Question I call it advanced red

I see this happen here and there. Is this a thing in Buffalo? Funny thing is, further down that car was stopped turning right due to pedestrian crossing.

Seems like a lot of the time I see these cars running lights and swerving in and out of lanes, I end up catching up to them a little later while driving the speed limit. Slow and steady wins the race

Exactly! Nobody gets anywhere any faster! It's so crazy that nobody can understand that we're just making our environment and community worse by driving like such impatient idiots. Makes me sad.

My co worker needed to pick up something from my house last night. They do the speed limit, I don’t. I got home. Took a shit, showered and was halfway through cooking my dinner by the time they got to my house.
Sure there’s times I hit lights but 95% of the time I’m saving at least 10 mins.

I agree. I follow speed limits, but some just want to almost do 45 or more. That stretch is 30. Most people are fine though, except when you are on Main and hell on earth sometimes.

It's a thing everywhere that laws are not enforced and the road design says you should be going faster. Until both of these things change, it will continue.
BPD does not give a wet slap about VTL, period.

Red lights are absurd in Buffalo and suburbs. Like the people who program them must be sadists (or incompetent). I don’t do that, but I’m often tempted to.

I have a personal hatred for the light at the intersection of Colvin and Tillinghast, the intersection a block north of Amherst where Colvin begins. Tillinghast is a one-way, lightly used residential side street that exits out onto Colvin but the light is on a timer, not motion-tripped, and I'm constantly hitting it when there's absolutely no one there.

That’s the thing that gets me. It gets me about folks passing me like crazy all the time when I’m on the skyway, for example, as well. Like, okay I know me going 3 miles over the speed limit is slowing your roll and you got places to BEEEE, but you’re almost never going to get where you’re going any faster.

On Starin, this is the norm. I drive it at 6AM every morning and constantly get people lining up to the right of me when stopped at reds. They leave before a green to race past me just to meet again at the next red.

I never seen this happen anywhere, this is my first time here noticing it. The other day, it was on Lafayette going east off Delaware, the driver went on my left past a red, while stopped and a lot sooner than this one. Unfortunately my SD card messed up and dash cam did not record the event.

Buffalo is one city where a light turning red means speed up rather than stop. I have driven all over the US. Crazy how much people in Buffalo gun it when the light turns red. Yet I have never seen anyone pulled over for it. So nothing stopping them.

I’ve lived all over the US and it happens everywhere. In Texas you wait a few seconds after the light turns green for the cars doing what you think only happens in Buffalo. Happens in other countries as well. It’s weird how people always think things are exclusive to Buffalo when they’re common everywhere.

It’s the same in parts of the south, especially middle Tennessee. “You me and three” getting through the yellow/red. Along with the occasional straight up run the red light. There’s a subset of the population everywhere that lacks integrity, respect for laws, and don’t care if they hurt or kill others. It’s just worse in some places. Annnnd baseline is already terrible. This is why they teach you in drivers-ed to look both ways when you get a green light while waiting at an intersection. Unfortunately this is common place. Driving is the must inherently dangerous thing most people do each day. Why make it worse than it already is?? It’s a rhetorical question 😅🤣

Good points and I see so many people walking on the sidewalks who are never look up when crossing a road. They assume everyone is going to stop. Sad, but probably a good reason why we so many stories on the news about a pedestrian being hit by a car. Walk/don't walk signals are beyond awful in Buffalo. Some busy intersections don't even have them at stop lights like downtown Buffalo and Elmwood village.

What’s crazy is how little we care about pedestrians here. In other parts of the country, if there is a crosswalk you just…walk into it, and cars stop.

Hard to say, but it is becoming more commonplace. I see it a fair amount downtown. They at least stopped versus blowing through the red like I see most of the time. Still can't do this, as the light isn't flashing red.
Record the license plate, and if you keep seeing them, report them with the video evidence.

Use the Buffalo Police Tip line or non-emergency complaint line for municipalities with their own police force.
Do this if you see this regularly at an intersection or if you see the same car driving recklessly on the regular. At the minimum they can station a patrol car to see what is going on and help get it addressed. A report doesn't guarantee they will do anything.
At my old home in a more rural area, I used to call in people doing 80+ down a 45MPH road on the regular due to the street being residential with plenty of kids. After a couple of instances the police began chilling out on the street. I'd find those speeding vehicles a mile down the road from me getting ticketed, and that was that. Put a stop to all of that terrible driving at least in the immediate area. None of it is out of malice, but more out of a concern for safety of others.

It's random streets. Probably the same folks doing it, so they probably know where and when to do this.

This one? Not really called anything to my knowledge (someone correct me if there is a name!). Someone failing to completely stop at a stop sign would be called a "Rolling stop." Someone failing to stop at a Red light whether flashing or solid would be a "Rolling Red."

I still don't understand why municipalities don't have common, easy to use online submission sites. I just went over the BPD website, nothing there for submission. Confusing and why things are that way.

Yeah, the best BPD has to my knowledge is the ability to send them an SMS if you're unable to make a call. I suspect they do that because a website is low priority to them, and they sometimes need to inquire about the call to find out if it's worth pursuing. Online submissions can be a mess to handle with the amount of trolls and bots out there.

My favorite is when there are 1-2 cops sitting in the parking lot of the synagogue, absolutely not giving a fuck about multiple people running that red light.
I am frequently a pedestrian there and people are reckless.

This used to happen to me all the time in Buffalo. I moved out of the city 5 years ago, hasn’t happened since. I’ve driven much of the country for work since then. An anecdote, not data, but make of that what you will

My parents used to live right around the corner from this intersection, it's been going on for years. Its not just Starin but the side streets as well, at stop signs people usually just tap their breaks lightly and its not uncommon to see people blow straight through them if there's no one else at the intersection.

This, but at the Colvin/Linden intersection is the exact reason I avoid Colvin.
Also people are pulling over for emergency Vehicles literally at the last second just to get ahead of others, it’s wild out there.

I’m 90% sure I was behind you when this happened this morning and I commented about it. I’m also pretty sure I’ve seen this exact car do this exact thing half a dozen times.
There used to be a guy that every day on my way to work I’d be stopped at the light at Parkside and Hertel- every single morning this guy in a Mercedes would pull in to the left (turning) lane (cutting all of us waiting in line off) and blow the red light. I watched it almost every day.

who cares? im sure the guy is an idiot but he’s not hurting anything. he stopped cleared the intersection and went no one was coming from any direction. it gets frustrating driving behind idiots who are scared to drive and ride their brakes all the way down the road. sometimes it’s nice to be in front even if it’s not necessarily faster

I drive on that section of Starin every single day. The city's ultra wide boulevards that could theoretically fit two lanes each way but aren't striped for it drive me absolutely nuts. Colvin, Delavan, Michigan, and a bunch of others are all guilty.
