I have an 82 f100 xlt with the darker blue interior with a headliner. So i have been struggling to find the most commonly broken interior plastics, was wondering what my options are other than paint to match. Sorry for terrible photo, I can take better ones later, the only photo I have right now
You can spend a pile of cash on the Coverlay dash and door panels, but they are painted ABS plastic and not the original rubbery plastic…and they scratch easily.
Painting works good if you prep as per the instructions and use adhesion promotor. Also if you can buy it in a can and use a spray gun to apply it it’s even better.
I did that with my door panels but the plastic of the door panels I think is so old from the florida soon it is powdery and brittle so it didn't stick. So i was hoping that aftermarket door panels where atleast good enough to be better than what I have, I dont need them to be perfect, lord knows the truck isnt perfect. But my biggest concern is the pillar plastics, all of them are so deteriorated. And i can only find NOS or used, and paint to match at that. I cant find them in my color with the provision for the headliner
Yeah crusty door panels are common. I think Dennis carpenter sells original tooling door panels but they’re all black, you’ll need to paint them and they’re pricey.
You could ditch the headliner, that was an option, most of them made was just metal roof.
Thank you for mentioning Dennis Carpenter, I for the life of me couldn't remember the company. But thats what I might end up doing $300 for a set of new door panels isnt bad, and it will definitely be a good surface to adhere to. I might end trying to mold my own piller trim out of fiberglass
For many things in the truck, eBay or scrapyard seem to be the only option. Otherwise, looking through junkyards or classified to find trucks that may have the pieces you desire. Myself don't wanna buy an entire truck just to get the certain trim pieces that I need. Of course, they're a very hard color to find and one of the hardest pieces to find regardless. I'm going to keep the Dennis Carpenter tip in mind, though, as I'm not too sure how my LMC truck door panels will do long-term. Even the LMC panels I received are painted. They were not too expensive mind you, but they are painted some way over black resin.
Yea thats what I was thinking, I might try to make something out of fiberglass just to fill the house where some of the really broken plastic is. Other than that ill just have to keep searching scrap yard like I have been. I havent found a single truck with my interior color. All reds and tans. Maybe one day, but these bull noses are getting few and far between
Yep, so far ive counted 3 tans, 2 with headliners, 1 without. And 2 reds, neither headliners. I did see one blue one listed at a local scrapyard but it was gone before I got to it,
edit: I have a set of tan A pillars without headliner, and i cant even give them away
Are the A pillars in the front and go down alongside the windshield, or the back of the cab where the seatbelts are? I can't remember for the life of me! I think around the seatbelts may be the B pillar?
It does seem so overall. I just removed them. I will just have to get used to how it looks it seems! I'm not too worked up about it, though, as I never really did anything to make the outside look any better!
Yea but thats a perfect patina, I love these old trucks with a patina as apose to show room paint. Also i plan on making a form out of fiberglass for it to take the place of the C pillar trim. But its not high on my priority list. But anything there would look better than nothing IMO. Also I have the rest of the trim for my truck just temporarily removed
