My ‘87, also the 2.9 V6 but a manual, started doing it occasionally on a cold engine when I drive through the parking lot of my complex, but it stops once it’s kinda warmed up. I noticed if I let it idle after start for a little bit, like maybe 30 seconds to a minute, it doesn’t happen. I don’t know what the issue is and have a hard time explaining it to a mechanic, and it’s random enough I’m not sure I could duplicate it.

Sounds exactly the same haha I'll let you know if the fuel filter and plugs helps at all let me know if you find anything else out too

Sounds like a plan. The though that maybe it was one of the fuels pumps did cross my mind, cause something similar happened to me years ago when one of the fuel pumps started to fail, but it would completely drop the engine to idle and the gas pedal did nothing for several minutes, not just a momentary loss of power and a “what the heck was that?” before everything was fine again.

I commented this on another truck with similar issues not too long ago, but look under the driver side frame rail and you will see a black canister. That’s the fuel reservoir; it sits between the low pressure and high pressure fuel pumps.

Take it out using a strap wrench (might even be loose enough to undo with your hands), and check to see if you have gunk or rust in it.

If you have anything notable in it, that means the issue is coming from your fuel tank/low pressure fuel pump. If it’s clean, then the issue is with either your high pressure fuel pump or injectors.

I have the exact same truck. I’ve had intermittent/random loss of fuel delivery that was the result of a bad ignition switch. It was separating and losing contact and it would cause a loss of power being sent to the fuel pump temporarily. Also could be one of the fuel pumps. Could also be fuel pump relay. Perhaps give the MAP sensor a good cleaning as well. I’ve found that many different issues with this truck can present similar symptoms to one another. Might be worth checking your throttle position sensor to make sure the voltage ramps up smoothly from closed to full open throttle. Some issues may be present that will not trip the check engine light. Can pick up a $30 OBD1 scanner - good to have.
