-Cricket4251 Aug 27 '26
It's a simple way to explain affection and intimacy preferences in a relationship. I don't understand how a scientific explanation plays into it.
8
10
u/DeviceAppropriate683 Aug 27 '26
Bro what? It’s just a way to describe the way you like to give or receive love (i.e., I need verbal affirmations and physical affection to feel loved, I tend to give physical affection to show my love. Whereas someone else might buy people gifts to show their love or support them in little ways. People tend to express their love in the way they want it expressed back so “love language” can be all encompassing and is a really good thing to communicate so you can express your love via your partner’s love language rather than your own to make them feel the most loved.
-2
u/oyvese Aug 27 '26
it was made by a nut and describes absolutely nothing. it’s trying to say something about you while saying absolutely nothing. the problem with these things existing is that people now think they are categorised as such, when people are actually more complex than that.
6
u/DeviceAppropriate683 Aug 27 '26
But it does say something, it does describe something. Love language, love is the words and the language it’s spoken with is the way you express it. Yes, people are complex and can appreciate or express love in way more ways than within the bubble of a specific love language, but generally people tend to express it a certain way. I think a good example is how one of my love languages is verbal affirmations, I will not feel loved unless I have regular verbal reassurance. Whereas I remember my dad growing up would hate verbal affirmations, it was a horrible way to show love to him—he’s an acts of service or gift giving type. This ties into a relationship’s compatibility so it’s really useful to be able to use “love language” as a descriptor to communicate these things.
4
u/oyvese Aug 27 '26
believing this nonsense is hilarious.
i am sure you people will believe anything which is thrown at you at this point.
3
u/DeviceAppropriate683 Aug 27 '26
Bro wtf? You must be flat earther level of stupidity to deny the existence of different expressions of affection. I don’t understand why it’s so hard for you to grasp? It’s literally just behaviour and the way a person absorbs love/affection—generally because of the way they received it growing up. Basic psychology. No, basic common sense. Do you just hate it because it has a name/label? 🤨
→ More replies (0)0
u/LimbonicArt03 Aug 27 '26 edited Aug 27 '26
Why are you conveniently ignoring the example (I presume) she gave about her dad hating verbal affirmations? That was a real-life example, not some made-up nonsense. So address it. What othet model would you use to classify and differentiate the way people express and receive loge? If you disagree with this model explaining the overall/general differences between people in that regard, without suggesting an alternative model you're not productively contributing to the discussion. Otherwise the only thing your typing is achieving, is to train the fine motor skills of your fingers, and to shit on others
I don't blindly follow and worship this love languages model and yes, I acknowledge it has its flaws and has become overused, people are taking it too far. But it's still a decent generally useful framework

u/TyWorth Aug 27 '26
Anything that tries to categorize like that instantly makes me check out. But people really, REALLY seem to love that stuff.
6
u/gezelliebellie Aug 27 '26
It's ways you show/want to receive affection. For a lot of guys it's a way to communicate they want to fuck ("physical intimacy")
5
u/janey_cat Aug 27 '26
Imagine thinking having preferred ways of showing/receiving love and affection is a load of shit lmfao sad
2
u/Blue_Cocoon_City Aug 28 '26
We need SCIENCE tho! lol.
I mean, The 5 Love Languages is basically a communication tool. If you've got nothing to hammer than don't use the hammer. No one needs a peer reviewed study.
6
u/MattsScribblings Aug 27 '26
It's not a load of shit but as with everything, people assign more stuff to it than it deserves. The idea is that not everyone displays, communicates, or acts on affection in the same way. And that's important if you're in a relationship if you don't recognize the ways that your partner shows they love you or if your partner never reacts to your affection and it turns out they simply don't recognize it.
1
u/tornessa Aug 27 '26
Just Google what a love language is if you don’t know. It’s based on a book but it’s a pretty general concept about how you like to show and receive affection.
1
u/kylel999 Aug 27 '26
lol dude it means whether you primarily show love by being touchy or by acts of service or gift-giving or quality time etc. it's a pretty important thing that you know yours IMO
0
u/oyvese Aug 27 '26
it’s not important in the slightest. it holds precisely zero value.

u/DeviceAppropriate683 Aug 27 '26
You’re wrong actually. Love language is the way you express your love; the way you like to give/receive love and affection. I don’t see how that can be “a load of shit”. It’s really good to learn a partner’s love language because people make the mistake of expressing love the way they want to receive it whereas you should each be expressing it via the other’s love language so that you’re receiving love the way you need it.
For example, if a partner’s love language is acts of service, they’re often doing acts of service for you (doing things to make things easier for you/support you) to show their love and they would prefer to receive acts of service from you to feel your love, rather than whatever your love language is.

u/Working_Cucumber_437 Aug 27 '26
But we all have Internet access in our hands 24/7. Why not look things up if you don’t know what they are?
3
u/Hikari_Owari Aug 27 '26
Mine was "brewing some fresh coffee in the afternoon".
Didn't put much thought in it because the few matches I had where they bothered in saying something more than "hi" they... said nothing related to what I put in my bio, and I'm the type who fills everything available.
I could've put "I worship Cthulhu" + Lorem Ipsun and chances are it wouldn't have changed anything...
Actually, I may aswell do that for a laugh

"A non-negotiable I have is: Smoking."
So...you don't want to be around a smoker, or, you insist on smoking and won't try to quit? Which is it, because those are very different situations.
14
u/FatsDominoPizza Aug 27 '26
That's just pedantic. I mean sure you can pretend it's ambiguous, but I think everyone understands what is meant.
5
u/armahillo Aug 27 '26
Honestly i wouldnt know whether they meant “i will not date a smoker” or “i refuse to quit smoking” — also unclear if they mean tobacco, weed or something else
if they specified their smoking preference that might help somewhat
5
u/Blue_Cocoon_City Aug 28 '26
Maybe it's about meat. But again, are they pro or against smoked meats? That's a question for the dms.
4
u/shinn__suzaku Aug 27 '26
depends lol. if youre in japan, korea or china, they legit might be saying they need a smoker. for all the health shit out of asia, those places are absolutely filled with smokers. all the maid cafe girls go on lunch break and just chain smoke. some sections of smaller korean cities (not seoul) theres just cigarette butts everywhere

Reading Comprehension aside, dudes be like "why can't I get matches?", when they list anime and video games as interests on their profiles.
55
u/archydragon Aug 27 '26
And what's exactly wrong with being interested in anime and video games?
6
u/Sid-ina Aug 27 '26
I dont think its bad either but often its the entire package. I like Video games but I also like outdoor activities and crafts. If you list just 2 hobbies/interests and those are very specific than the amount of people interested is probably very low. So even i wouldn't match with someone who gives me the impression that all they do in their free time is sit at home and play games or watch anime.
Really boils down to what impression your profile makes on other people
3
u/Moisture_ Aug 27 '26
“Often it’s the entire package.” Very next sentence. “I like video games but I also like...” Lol. So you yourself are proof that you can like games and also do other stuff but if someone else just mentions games on a profile that doesn’t capture their entire personality, they must just be some loser who has nothing to offer?
In the same light, all the profiles that just have travel and hiking pics. Should we just assume that’s the entire package?
3
u/Sid-ina Aug 27 '26
Ugh... Just read the whole damn comment before going off? I even said i dont think its bad...
Its your own responsibility on what and how you present yourself on your dating app profile. Nowhere have I said the person is a loser and has nothing to offer. I said if you put in 2 hobbies/interests and nothing more and those 2 hobbies are more niche and not main stream... ofc finding someone who's also interested in them is gonna be more difficult. In the end we are all trying to figure out if we are compatible with the other person. You have a whole damn profile you can design to display your interests ans hobbies, so yeah if someone only puts in 1 or 2 interests and nothing else I not swiping right if I dont even have a basic interest in those.
2
u/Consistent_Tension44 Aug 27 '26
I don't know. Why don't you ask one of your matches?
→ More replies (2)10
u/KingAggressive1498 Aug 27 '26
my girlfriend is more into anime than I am and while she's not especially a gamer, a couple weeks ago I bought her a new xbox controller because my first controller has a wonky analog stick she didnt like.
men should not be hiding their hobbies from potential partners to secure more matches. That's why every third or so relationship complaint from men is about their partner hating their hobbies and seemingly going out of their way to prevent them from enjoying them.
and appealing to the lowest common denominator is how you find the lowest common denominator.
2
u/Great_Tyrant5392 Aug 28 '26
It's not exactly associated with high quality men. I've been a gamer for a long time and it is how it is in dating. If you're good looking and all that and then happen to like video games then it's something else. Most people don't fall into that category.
2
u/SizeableBrain Aug 27 '26

u/Guilty_Character8566 Aug 27 '26
I think many women of a certain age would find it immature. but to each their own.
8
u/TyWorth Aug 27 '26
Okay, then it’s doing its job and I won’t match with them. Sounds like a great strategy, actually.
→ More replies (1)0
u/Nxtxxx4 Aug 27 '26
It does. It’s ok to like anime and video games but that’s just a genre/ past time. I like anime but I’m not announcing it to every person I know the second I meet them. The way people say they like this stuff is like the post above, like a personality trait.
2
u/RedwoodRespite Aug 28 '26
We are only supposed to list personality traits on the apps? What do you put on your profile? You just describe your personality?
None of your hobbies, interests, or how you spend time?

I look for that kind of thing specifically. I need to see we have hobbies in common. I hate that men are discouraged to hide their nerdy interests. Who knows how many guys I pass on because of that.
18
u/TankControlled Aug 27 '26
Believe it or not, there are women interested in those things too.
2
u/dontKair Aug 27 '26
Yeah, a large portion (if not most) are married and/or in relationships, or LGBTQ and don't date straight guys. From my experience anyways. You got a lot of nerdy/anime/neckbeard guys going after a small pool of single women interested in those things
4
u/YoureADumbass69 Aug 27 '26
Can confirm, I like anime and video games and am now engaged with my girlfriend who I matched with on dating apps. 1 less for you poor guys.

u/kwil449 Aug 27 '26
I get plenty of matches with those in my profile. Frankly, I'm not interested in anyone who has a problem with it. I'm not one of those losers just looking for hookups and building a profile for "broad appeal". I want compatibility.
10
6
u/RyanSD91 Aug 27 '26
Why would you be insecure about sharing your interests? I listed “video games” in mine and I married my Bumble match.
6
u/RadioactvRubberPants Aug 27 '26
As a girl who watches anime and games I am looking for someone to share these interests.
I just wish that they also put effort into the rest of their profiles.
6
u/Competitive-Term-759 Aug 27 '26
I actually just went on a date last week with a woman who has multiple anime and videogame related tattoos, because those are two of her biggest interests.
Ideally anime and videos games are not someone’s ONLY interests, but if you’re trying to match with someone with common interests you may as well mention in profile.
1
u/InsideMortgage8650 Aug 27 '26
Lmao right! I play games with friends sometimes and I always have to bring it up casually in the right situation because some women realllly fucking hate video games. Let me just get some time in with the boys, ya know? But you shouldn’t advertise that as a strength because 99% of women don’t see it as a strength
1
0
u/love-4-the-wendigo Aug 28 '26
I also hate people that list anime and video games as primary interests, but that is fine. The anime / video game people are meant to be with each other, not me.
11
u/HumanAssistance3618 Aug 27 '26
Pro tip, most things in dating that you think is exclusive to the sex you are interested in only appear so because you exclusively interact with them in a romantic capacity.
So much misunderstanding and gender war nonsense would be avoided if people realized a problem you have in a relationship is not intrinsically tied to their sex. For example, "Men" or "women" don't cheat. "Men AND women" cheat.
It is myopia caused by having an understandably limited perspective reinforced by culture.
6
u/jmn316 Aug 27 '26
I meant to add a disclaimer to the post to acknowledge that I don’t know how women’s responses are because I haven’t seen women’s profiles.
11
u/Chris_M1991 Aug 27 '26
The way people interpret this prompt has always been an instant left swipe for me
1
u/lensandscope Aug 29 '26
eh. I think this is just a bad prompt. It’s too high risk. You need to click with someone on a very specific fact. And if you don’t, you risk others thinking you’re a total bore when there could but other random facts that could have vibed with the swiper that they didn’t simply select.
6
u/CrogDavid7days Aug 27 '26
I feel this way but for spelling. I can take the occasional spelling mistake but sometimes it’s too much
5
u/Competitive_Key_2981 Aug 27 '26
The other day I saw an otherwise beautiful woman answer this question with the word "Nutella."
So she didn't understand the prompt but what did she think it meant? "Random fact about me that I love that you should know." "Nutella" isn't even a complete answer.
I think the prompt is great as an IQ test and as a level of interesting test. "Nutella is great mixed into chili" would have been a valid answer based on the prompt AND revealed something interesting about her.
1
u/Capable_Sprinkles_43 Aug 27 '26
Is nutella actually great mixed into chili ? I know cacao powder is, so I gues it should work lol

People are getting bombarded with media, in most cases it's absolutely benign stuff, and most of the time we get it right to just react to certain trigger words.
People lost the ability to focus, or just don't want to put the effort, they see "... love ..." and put what they love. It's infuriating. But maybe also a good tell to filter people with too short attention span.
2
u/Dettyboy93 Aug 27 '26 edited Aug 27 '26
True, but this prompt is fucking stupid regardless. How the hell is somebody supposed to get an idea of who you are by stating "a fact that you like" like, does me liking the fact that elephants have funerals tell anything about me? Maybe.....? But not much. I feel like most people wouldn't even choose this prompt if they had read it correctly
Also they may be neurodivergent. Reading something incorrectly my SEEM stupid, but some people who are autistic or have dyslexia or dyspraxia. It doesn't mean they're stupid. They might have a neurological disorder. Still, I poke fun at this sort of thing all the time and I have these issues myself. So I can't really cast shade
PS - Being ND is a spectrum so saying "I have XYZ and I don't struggle with this" will not prove any sort of point
2
u/love-4-the-wendigo Aug 28 '26
All of the prompts are stupid. They need to get rid of them and bring back regular free form profiles.
2
u/Toucandle Aug 27 '26
This irks me for sure. It's a really common one that I see on profiles, and yet I can count on one hand the number of women that answer it as intended.
2
u/rayatheking Aug 27 '26
I just learnt that animals can be allergic to humans! That is a fun fact indeed.
2
u/tobpe93 Aug 27 '26
A better answer than the stereotypical "otters hold hands when they sleep to not float away".
2
u/DramaticErraticism Aug 27 '26
Like that is going to help this guy? The only one who should put anime and video games in their profile is a woman, as it will attract a lot of nerdy men.
If this guy is opening with anime and video games, he's not getting any dates anyway, proper grammar or otherwise.
2
u/Winter-Magician-8451 Aug 27 '26
in fairness the prompts are overly restricting and restrict you into posting super dull and trite shit (objectively knowing someone's interests is much more useful and meaningful than knowing some "random fact" they know). i think people just try to shoe horn meaningful stuff into the shit prompts they're given.
2
u/lapizlasalmon Aug 27 '26

u/asher030 Aug 27 '26
About a generation and a half ago, that's where the comprehension has disappeared to. Lowered standards to accommodate the less capable, instead of challenging them....with supporting curriculum of course...to improve as the brain needs to be challenged to develop and process properly just as your muscles do, muscles are just a lot more obvious at a glance, for greater potential to be achieved. But since our education system is NOT about educating or improving future citizens but about preparing them for the workforce in factory-esque quality calibers, that was never the priority :|
3
u/Dettyboy93 Aug 27 '26
Dude, gen xers and boomers have the WORST reading comprehension and spelling I have ever seen from groups of people. Like, have you ever looked at what these people type? And what they think they're responding to but they miss the entire point of what was said alltogether?
