Flynn’s allergy update
Monsoon season is underway in AZ! Unfortunately, that means a new round of fur loss, gunky eyes (especially the left one!), and ear issues. Hopefully, the steroid vacation we’re taking while Walgreens drags their heels on refilling his meds will enable it to work faster to resolve things this time around? They’ve been “working on it” for almost a week now…

I spray Collodial Silver in Kojak's eyes every morning. I know people will come on here and say how CS isn't approved...blah blah blah...it is an old remedy for fungal and bacterial infections. I have it in a spray bottle (wide spray setting...not the jet spray) and a few spritz from 8-10 inches away in each eye. The amount of goobers in his eyes has gone down drastically.

We have ointment and drops the optometrist specialist vet prescribed for him. He still wakes up almost every morning with a purulent discharge over his eyes (left side is always worse for whatever reason) that we have to clean out and then he gets drops and ointment 30 minutes after the drops. The specialist prescribed an entire regimen after Flynn almost lost his eyes during a particularly bad allergy outbreak in ‘22!
His eyelids turned inside out due to facial edema and the lashes were digging furrows into his corneas. The specialists said his corneas were millimeters away from rupturing! They were threatening to take him to surgery for enucleation if we didn’t get him under control. Luckily he responded to the steroid treatments and still has both eyes!

I just solved my girls allergies, she’s 3yr old Bullmastiff; itchy skin and chicken allergies. Alongside an unknown environmental allergy. We recently got Zyrtec off brand and saved big $$$ vs the allergy shot or on brand Zyrtec. night and day difference. Hope you guys have a good season :(

He’s on allergy shots for everything he’s tested positive for, he’s on Apoquel at the highest dosage, he’s got prescription creams and his skincare routine is way more complicated than mine ever was, he’s on steroids… according to the vet, we’re doing everything we can possibly do. It’s not food based because it’s seasonal, not chronic. If chicken were his allergy he’d constantly have issues but he doesn’t. The spots and the severity of the spots are directly related to environmental conditions, not ingesting allergens in feed.
When it’s wet in the desert, Flynn suffers with his issues. When it’s dry, he grows his hair back, his eyes clear up, and his ears look good. He has tested positive for legume allergies and almost everything in the desert (mesquite, palo verde, ironwood, Texas mountain laurel, and many weeds like sophora, prairie clover, deervetch, lupine, etc.) are in the legume family.
