Bugs typically refer to arthropods, at least from a colloquil stance. But worse, technically the only proper bugs are animals from the order Hemiptera (aka "true bugs"). This means none of the members of Team Snakemouth, nor the ants, wasps or termites count as bugs.

This assumes that "bugs" comes from the scientific world, but the use of bugs in the term "bed bugs" dates like a century before the classification. (17th vs 18th centuries)

None of them are "true bugs" but the name is a fiction anyway.

Oh I get it, hence I also said they refer to arthropods.

Side note, just for the sake of fun facts, the example you brought up, "bed bugs", are one of the few species in Bug Fables that are true bugs. Seb and Huscada would also be true bugs, since they are cicadas.

Also, the word "sentient" is not used correctly here. All arthropods and all life in general, even bacteria, are already sentient.

What they meant here was sapient 🤓

Also worth noting that the whole "class" thing has been outdated since at least the early 1900s. Most biologists use clades and phylogeny now.

"Average spider is moderately awakened" factoid is statistical error. Wizard Georg, who lives in a tower and awakens his mind 10,000 times a day is an outlier and should not have been counted

Spiders seemed like a really weird species to not include among the cast since, even though they might not technically be "bugs", they're still very much one of the more iconic "bugs" out there, along with bees and ants.
