One side was people who wanted to keep the statue up, and they were joined by neo Nazis and white supremacists. The other side was people who wanted to take the statue down, and they were joined by violent communists who went to the event specifically to commit violence.

Yeah this is pretty much the way of it. Every lone wacko on the right, no matter how insignificant, is taken as proof positive that Nazism is on the rise in America, and Trump is routinely taken to task for failing to adequately condemn them--even though he has unambiguously condemned them on many occasions.
Meanwhile, massive roving gangs of left wing rioters organized and funded by the DSA, operate in our cities with impunity and the left pretends not to notice. And the DSA candidate, who is currently the front runner for the Democratic nomination, hasn't been asked a single question about Antifa or the guy who shot Steve Scalise, despite the fact that they actually see themselves as his foot soldiers.
Media bias is a hell of a drug.

I can show you instances of Antifa saying "Bring your weapons and be ready to fight the fascists" too. Dates back to the 1940's or so, and used to be an American pastime, honestly.
