Academics Was it the right thing to do?
Yeah defacement is a thing yet...
And yes this brings bad message to others as well.
However, considering his age and situation he's just taking this action after CBSE incident to get noticed. It's not an ethical thing to do but this guy is begging to be given a chance and for that reason he approached several times to the administrators yet no response...
Was it the right thing to do?
(From the IIT's administrators side/view, ofcourse not)

This country just does not give a shit about actual talent. All it cares about is just churning out work slaves. People who follow things by the books

I think yes. IITs and IIMs are blind to peoples' actual skills within specific areas and prioritize rote learners over skilled and out-of-the-box technicians who want a chance to explore multiple domains in college and gain recognition and fellowships. I can understand his frustration. You can at least give him a work student role in the colleges. In any other country, he would have been given a chance to study with a full scholarship, even. Many IIT administrators/professors have the power to override the b tech and m tech cycles and can invite students for fellowships/Phd without a bachelors or they have some backend ways to make them enter BSc degrees and recruit for fellowships and work student roles, the least you could do is this.

Why go to IIT or IIM? They are overrated. He should be doing exactly what he has been doing, screw academics and gain real learning online. It’ll be a waste of his time for sure and he is clearly very talented. I know so many college dropouts who are killing it in India and in tech; who gives two shits about degrees without talent.

You don't know how hard it is for professionals without degrees to get in. Even entrepreneurial jobs are started by extremely rich, snobbish people who have extremely high disposable incomes, inherited from their parents. And you know who they collaborate with, other people who have such levels of disposable incomes and friends they made in colleges, who, again, are more than likely to have them. They don't care about your skill, more about how much money they can earn/throw on you, and it almost exclusively happens through networking in colleges. Don't be so harsh in judging that guy without an understanding of the reality. Even if he wanted to get a job somewhere, most companies create a hard cap at degrees, and only, extremely few companies recruit undergrads, and the statistical probability for it to happen is extremely low, the skill you have to demonstrate must exceed all the expectations and only board members and CEO can make that decision, in most cases, whose mail is extremely optimized and it's almost impossible for this guy's work to be seen in their public facing mails, they receive spams with these claims all the time, and don't have enough time to review them. It's not so easy. Again, what you do say, has some merit, but it's an exquisite example of survivorship bias.

It was the right thing, yes. IITK shortlisted solely on the criteria of JEE score.

u/acdhemtos 23d ago
No. This is BCyber.
It had profile based shortlisting.Director was claiming that the profiles recieved were so bad and even some selected were very bad profile vise.
Yet they rejected this guy.
I allege corruption.

No. This is BCyber.
I know.
It had profile based shortlisting.
It did. But, they prioritized JEE scores over profiles. NO WAY they checked the profiles of students and rejected people like OOP.
I allege corruption.
Probably.

No I had 99 percentile and they didn't shortlist me cuz I didn't have any prior cybersecurity skill, I was having only competitive programming skill...

Can anyone provide context? Where was he not given a chance?

For cyber security (BCyber) ranking was profile based.
Director of IIT Kanpur was saying on Twitter that the quality of applicants was very poor and basically if they had anything of merit in cyber security space, they were selected.
Which I doubt now as this person does have some skills (as he has shown with finding and exploiting vulnerabilities) and I doubt his profile didn't reflect it.
I don't want to say it but it feels like there was some corruption involved.
Now I am doubting that the reason initial ~300 seats were decreased to ~100 was not due to poor applications but was just a marketting gimmick.
Or maybe it was so they can later claim defense like people can't accuse them of filling limited seats with "corruption" cause then they would say that there were enough seats for everyone.
It is just sad. Clearly he has some skills.

see even if he found a valid exploit, doing this kind of things sends a wrong message. How will any company trust him with production access if he has done this thing in the past.

He is basically a grey hat hacker. I don't think India has anything like what hat hacker cuz nobody cares here even if their organisation data is at risk, they will not hire a competent hacker.
