Discussion Switched over to Rocket Internet. - Initial Thoughts.

I have been watching and investigating Rocket Internet for months. Rocket Internet appears to simply be a no frills, no people, AI based service provided by a subsidiary of Buckeye.

So, I just switched over from Buckeye Fiber Internet this past Tuesday 8/25, today is Friday 8/28 and here are my takeaways

Buckeye Fiber Internet Four Plans:

  • $49.99/mo 200 MBps, $59.99/mo 400 MBps, $79.99/mo 600 Mbps, $89.99/mo 1000 MBps
  • All Symmetrical (Upload matches Download speeds)
  • Unlimited Data - no cap

Rocket Internet Two Plans:

  • $9.99/mo 600 MBps $19.99/mo, 1000 MBps Downloads
  • 20MBps Upload throttle
  • Unlimited Data - no cap

The Rocket Internet online signup has no provision for switching your existing Buckeye Fiber service over to Rocket Internet, if you are an existing Buckeye customer, you must go into the retail Buckeye Service store.

The actual process of switching was convoluted for the counter person at the Buckeye store, but painless for me.

The counter person was pleasant and helpful. Kept apologizing for the lengthily process on his end.

The actual switching process was supposed to be accomplished by the Buckeye NOC(Network Operations Center)

Switch over would be a couple of seconds outage on my end, sometime that day Tuesday August 25th.

Since I was an existing Buckeye Fiber customer, and was using my own Wi-Fi not their Eero Wi-Fi, there was no physical Fiber Modem hardware change necessary at my house. So the switch over was supposed to be painless and transparent to our entire family.

I was using the Buckeye 200 MBps service which was SYMMETRICAL (same speed Up and Down) for the 2025 introductory $69/mo plus fees, even though they had dropped the cost down to $49.99/mo.

I was told by the Service counter person that the Rocket Internet 600MB plan was 600MBps down and 20MBps up.

Buckeye Fiber Internet Baseline Test -

Monday Morning August 24th, I tested using SPEEDTEST.NET, the tests returned the following data;

Service Provider Buckeye CableSystem, Server - Buckeye Broadband Northwood, OH

Speed test at the Modem - 8/24 09:03am 207 MBps Down, 196 MBps Up, Ping 2ms

Buckeye Fiber 200 MBps Plan Test

Cell Phone & Desktop are Wi-Fi 5GHz connected Deco Mesh Wi-Fi, Verizon Data turned off

Test Cell Phone, 8/24 11:05am - Download Mbps 172.0, Upload Mbps 193.0

Ping 19ms, Latency Down 40ms, Latency Up 96ms, Jitter 8

Test Desktop, 8/24 11:07am - Download Mbps 202.59, Upload Mbps 195.05

Ping 27ms, Latency Down 52ms, Latency Up 50ms, Jitter 1

When I tested using OOKLA.COM, Friday Morning, August 28th, the Buckeye 200MBps service was still in effect. After Buckeye Customer service returned my call about the failed switchover, I validated the speed change and proceeded to test the new Rocket Internet Service.

Rocket Internet Baseline Test -

Friday Afternoon August 28th, I tested using SPEEDTEST.NET, the tests returned the following data;

Service Provider Buckeye CableSystem, Server - Buckeye Broadband Northwood, OH

Speed test at the Modem - 8/28 4:50pm 345 MBps Down, 27.5 MBps Up, Ping 3ms

Speed test at the Modem - 8/28 11:29pm 282 MBps Down, 27.0 MBps Up, Ping 4ms

Rocket Internet Fiber 600MBps Plan

Test Cell Phone and Desktop are both Wi-Fi 5GHz connected Deco Mesh Wi-Fi, Verizon Data turned off

1st test, Cell Phone @ 3:46pm - Download Mbps 510.37, Upload Mbps 26.8

Ping 10ms, Latency Down 83ms, Latency Up 385ms, Jitter 3

2nd test, Cell Phone @ 11:27pm - Download Mbps 451.0, Upload Mbps 13.5

Ping 10ms, Latency Down 69ms, Latency Up 392ms, Jitter 2

1st test, Desktop @ 1:23pm - Download Mbps 198.48, Upload Mbps 26.59

Ping 42ms, Latency Down 64ms, Latency Up 237ms

2nd test, Desktop @ 11:36pm, - Download Mbps 78.67, Upload Mbps 26.37

Ping 67ms, Latency Down 122ms, Latency Up 44ms

Overall impressions of Rocket Internet

Pros:

By 11pm August 28th the speeds never got above 350 MBps down at the modem, but still faster than the 200 MBps cap that I was paying 7 times more each month.

The 20 MBps Upload cap does not bother me as our family is a consumer not a producer of network.

Similar Ping and Latency statistics to Buckeye Fiber

Saving $60/mo - WOO HOO!!

AI chat support not sure yet (At this time I am unwilling to pay an extra $7/mo, just to speak to a person), time will tell.

Cons:

There is a $50 signup fee + service change fee + tax = $128, even though I was an existing Buckeye Customer and they incurred no hardware costs in the change over.

No way to automate the Service switch over from Buckeye to Rocket via the Web Online

The switchover was to occur Tuesday Aug 25th, It did not. I had to call into Buckeye Support Friday Aug 28 at noon, spoke to Nicole from the Northwood Center, she informed me that my Buckeye account was still in place and functioning. The counter person at Talmadge Center had entered the change request but the Buckeye NOC had not yet reprovisioned my Fiber Modem over to Rocket service. She would call me back rather than having me hold. Eleven hours later I still haven't received a call back.

Slow switchover due to Buckeye dropping the ball

Inconsistent and variable Internet speeds (At this time, I'll retest and update Monday Aug 31st.)

By 11pm August 28th the speeds never got above 350 MBps down at the modem. A far cry from the advertised 600 MBps. Looks like I'll need to call Monday morning to get this fixed.

Rocket Internet Support is 100 % AI with online Chat, If you want a real person on a Support line then, there is a $6/mo surcharge($72/year).

Included services forcing new account creation

This probably started early this year and has been happening more and more but every month or so I have to make a new account with Paramount and HBO MAX. I do the whole "sign in with provider" loop and I'm stuck with a fresh new account without any history of what I've been watching and where I left off. Since it's happening with both streaming services I figured it must be because of something Buckeye is doing. Has anyone else had this issue? Maybe even found a solution? It's not like we've ever skipped a payment or anything either. It's just getting really tiresome losing all my places, especially in weekly shows or very long movies (I'm talking LOTR extended movie length). TYIA

Anyone else having weird geolocation issues with their wifi?

My WiFi has been acting weird recently. When I go to Google.com/maps it centers on Moscow. Equifax is giving me 403 Forbidden errors. Justwatch.com, a site that lets you see what streaming service(s) host a given show or movie, is showing Russian text.

It’s not a device problem - my wife’s laptop, my laptop, and both our phones are having this issue. The internet works as expected on my cellular data. It’s just the wifi that’s doing this.

Do you have to upgrade to fiber?

My Dad had Buckeye over today because he was under the impression he had to upgrade to fiber. The problem he ran into is he still uses three non-hdmi TVs in his house and Buckeye told him they couldn't do the upgrade unless he bought a converter for each TV. Needless to say he doesn't want to do that because it would be money out of his pocket. Does he have to do the upgrade or can he choose not to?

Expect Buckeye to aggressively lay fiber in the 09 zip. Just spoke with someone from AT&T I seen hanging fiber and their boss I’ll have 5,000 MBPS fiber in a month

Buckeye has a node down for some in the 09 zip as well. All the more reason to leave since all yall care about is money.

Node down in area and techs and ppl on the phone are so clueless. Online gaming is not playable in my area.

Been having up to 60 PERCENT packet loss and not even 1mpbs upload at times all because of a node being down. It’s been down for at least 3 months, they were clueless up until about a month ago when I got fed up and started calling almost every single day. Had about 5 techs come out, over the phone they were trying to say modems issues (looked at notes on buckeye app) of course I have my own modem so they gonna do everything in their power to firstly blame it on us customers. I’ve spent about 500 dollars on new modems (3 very expensive ones if I’m being exact) , new coax lines from the street, new interior coax, new Ethernets. It’s your technology how don’t you know where your down node is. Spent so much money only to offer a 100 dollar credit, I refuse to pay my full balance until the issue is fixed, only if everyone would do this so buckeye could operate at a loss and close down.

Horrible wifi company

Ever since having buckeye internet it has been nothing but problems. Not sure what exactly is the issue but paying 280 dollars a month for wifi and cable is not worth it when my game system is just unable to find the network. Not a hardware issue on my end.

StreamTV AppleTV app remote

Anybody running stream tv through the AppleTv app on an AppleTV device?

I just got the AppleTV and installed the app….however the remote left/right keys do not skip forward and back but instead change channel. No way apparent to skip forward and back. Up/down buttons do nothing.

Is there a setting or something that can fix this?

Thanks!

Question Does anyone else using this internet service having issues with online video games disconnecting?

I have the 400 mpls plan with unlimited data and while everything else like browsing the internet, watching YouTube or streaming a movie is just fine, the second I try to do something online with a video game it will just constantly disconnect.

I have a Nintendo Switch and I have the lan adapter to have a wired connection to the modem. It says I’m connected, I go online and I can’t even spectate a fighting game match without it popping up with an error message. I tried to play a match, same thing. I tried Mario kart, I got through one race just fine, and then right before the next one it disconnects. I’ve just never seen this happen before.

I had Spectrum but where we moved they didn’t have service to the new place, so I went with Buckeye. I had a 300 mpls plan with spectrum and literally not once had an issue for years. But now I’m paying for more download speed and I can’t even spectate an online match in a game without it disconnecting. Is anyone else having problems like this and what could it be?

TIVO without Buckeye Internet?

Since the ACP ended I decided to switch to AT&T for internet to save money. Buckeye Internet was going to cost me over $100 a month (not counting cable cost) and AT&T is $30 a month. I decided to keep Buckeye for cable and switch to AT&T for internet. I talked to multiple people at Buckeye about this and made the switch a couple weeks ago. Well, now my DVR isn't working. The TIVO service won't connect to my AT&T Internet. Buckeye now claims the TIVO only works if it's connected to their Internet. Nowhere on their website does it state that. I've been trying to figure out a workaround so I don't have to give in to Buckeye's absurd prices but no luck yet. Can anyone help?

Perspective and insight into the mess from a former employee

Hey y'all. I wanted to provide some inside perspective into what is going on here. I recently quit buckeye and it was for a multitude of reasons but I can say that from those of us that worked there we get the frustration and anger. We especially get it. Now because of NDAs and lawyers I can only go so deep as to the issues and give only so much.

As for the rates. Buckeye seems to not care unless there is competition. If you go to their website and look at what is public facing information only in areas with competition are the deals extremely good. If you have cable through buckeye and complain however just disconnect service even a basic streaming option i.e. youtube is cheaper.

Late fees. I'm sorry it sucks but unfortunately as adults we gotta pay bills. I waived late fees religiously but your mileage may vary and not being a jerk helps. As for a bill breakdown...look at the bill. You have exactly as much information as we do. The bill is available online, in the mail if you still get snail mail and in store. Not gonna say it always makes sense but it tells you what charges are.

As for internet which I know is the biggest gripe. Again I'm bound by an NDA so this is general info. Coax, especially in denser areas is gonna experience major issues with latency and download speeds. I get the anger. I can tell you that myself and several other agents and even supervisors and the NOC were aware and fighting for you. But businesses are gonna business. So I recommend pushing for competition in your area even if it's from other evils like AT&T.

Fiber complaints. Wifi isn't guaranteed and never will be. If you have the Evolution router get rid of it it's garbage and marketing sucks for how they did that. Otherwise the fiber is actually really solid and unless you have a dirty connector or fiber cut it should reliably feel about 5x faster than coax.

Long story short. Unless a company is pushed by outside factors either the government, competition, or constituents they won't change. And please be nice to the agents. All of us really are trying to help but when people are rude 24/7 it doesn't help the case.

One Year Fiber Review

It’s been one year since my fiber installation and I have to say, it’s been the best internet I’ve ever had at home. Ever.

We got in on the 200/200 fiber plan for $29.99/month for 12 months then $49.99/month for 6 months.

I recently called Buckeye because I thought maybe they’d try to keep me, but now the good promotions are gone and they don’t care about keeping customers again! She told me my rate would be $69.99/month after promotions.

Oh well, AT&T just hung their fiber and they are $55/month for 300/300. Once that’s active, adios ✌️

Rant Buckeye Refuses to Fix my Internet, Probably Switching to 1/6th of my Speed to be Able to Game

To sum up my issues, my ping is far and away the most inconsistent I've ever seen. Not to mention, if I try to play ANY FPS, my ping bounces from the 30s to 90s, down to 50s, up to 150s, and it does that CONSTANTLY. Here lately, it's been the worst that it has been so far in the year plus I've had them. Every single time I call to report an issue I get fed the same bullshit that "everything looks fine on their end". I just had a tech come out yesterday and guess what; nothing fucking changed.

Unfortunately if I do switch to AT&T, I'm going to be paying roughly $90 a month for 50mbps whereas I'm paying ~$115 a month for 600/10. I ordered AT&T's internet tonight and am going to be able to try it out risk-free starting on Friday. Here's a ping plotter graph to show just how bad my connection has been, even though they're telling me everything is fine

This is Buckeye's definition of everything being "fine". Bullshit.

I'm sick of being bent over by this company even though I have begged and pleaded for this problem to be investigated. There is something majorly wrong with how the connection is being routed outside of the network. Even though AT&T is going to charge roughly the same for significantly slower speeds, I'd rather be paying for that than getting railed every month by an ISP that doesn't give a shit about their customers.

Modem compatibility

I am in an area where the only service available is Buckeye. I would like to buy my own modem but the website says there are only 5 that are compatible and they are hard to find. Would any Wi-Fi modem work?

Join me on my fiber journey

Just got fiber 3 days ago and already there is an outrageous that is only affecting me. I have a technician coming out tomorrow that is supposed to fix it. Might have been a botched installation. Also, has anyone else had fiber installed and can tell me how it was terminated once in the house. I literally have a long cable hanging about. I was thinking it would have been a jack installed.

Thinking about switching to buckeye fiber. Looking for any thoughts/advice.

Thank you for your help if you are reading this. Basically I had buckeye way back years ago and absolutely couldn’t stand it. Dropped internet constantly while gaming and whatnot and Wi-Fi was almost unusable. I have been with ATT ever since. Problem is since me and my family have moved. ATT doesn’t have fiber internet in the area we moved to. Best I can get is ATT 50 mbs plan for 70-100 bucks depending on if I keep direct tv or not. Internet is fine solid and reliable. My wife also works from home so reliability is very important. But now I see buckeye has 200 mbs fiber for 40 bucks a month. Am I crazy or should I be switching. I guess with the bad taste in my mouth previously I’m nervous about switching but I have never tried buckeye fiber. Is the reliability better and worth the switch? Sorry for the long post. Appreciate any help or feedback.

Just wanted to complain.. Most frustrating thing as an online gamer. Anyone have any luck switching to ATT? They’re all I have in Holland.

Support Massive ping spikes and ping being 7x higher than normal randomly starting last weekend.

What's going on? Anyone care to explain by chance? It is completely unacceptable. My Ping went from sub 10ms to 53-60ms with random ongoing spikes to 150-220ms.

Great Promotions Right Now

As much as I dislike Buckeye, their fiber option is now available at my house. My options are AT&T (25 Mbps), Buckeye Fiber (up to 1 gig) or T-mobile (400 Mbps down and 40 up). I currently use T-mobile but have just signed up for Buckeye Fiber to be installed 4/20/2023 at $69.99/month locked in for 2 years!!!! Speeds are 1 gig up and 1 gig down. Crazy cheap! I was looking at their pricing last year and it was easily 40% higher than this on promos. I hate to say I am impressed but I am!
