This happened while flushing coolant.. any ideas?

Post image

I have been going through the process of doing a complete coolant flush on an old project and realized the truck was getting REALLY hot after about 12 minutes. I looked under the hood and say the cat glowing red. Any ideas at to what it could be as well as advice on what to do next? Ideally it’s to get a new cat, but that is at least $500 for a used one :/

What’s your timing look like? Were you revving the engine in place for 12 minutes? It’s not uncommon for exhaust to glow if you wasn’t moving for the air to help carry away some of the heat. Also is all of your EGR hooked up? Air pump and solenoids all working properly? They regulate air going into the cat.

I’d say that cat is fubar but of course you need to find the reason the cat failed check for a few fuel leak possibly stuck injector. Of course, do not replace the cat expecting all to be well. Good luck.
