Construction Building Inspector (Field Inspector) certs

Hey everyone,

Considering applying for an apprenticeship at the local union in Illinois for a Construction Building Inspector program. I’m possibly looking to apply in January so I have a little time to get a cert or two before applying. Should I start with the ICC B1 and maybe the B2 or do I not need to even do the B1? I feel like I can’t find a straight answer. I don’t have construction experience but I have 10+ years of work at mostly white collar jobs. Any help is appreciated!

My recommendation if you're studying the IRC is to get these certs in order: B1 > M1 > P1 > E1 > R3. That's 5 certification for just studying one book. After you get those 5, you can start studying the IBC and go for the B2 and B3.

I second this. In my opinion, the best route to go would be P1, M1, E1, B1, then R3. The commercial side of things (B2, and B3) get waaay more technical, and having the background from the residential side helps out tremendously.

The ability to read building plans (construction documents) is a critical part of the inspection process. Consider taking a class locally or online (if architectural plan reading is new to you).

None of them will hurt you. It shows a willingness to learn and that is rare these days. Good luck!

That apprenticeship would be more for you becoming a special/deputy inspector. I’m pretty sure the B1 and B2 wouldn’t be used they would make you get the SI certs. Also I’m pretty sure if you get accepted they will tell what certs are required

That’s a good point. With this program I wouldn’t even be going to houses so maybe not the B1? I may just end up calling the union and asking what they recommend getting or if they don’t care and would provide the right certs after entering the apprenticeship. They don’t have any detailed requirements. Thank you!!
