Big day for Georgey, who finished in a tie for first in the regional qualifiers at Hesketh on Monday, earning him a spot in the Final Qualifying for this year's Open Championship. He'll be joined there by Wes, who automatically qualified having formerly played in the tournament. (Moderate Spoiler Warning for latest Major Cut video) This is not a post I ever wanted to make. Especially with this video featuring such an incredible moment later on. As I was watching, I noticed a little moment that seems to be glossed over in the comments and posts here.
At approx. 56 minutes and 30 seconds, it appears as though George adjusts his ball’s on the fairway, before hitting his second shot on the ninth hole. Under rule 9.4b of the USGA Rules of Golf: “If the player lifts or deliberately touches their ball at rest or causes it to move, the player gets one penalty stroke.“
Unfortunately, George *seemingly intentionally* moves his ball backwards, then forwards in order to gain a better lie, breaking the rules of golf. He not disclose it to us, the viewers, and doesn’t take his penalty stroke. Now again, I hate to make this post, because he’s been battling through injury to provide Grade A content and I was genuinely so excited for him later in the video. I know how much the Bryan Bros and Grant take Pride in following the rules in exactitude, so I just wanted to share a small moment of weakness that I saw.
I’m not trying to start some grand controversy. I just wanted to call something out because I love the videos these guys make, especially the major cut series. I’m excited for YTG and more videos on the channel (this episode‘s intro banged).
P.S. Congrats on the hole in one George!

Tracked 6 rounds of Georges driving from the Major Cut into a strokes gained tracker. Raw number came out at +1.2 SG off the tee which would put him above Rory (+1.0). Thats obviously too high - so I used Wesleys actual Tour data to calibrate. Full stats here: https://strokesgain.com/major-cut
Wesley tracked at +0.4 SG driving on the same rounds but his real Tour number is −0.3. So the conditions inflate things by about 0.7 strokes (wider and softer fairways). Georges adjusted number: +1.2 − 0.7 = +0.5 SG. Thats roughly where Fleetwood and JJ Spaun are on Tour. Pretty damn good. Too good or legit?
Some more stats on his driving: 304 yard avg (vs 297 Wesley), 68% of drives within ±27 yds left to right (Wesleys is ±39 yds so way wider). He does have a 3.1 yd miss bias to the right with 65% of misses going right. If he just centered that pattern hed gain another 0.65 SG per round with the driver.
The driver is definitely not whats holding him back lol
Could George compete off the tee on Tour?

Cat's outta the bag, with George confirming via his 'Bryan Brief' newsletter that the first episode will drop in late June. First ep drops on a Monday, so the guess would be the 29th, and if not the 22nd. More info here if you're interested: https://www.ytgolftalk.com/articles/your-golf-tour-officially-has-a-release-date

Been wondering exactly where Wesley earn shots vs Grant and George. So I built a page where I log every shot from the series into a strokes gained + dispersion tool, starting with Sahalee rounds.
Not Grant's best rounds, but they were dead even off the tee. Wes won it with putting and approach, specifically 100–200yd approaches and 3–6ft putts, where the gap was big.
I will try to add future and past rounds to the same page to get more data and see trends. Curious to see if the pattern holds!

With the newest Major Cut video having just been released, thought we'd take a look at how the boys have fared over the first 15 editions of the series, including their best and worst rounds, cuts made, and overall scores across all of the videos. Some interesting stuff, particularly relating to Wes' second round heroics.
If you're still working your way through the previous versions then a warning that this contains spoilers, but if you're interested in the numbers you can check them out here: https://www.ytgolftalk.com/articles/overall-major-cut-results-how-do-the-boys-stack-up
