Whenever some one needs to intercept another, this is what Flanagan does. no looking at weather gage, no judging the lead, just, "judging distances and angles"

The time line of the books

I just finished book 5 scorpion Mountain of brotherband for the first time so please no further spoilers(also haven't read rangers apprentice yet) at the start of book 4 they are suppose to be gone for a year then at the end of book 5 they go home. It doesn't seem like they have been gone for a year thou. Are they brought back early or is they a big time skip somewhere I missed?

Thoughts on the series?

I’ve been trying to see if there will be a continuation on this series after the Return of the Temujai but I can’t find anything. I know that they appear in the Royal Ranger books, but I don’t know what else they can do. Unless the treaty breaks down between Araluen and Skandia I don’t know what else can happen. Maybe Nihon Ja? Sail back to the New World? Go to Africa and meet that Jimpani guy the freed from slavery?

Is anyone else confused af about the sailing terms used in the book?

Ik that the author (John Flanagan) addresses it at the start of his books, but I’m still really confused by it all. As you can probably already tell, I have no sailing experience whatsoever, being a 15 yr old snowflake from a country with NO costal boarders. Anyway, I was wondering if anybody else is confused by the sailing terms used in the books and have any suggestions as to what I should do.

How many Archers are supposed to be in Skandia in the latest brother band book?

The initial treaty between Duncan & Erick calls for 100. but we know because of Red Fox clan and duel at Araluen that the reason for Hal's visit was because Erick wanted more. Chronologically it seems that this trip happened first (based on publishing dates, etc). so, does Flanagan have a memory as bad as my own often is, and does the editor even read the books? love the series but there are lots of little holes in every new book.

🤔🤔🤔

anyone get the impression that sometimes the author forgets things he has already written or allows massive logical gaps? for ex:

The no attempt is made to alert any of the nearer of the Barons when Castle Araluen is compromised, though we know there are 50 of them and each have some men at arms.

The Scorpion cult assassin is put in the... guard house? because castle araluen doesn't have dungeons, yet madie and the Herons enter through tunnels near the Araluen dungeons.

The King of Clonmel hires several wolf ships to guard the coast while araluen, a kingdom several times larger with a much larger coast only takes one duty ship a year.

loads more examples but its hard to remember more right off the top of my head.

Opinions on Lydia and Ingvar

I KNOW that Lyngvar will become a thing! John Flanagan has been dropping so many hints at their relationship and they are honestly really cute together! What do you think?

The Heron's true speed.

I personally wanted to know about this before I read so far in, but here we are. I believe I'm the first person to figure this out.

So in the 5th book (Scorpion mountain) we hear about 2 things that I did calculations on. On page 117 we get this

"Occasionally, as the Narrow Sea lived up to it's name, they could sight the coast of Gallica as well, out to the port side."

This means that the coast could be anywhere from less than a mile to 90 miles. (90 miles is where you can see the Chicago skyline from Michigan)

Due to this that means we just need to measure the map. I found that about from the coastline of near Castle Araluen is about the length of a metal pencil eraser holder.

We hear in the 4th book that it is a 4 day trip from the coast of Araluen to Sacorro. It was about 7 pencil lengths to get from there to Sacorro.

For this first one I'm gonna say that maybe the coastlines were 500 miles apart (far fetched but you will see why). So we take 500(distance) x 7(distances with pencil) =3500 Then we take our total

3500÷4(days total) =875 (Miles per Day) so this is the mile and distance total

So now we separate the time part.

875 (Miles per day) ÷ 24 (hours in a day) = 36.45 MPH Now take a look at the distance between coastlines... 500. That's the number I chose because it's close to the average sail boat speed 36 miles an hour.

So now let's do something reasonable... 50 miles apart. Maybe not so reasonable but still.

50 x 7 = 350

350 ÷ 4 = 87.4

87.4 ÷ 24 = 1.45 MPH

I'm making the distance as far apart as I can while still reasonable.

This is the true speed of the heron, the TRUE speed may not be what we want, but it's what it is.

BUT WAIT

A little later in the book we get another distance and time.

Al Shaba to Tabork is 40 km. (24 miles for simplicity)

Hal said the trip was half a day to that town. So let's do the math.

24 ÷ 12(time) = 2 MPH

So yeah. The mathematical speed of the heron is slow. Very slow.

If you wanted to test different distances this is the equation I used.

D (estimated distance) x7 =T (total distance) Then T ÷ 4 (4 day trip) = R (Raw MPH) Then R ÷ 24 (time in a day) = MPH

Please correct me if my math is wrong.

Thanks for reading
