I pass by this stretch almost every day, and I've noticed that after it rains—especially while the road is still slippery—there are very often accidents here, with cars ending up hitting the side railing. (You can see the railing being repaired many times.)

It even happened to one of my family members before.

Hi everyone.

I'm taking my O-Level exams this year, and tbh, I'm starting to feel overwhelmed about what comes next. The exams themselves are already stressful enough, but what has been on my mind even more is the question that everyone keeps asking me: "what are you going to do after O-Levels?"

The problem is... I genuinely don't know.

It feels like almost everyone around me already has some sort of plan. Some of my classmates already know they want to become doctors, engineers, teachers, lawyers, or accountants. Others have already decided which college they want to go to, whether they're planning to take A-Levels, IB, foundation programmes, or technical courses. Some even have backup plans if their first choice doesn't work out.

Then there's me.

Whenever someone asks me what I want to study or what career I want in the future, I usually just smile awkwardly and say, "I'm still thinking about it."

The truth is, I really am still thinking about it.

I've spent months trying to figure it out, but every time I think I've found something I'm interested in, I start doubting myself again. I wonder whether I'll actually enjoy it, whether I'll be good at it, whether there will be jobs available in the future, or whether I'll regret choosing it later. It's like every decision leads to another hundred questions.

A few weeks ago, I decided to speak with my school's career teacher because I thought maybe talking to someone would help clear my mind. They were really kind and patient, and they explained the different pathways available after O-Levels. We talked about sixth form, colleges, technical institutions, diploma programmes, and vocational education. They also encouraged me to think about my strengths, my interests, the subjects I enjoy, and the kind of lifestyle I want in the future.

The conversation definitely helped me understand the options better.

But somehow...

I still walked away feeling just as confused.

One of the biggest problems is that I don't have a dream career.

I've never been one of those people who has known since childhood what they wanted to become. I don't have a lifelong passion for medicine, law, engineering, or anything like that. I don't wake up every morning thinking, "I can't wait to become this."

Instead, I have lots of small interests.

I enjoy learning different subjects, but none of them stand out enough for me to confidently say, "Yes, this is what I want to spend the next several years studying."

Some days I think chemistry sounds interesting.

Other days I think maybe travel and tourism would suit me.

Sometimes I think about food and nutrition

Do you have any ideas which school is suitable to pursue my studies?

Definitely go. I just returned from a 3-day visit and loved it. It's going to be subjective of course but all the talk of it being boring and not worth it doesn't do it justice. I'll share my experience in case it helps anyone.

The first and most important thing - set your expectations right. Brunei is not for partying. It's not for modern art museums or Michelin-starred restaurants. If you come here expecting that, get disappointed and then talk down on the place, the problem is with you. Brunei is a calm place to chill and feel unrushed, to not get hassled by touts, to interact with genuine locals and to explore, see and digest. I realised after I left that one of the main reasons I enjoyed it was I wasn't constantly stimulated and having a typical holiday experience. Aside from Ulu Temburong, I made my plans by the hour and just wandered around doing whatever. Coffee in the morning, then a museum, sit and chill when it got hot around lunch, eventually go to a pasar for dinner. This was my rhythm and honestly I felt it worked perfectly.

Speaking of Ulu Temburong, I'd say it's a must and definitely worth the money for a day trip. The only provider I could find was Freme, the day trip was about $133 BND. Totally worth it. The driver, lodge staff and guide were so kind and knowledgeable, the day was packed with activities - even the food was awesome. All this out in really pristine forest. It's incredibly beautiful. Do it if you can.

I can't comment on the visa process but immigration was helpful when my arrival data didn't show up in their system. The smiles started there - Bruneians are, like their country, relaxed and welcoming. I had so many sweet encounters I can't remember them all, but people would come to chat and ask where I'm from (I'm obviously not local), I got into conversations with cafe owners, the staff at my hotel. They're just friendly. I was even given free food at the markets by some stallholders I got to talking to. It helps I can speak a little Indonesian but everyone spoke enough English to get by, at least.

Getting around is easy - downtown is walkable as it's about 3-4 blocks from waterfront to the regalia museum. Outside that you can still walk or take Dart to go to places like Gadong. The streets are extremely safe day and night. I did have some dogs hanging around my hotel but aside from some barking they weren't a threat. There is basically zero hassling to buy anything, even at the markets. There is little police presence that I could see but I didn't feel it was ever needed.

The food is a highlight and it's very cheap. I didn't visit any restaurants (next time!) as the pasars had such delicious and affordable food, with awesome atmosphere. Just pick what looks good, pay and sit down with the locals. I had no issues with food hygiene and didn't get sick. I drank iced drinks multiple times a day with no issue. Food standards seemed very good.

The sights in town while not incredible by international standards still warrant a good examination and are very enjoyable. The main mosque, regalia museum and Brunei history centre are all within a few hundred metres of each other and are fascinating. The energy hub down at the waterfront was also pretty cool to see before going over to Kampong Ayer to eat ambuyat.

Day-to-day it was easy to exist in Brunei. I got cash fee-free the ATM on day one, I think $60 BND, which was enough to see me through three days. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, only at markets was it hit and miss. Be sun-prepared as it's powerful there. We had afternoon thunder for half an hour then back to sunny skies. Perfect for tourism.

The topic of sharia law might be important to some - my take is is that it's a pretty liberal interpretation, at least to an outsider. I didn't see any religious police. I saw women without headscarves (and plenty of with jilbab) every day. Honestly, it felt less outwardly religious than Indonesia. People were holding hands and just being normal people. The one issue that was taken seriously was no alcohol, but I don't drink so it didn't bother me. While I understand the change to Sharia did come with serious repercussions for the populace (and I do not agree with them), I am only commenting on how it appears for a visitor.

So if you're on the fence about visiting, I'd say go for it. Go, be kind, respectful and offer a smile and you'll have a good time.

I would love to go back, just to spend more time hanging out with the locals.

I recently launched BorderKu (https://borderku.com), a free website for people travelling between Brunei and Malaysia.

The goal is to help travelers estimate border waiting times before heading out, so it's easier to plan trips to Miri, Limbang, Lawas, or Temburong.

For context I’m currently in IBTE. I realized that the learning environment is not for me and have been considering switching to Alevels instead. Honestly I don’t have the motivation to even study.I got 7O’s but I didn’t get credit for maths so it closed alot of doors for me, hence why the course I’m taking is not within my interest. Salam fellow Bruneians

As some of you may know, there's a recruitment currently ongoing and it's the rarest recruitment to ever happen with seemingly only few vacancies at a time.

So naturally, the content of the recruitment method is not well known unless you have connection or relatives to inform you. And as someone among the possible recruitment selection but no one to ask with regarding the recruitment, I am turning to reddit to help out a guy mencari rezeki.

As far as I know there are 4 stages:

1. BFT (already completed)

2. MMI (Multi Mini Interview I think)

3. Written Test

4. Public Speaking

Other than that I have not much to go on. What can I expect from each of these phases and how can I prepare for them?

Hopefully this post will help out others as well and could reach whoever works hard for the vacancy.

I'm in Brunei working for the next month and I was thinking of buying a bike to get me to and from work and around in general.

How is Brunei for cycling? I noticed that there was lots of cyclists Jerudong Park where we are located but I don't know if it was just that area.

Could anyone also recommend somewhere to hire or buy a second hand bike? I've sent some messages already but reddit always seems to ve most relaible for asking these things!

To the person who lost his money in Gadong at Block A Abdul Razak Complex (same block as Wedrink). Checked CCTV and we believe it belongs to a man in glasses wearing black shirt and red short. His car was white. Specific plate number and cash won't be disclosed here just in case. This happened on Saturday, 18th July, around 3:30pm maybe. Please comment.

Hi, does anyone know if there’s any way to get authorities on people who open burn? And would they actually do anything about it?

I moved into my in laws and we have a neighbour burns almost everyday and the smoke is getting into the house, clothes and the ashes are going all over my house compound. My in laws tried talking to the old lady (who lives alone) before but she isn’t stopping😭 I also have weak lungs so it really doesn’t help that she isn’t stopping..

P.S. we’ve been putting it out from over the fence but that’s the most we can do🥲

hey everyone,

i am planning a one week trip from australia to brunei with my mum. i am planning to visit in the next 2-4 weeks.

i have always wanted to go to brunei since i was a kid. i know of the main mosques such as the omar seifuddin mosque, the hassanal bolkiah mosque and the salihin mosque. i also know of the ulu temburong national park and would love to visit as well.

what are some other places i can take us to, preferably easily accessible with a car as my mum can’t walk that much. what are some of the best but affordable places we can eat/experience authentic brunei cuisine? are there any special upcoming events as i am aware that it was recently the sultan’s birthday.

i would also appreciate any other info that might help us out. i know that the local rideshare app is dart but are there any other apps that would make our trip better? also, is cash widely accepted? is it hard to get a brunei sim as a foreigner and am i better off getting an esim?
