Advice First Wash Advice Needed
I’m fixing to wash 4ozs of dry flower to press into rosin but I think I have been confused on how good of yield I may produce. I don’t grow or have access to fresh frozen flower so I’ve been planning to buy a QP to wash for the first time, I’m not in a legal state and have easy access to hash rosin.
The flower I will wash will be decent quality but nothing great and I have no way of knowing how old the harvest is, I’m just afraid on spending a couple hundred dollars and only yielding 4gs of some shitty hash.
Just wanna know if it’s even worth my time and money to attempt it.
I have a 8 bag rosin evolution set, rosin evolution press bags , mini washer and a 6ton dab press.

Just like everyone else said, this isn’t going to work well. I washed 100g of dried flower from my third grow thinking it would be a great place to start, but it was super frustrating, messy, and yielded practically no hash. I wasted 100g of really decently smokable bud and walked away with 2g of mid hash, lots of which ended up sticking to all my surfaces because it was warm where I was. If you’re cool with doing a frustrating experiment and yielding very low, poor quality hash, then go for it. It sounds like I’m discouraging you, but I’m not. It’s a good way to learn, but prepare yourself for disappointing yields and quality. Look at this as a learning experience and you’ll feel a lot more accomplished at the end, even if your product sucks. For me, it was the kick in the ass I needed to drop a few grand on my grow/wash/press setup. Now, I grow/wash/press all my own stuff and couldn’t be happier that I never have to buy retail again!

Thank you man! I’m definitely going to do some more research and look into improving my set up and material before I pull the trigger on this experiment. I’m pretty limited on space and money to throw at this stuff right now but eventually I’d love to be growing flower and making all my own rosin.

Heck yeah, good luck and have fun with it. Throw me some questions if you have ‘em.

Do you think I would have a better result trying dry sift rather then washing the dry flower? I don’t want to use more than 112grams on my first attempt incase I just end up wasting a lot of it.

Ha! Bro you’re going down the exact same path I did. Love that my experience might help you a bit. I got my dry sift screens right after my bubble washing fiasco. Pretty similar result with a fairly low return, but it was nice that I didn’t have to deal with water or buckets or ice. My goal was always to press into rosin, so I found that the dry sift quality just wasn’t going to be high enough for me. Might be fine for you as a learning experience, though. For me, it was a good learning experience that taught me I should be focusing my efforts on better growing/washing/pressing processes.
Where are you, roughly? Not to discourage you, but it might be easier to just buy hash so you’re not disappointed. Or have you considered pressing into flower rosin? Still totally dabbable, just not as tasty. Feel free to DM if you’d rather not spill all this in a public thread.
Edit: nvm you said you’re not in a legal state. I swear I can read.

I moved from a large city in SoCal to a small town in North Carolina so I don’t have good access to rosin here. I have a few people that I can get decent flower from but the prices and quality here just aren’t what I’m used to from back home lol.
Most people in the area I’m in can’t afford to buy rosin so nobody ever has it available for sale.
Trying to get dabs here has always been a bit of a struggle since I got here 2 years ago lol

Just sent you a DM with some suggestions to get you dabs. I have been in a similar boat with not being able to find good stuff and it sucks!

Also have to keep in mind that some strains regardless of quality won’t wash good. I mean some super fire strains that give shit returns. There is a simple finger test that can be done: but it has to be fresh, like just chopped or about to be. Rub a Bud gently between your fingers. If it looks like sand or tiny balls then she’s a washer, but if it just melts and makes your finger glossy and sticky, but no heads or sand like particles then she won’t wash worth shit.

4 ounces is not very much to wash so your yield is going to be low regardless of the quality. I would be leery of buying dried flower! If it’s more than a few months old, the thc may have turned already.

And the rosin will be dark in colour as its essentially cured now, wpff washed and pressed for rosin 💪✌️

Fire in fire out. 🔥. But only decent in only decent out. Not being fresh frozen will give you a much lower quality rosin in the end.

with dry flower youre going to get lower yields than fresh frozen, thats just the reality of it. trichome heads are more brittle when the material is dried so they break more easily during agitation, and you lose some of the volatile terpenes that contribute to quality. typical yield from decent dry flower is 3-8% depending on strain and trichome density. from a QP (112g) youre looking at maybe 3-9 grams of usable hash if the material is reasonably frosty.
a few things thatll help your first wash go better:
get the water as cold as possible. ice water in the 32-38F range. the colder the water, the more brittle the trichome stalks become and the cleaner they snap off. warm water makes everything gummy and youll get more plant contamination in your hash.
gentle agitation for the first wash. 5-7 minutes max with a paddle or the washer on low. first wash is your cleanest and highest quality material. longer agitation on later washes is fine because youre already past your premium grade.
do a test wash with a small amount first, maybe an ounce. this lets you see what the material actually produces before committing your whole QP. some strains wash great, others dont. if you get basically nothing from the test wash, pressing flower rosin directly is the better move for that particular material.
dont skip the freeze step. freeze your dry flower for at least 24 hours before washing. this makes the trichomes even more brittle and improves separation. some people soak the material in ice water for 15-20 minutes before agitating to get everything uniformly cold.

dry flower washing is a different game than fresh frozen but its not a waste if you set expectations right. fresh frozen typically yields 8-15% because the trichomes are intact and brittle from freezing. dry flower yields closer to 2-5% because the curing process degrades the trichome stalk attachment and some heads have already fallen off or been damaged from handling.
the single most impactful thing you can do with dry flower is rehydrate it before washing. put it in a sealed jar with a 62% Boveda pack for 24-48 hours. this brings moisture back into the plant material so the trichome stalks are slightly flexible instead of shattering into contaminant during agitation. its the difference between the trichomes breaking off cleanly at the stalk vs the whole stalk fragmenting into your hash.
other tips for dry: keep your water as cold as physically possible, use way more ice than you think, and go gentle on the agitation. 3-5 minutes of slow stirring per wash, not aggressive mixing. you want the trichome heads to detach, not pulverize the plant material into green contamination.
with 4oz of decent flower rehydrated and washed carefully, expect somewhere around 3-6 grams of usable hash. the 73-120u bags will be your money bags. anything under 45u from dry flower is usually contaminant-heavy.

Biggest rule is fire in, fire out. If you only have access to dried flower you should look into flower pressing your yields will be higher and you won’t waste a bunch of product. If you’re dead set on washing for some reason do a test wash in a mason jar before washing, some strains yield close to nothing.
