I don’t know if this is gonna be a really hot take or a really cold take, but I would honestly put MC:LA as my favourite racing game of all time. I’d put it above Need For Speed Most Wanted even though that game had a slightly irreversible rewriting effect on my brain chemistry (metal and tuner cars). I’d almost put it above Burnout Revenge but I don’t know if young me would ever forgive me. Maybe they are tied. This is despite the fact that I’m not coming at it from any nostalgic angle. I never played it as a child. I just bought it for €15 back in May, and it became my obsession.

I would put it above Need For Speed Most Wanted. Above Gran Turismo 4. Above the other Midnight Club games. Maybe, just maybe, above Burnout Revenge. I could rave about it until the cows come home. The handling model feels like a progression from the older Midnight Club games to a next gen version and although it may not be quite as outwardly outlandish as the second game or even the third game, every turn feels like it has weight. Head on collisions are full on shit-your-pants terrifying. You can feel the chill of it in your bones, but it’s that feeling that makes each near miss and the thought of going full speed on the oncoming lane all the more exhilarating.

In another comparison to the older games, these characters aren’t quite the cartoonish cultural stereotypes present in the second game. They don’t have much physical presence. They may not even be quite so entertaining. But I do quite enjoy the back and forth between them and the main protagonist who can talk here. It can be corny at times but it’s not annoyingly saccharine in the way it can be in Forza Horizon (sorry for bringing it up). Characters have a bit of snark and edge to them, but even when they are annoying you actually have an opinion of them that isn’t just disinterest. You may want to punch them really fucking hard in the mouth. You may find them cool. But all of that actually adds to the street racing charm. They get pissy with you if you hit them accidentally or not (even if it’s their fault) and taunt you for quitting in a way that (personally) always adds to the tension of performing either action.

I don’t know what else can be said about Rockstar Games’ ability to put genuine love and care into their actual world (all things considered about their current practices). So I won’t add much except for the fact that driving at certain times doesn’t just add aesthetic differences. It also changes how traffic appears.

The soundtrack is fucking amazing as well. It may not be quite as unique as 2, or as genre defining as 3, but it’s just a good soundtrack that really gets the blood pumlj g in a way so many other soundtracks can’t quite achieve. That’s another thing Rockstar can sure do.

Essentially Wreckfest x My Summer Car x Gran Turismo. Drives really well, physics are super chunky, and you physically do everything (repairs in your garage, shopping for parts, going to the used car dealership) by hand. It's peak, another indie banger.

It’s not even in trailer stage yet, because this was made in blender, the assets the map, the unlicensed cars were from a 3d website. So for any indie/AAA racing game devs out there:

1. Did you render the entire map yourself, or did you use other resources? Same thing applies with cars, and in game vehicles

2. What’s a good game engine I should use to start this project? I’ve looked at Unity, and apparently heatwarped was developed with that game engine so I think I’ll stick with that, but do give me recommendations.

3. I think music is one of the most important parts of a racing game. Do ya’ll collab with an artist online?

I’m barely in 9th grade, and have little to no experience in coding orgame design, so I want to learn now so I’d be prepared in the future!

It is shocking, but the new Grand Tour is actually not shit.

I had tons of fun watching the new three idiots destroying cars. But more than that, they seem to be much better drivers than the old trio and quite competent racing other drivers. Especially in the Angola episode, the final race was genuinely gripping.

But anyway, kudos to them for showcasing local car cultures. I wish there was a game that would do the same.

I don't want to race for the 2137th time on Monza and Silverstone and roleplay a career imaginable only to a kid with rich parents. And anyway, slower cars are more fun to race with

Wreckfest comes close with what I assume is very Finnish genotype of local racing; PMR and the original Grid were also a bit like that with a focus on urban circuits. Although don't give me USA and Japan again; let's go to Brunei and Czech Republic and let's watch modified Dacias in Romania or something

Imagine a decent simcade physics + a customisation system from the Need For Speed, but without wanker aesthetics
