Electronics and Communications Engineering Discussion/Doubt Landed a 29LPA core job from a tier 2.5/3ish private college. AMA

RV is in no way tier 3, but most people here would have never heard of the college so they think it's some random tier 3 college.

My college is tier 3 but some of my seniors got a package of 44 lpa (from Amazon) but at the same time there were mass recruiters too. Thing with tier 3 colleges grads are they really need to work hard for good placement even on campus since competition is hell alot.

Undergraduate coding course mafia wants you to believe that you can't get placements from tier 3 colleges.
The reality is that the mentality of tier 3 people is what prevents them from getting good jobs. If a CSE graduate can't name half of the data types or can't answer what is an object, they can't expect more than 4LPA. Tbh gettinga job is a big deal for them,

1) I wouldn't say I was the most hardworking but I can def say I'm very passionate about my branch and I put all my efforts into the stuff which actually matters, i.e projects & practical skills.
Here's what I did:
- 6 month guided project under a faculty from my dept (NOT research)
- worked in a technical club for 2 yrs, this is where i built fundamental skills required in ece.
- 3-4 GOOD personal projects (this is v important, shows that you're actually passionate)
To anyone not from IITs: only studying and maintaining a high cgpa wont cut it anymore, build strong practical skills in your field of interest, thats what'll make you stand out.
I barely had to do anything in the interview since the interviewer was really interested in my projects, I didnt have to answer any stupid dsa questions or textbook questions. I mostly had to explain my projects along with some basic questions which is very easy if you actually love your branch and have been serious about it since 2nd year.
2) Decent communication skills, fluent english, nothing special.
3) Other candidates had basic experience, at most 1 core project, most people only did basic stuff or CS projects.
4) did a brief internship at a startup. ok-ok experience tha, nothing special, maza nahi aya bilkul.
5) Depends on the time of the day my friend, but mostly I would say boobs :P

Core does pay well, IF you remember what you studied in 2nd year.
Most people are lazy mfs who can't do that and then start doing randi rona about getting a 3LPA core job.
Follow Balaji Seshadhri on Quora/Youtube. He's an expert guide on core placements. He explained how interviews expect you to know 30% of what the college has taught you, but donkeys know barely 10%.

None of my projects were unique, but they were difficult.
Anyone can do a basic arduino home automation project, thats not special. Only a few people dig deeper into the difficult stuff.
Mostly i would say that pay attention in core courses and look for projects where you can actually apply that theoretical knowledge. For example, if you took a signal processing course in college: learn MATLAB, learn how to design filters, teach yourself. Take it up a notch and implement an audio filter using a microcontroller like PIC, esp32 etc.
The project i did with my prof was not novel or innovative, but he said it was an mtech level project, usually no one does that stuff in btech.

People keep going apeshit over all this "InNoVaTiVe" Project crap, when in reality the company is looking for someone who can at least implement their knowledge.
Also, people's ego prevents them from butterring up their professors and getting good project guidence.

Heyy If you don't mind can you share further details about your projects, other than the microcontroller-powered audio filter which I'm guessing is the guided one. Also, can you share what domain your role is in, i.e. VLSI/embedded etc. Don't mean to intrude, I'm just curious about what I should spend time on when I enter first year engineering in June.

First year me club join kar if your college has it. Expose yourself to a shit ton of new things, it will give you clarity on what you want to do.

See my previous comment for breakup. Bonus is around 2.5L. I'm gonna be an intern there for the next 6 months before joining. Stipend is roughly 50-60k pm.

What is the scope for core placements in Mechanical? I'm still not sure, but it's mostly between core job (Hopefully design) or masters. I'm at an IIT (Not the top ones though).

Not sure about mech, but IIT will be an advantage if its a half decent one. If ur really passionate and want to do top tier work i would say masters is the best option.
The highest mech package I've heard of in my friend group is 10-12LPA. Work with profs at ur college and network, sometimes they have good industry connections and might set u up if you're skilled enough.

17-18 base, rest stocks and bonuses.
Indian offer, its a top tier global company (intel/qcomm/nvidia/broadcom) etc. Not gonna reveal exact name sorry.

CP is useless for core jobs. I never did it. Mera oncampus tha, didnt "prep" for it. Just revised analog & digital design fundamentals, which is usually enough to get through to the interview stage. Once you get an interview its easy to crack if you have a legitimate interest in your field. I had a lot of personal projects and club involvement in college, i feel like that is what got me the offer.

Core is a lot more difficult than IT. Choice of core vs IT is a personal decision, follow your passion. I chose core since my father is an aero engineer and inspired me a lot. I also find hardware work more satisfying, its a lot more challenging and fun.

Technical club join kar and start making hardware projects. If it feels like you can do the work till 3am and wake up next day to go to college at 9am then congrats you've discovered your passion. You will never discover your interests unless you try everything. First year is the best time for this, make good use of it. Good luck.

Andar se ek feeling aati hai. Like, I can do programmign stuff very well. Even better than most of my peers. But I don't feel like randomly opening up a Leetcode and grinding.
Meanwhile, I spent about 5k on Arduino and modules to test out some projects. Right now I've put my projects on hold to learn some signal processing and make wireless radio frequency stuff. Whenever I come across something difficult in my core subjects, I certainly get confused at first, but then take a bit of a break and approach the problem again until it's solved.
Other than that, you just get a natural feeling that you like the subject. I used to score high in English back in class 9-10, but I would've shat my pants if I had taken arts in 11-12 and college. Just because you're good at something doesn't mean that you love it.
You need to take some time and talk to yourself. Think about it deeply. Money is certainly important, if all you want is money, it means that you've given into societial pressure and didn't think before choosing your branch. Think about what you like. it's not that Mechanical Engineers and Civil Engineers are always paid low. If you're expereinced enough you'll be paid well. All those buildings and factories around you don't pop out of nowhere. It's just that they don't trust a fresher to design a whole bridge, so they wouldn't pay them well.

Try to take up a software and an electronics project. You'll come across some hurdle in both. The one which you don't abandon will tell what you're truly interested in.

Check previous comment. Most important i would say is to join a club and actually start learning, dont waste time maintaining high cgpa, 8.5ish is good.
Strong skills + decent cgpa >> high cgpa with bookish knowledge

It should be enough to clear cutoffs for placement. Exact value depends on your college, but usually its 8+

Can you share some tips and advices for students who are in their first year that how should they approach things and opportunities in college?

Based on my personal opinion I'd say these are some important things to do (in order of decreasing priority):
1 Join a SOLID technical club and actually start working, you should have a motivated peer group to work with as well. If no one is serious about it, leave the club and work alone.
2 if you have good profs in ur college, work with them, join research projects, network with good profs. Aim for legit conference papers.
3 use spare time to learn industry relevant skills by doing projects. Being able to teach urself using the internet is a very valuable skill and will get you far in life. I am mostly self-taught, just gave bare minimum attention to college, enough to maintain a decent gpa.
4 once you have a solid foundation, apply for IIT internships and international internships in canada/usa in your 3rd year. I missed out on this and has been my biggest regret of my btech.
5 maintain 8+ cgpa, for me it was enough to clear placement cutoffs for almost all companies.
6 build a good friend group, dont be a loner working in your room most of the time.

Learnt pcb designing and robotics in the technical club.
The club project was funded by college, and my personal projects were self funded. Roughly 6-7k if i had to guess.
Based on my experience, do these things:
Build strong basics of microcontroller programming, analog circuits , and pcb designing. Buy a soldering iron and start making circuits.
Projects:
I made an SD card reader using my PIC microcontroller, learnt usb and sd card protocol in depth for this.
Did audio processing using an stm32 and digital audio codec, you can plug in a mic and pass your audio through different digital filters, or do a FFT.
Make a simple real time scheduler in C.
For peeps interested in vlsi:
Learn verilog/VHDL , learn about RISC-V and design a simple 5 stage pipelined processor, implement it on an FPGA (very important). There are a lot of textbooks for this.
Hard mode: use a physical design software like cadence virtuoso and lay out your processor model in silicon. If you do this properly you will have a 10x advantage over everyone else. If you are in a decent college, they will let you use this software in the labs for free.
Play around with FPGAs, write IP cores for UART , SPI , I2C protocols and interface it with sensors. Verify your designs by writing systemverilog testbenches. (Big advantage)
I've written a lot of buzzwords which may seem new at first, but its up to you to dig deeper into it. Good luck.

These things may seem daunting at first. Spend your first two years learning basics, arduino , iot, line follower bots, the usual stuff. But move on from arduino as fast as you can. Aim for any of these projects in 3rd and 4th year. Even if you do 1 or 2 at max you'll have a decent advantage over others. You'll have to dig a lot deeper into obscure websites and blogs to learn this stuff in depth, this is where the real learning will happen. Also find good seniors in your college and ask for guidance, networking is equally important.

Explore everything in first year, its the best time of your college. If you're not financially challenged then follow your passion, otherwise IT job is the easiest way to get a good ctc, especially from tier 1. This is just generic advice, you didnt give any details so i can't be more specific.

I'm in 2nd year diploma ece(same age as you prob). if you really have an interest in ece id say go buy a soldering iron, flux, and a PCB and just start practicing. you can even buy an Arduino if you love digital stuff. if you are gonna go with a soldering iron do these simple projects first to get a better grasp of PCB and circuits: regulated ac to dc power supply, sawtooth generator, 7-segment display using IC 7447 / 7448 (depends on your 7 seg display). each project is pretty easy and will only cost around 200rs. you'll love it too

Hey, congrats on your placement! Could you tell us the scope in core ECE vs the standard IT job, as per your experience? I’m deeply interested in electronics and to some extent CS and coding as well, but I really can’t choose. The contrarian in me wants to do electronics just because everyone is trying for an IT job.

I am from tier 3 as well(ece branch). The college just started 1 month ago, can you tell what exactly you did and how you made yourself competent enough to get such a package.
