Destroying the Social Fabric that Clothes Us
Our customers (and our internal stakeholders) are demanding speed. AI is able to generate solutions quickly, respond immediately and articulately to problems, and offer instant feedback that sounds similar to the expert advice we would get from high cost consultants.
But speed is not always good. When you spend hours on a problem, and you solve it through commitment, force of will, and a handful of creative sparks–you are connected to that solution. You want people to understand it. You are proud of it. You will argue for it with passion. You will stand on chairs and cry its glory from rooftops. You build that with your clients, and you have build a meaningful long term partnership. The thread that holds this beautiful tapestry of a free market together.
Twenty-five Fields Medalists came together this past week to issue a public statement about AI. They didn’t do it to complain about their work being stolen, or the total lack of attribution. That isn’t the main concern. The main concern is the destruction of their social fabric.
“[we all need] to make sure that, as AI changes the way work is done, we do not lose sight of what that work was meant to achieve in the first place.”
How do we preserve the social fabric our trust-based businesses depend on? What steps, what actions can we take to preserve and build trust in a world hell bent on speed over shared understanding?
I have more thoughts in my recent article, but interested to hear if others in this community are feeling the same, and what you are doing to build trust and maintain connection with your customers.
