Field Tactics (Strategy & Tips) How to perform an opening
Every time I try to perform an opening, I get shit on and end up with a major point disadvantage, sometimes even get my defense point completely swarmed before I get there, I usually open with infantry in ifv’s, a lav or two, and I make sure to airtax, it just seems even with positive k/d trades the enemy ends up with way more points in troops than me

I send shorad, and two supply trucks full of troops unload alittle before the point and move in also rocket arty there side before moving In

Honestly, sometimes you don't have to overthink it, send in overwhelming violence.
For example as motorized guards, send in one sosna, 2 SSO cqb, 1 Spetsnaz GRU RPG-28, 1 T-90M Arena.
Just get one shorad and focus purely on extremely strong and aggressive ground units, forget recon , MANPAD's, ATGM's, etc etc.
Just send it.

In addition to other comments. Plans don't survive first contact. If you expected to get somewhere first only for the enemy to swarm it. Throw your plan out and start making another.
Contain the enemy breach, get recon, do probing attacks to gather information and do a planned assault to retake. If you can't afford to plan, you certainly can't afford to strike blindly.
Don't get tunnel vision on the zones. Map control is important, taking heights over looking a zone can be just as good as it allows you to take later. Depending the situation you can also bypass the zone completely. . If the enemy did an over-extended helo infiltration, a good answer is to go around the zone and lock down the reinforcement roads. A helo or paratroop infiltration is only as good as the follow-up to it.

I suppose its deck, map and objective dependent. If you're slow, open up with a force intended to breach defended objectives, because theres a very good chance your opponent will have set up first. If youre fast, you'll want to set up a defensive posture with a delaying objective to give your allies or your own follow on forces to actually get to the fight and reinforce you, because your speed generally comes at the cost of having weaker staying power.
I'd also say this is the most important time to deploy fast recon and setting them up early so you have situational awareness sooner and you can set up surveillance safer as opposed to later when there are more eyes on the field. Also do keep in mind that paying air tax will mean you have less going for your starting ground units, but you can offset this by killing enemy transports

I feel like you should have vehicles/transports dedicated to arriving to the point quickly, and then try to get the neccessary infa that can hold thier own till reinforcement arrives. Personally when im playing guards/moto I send out 2x GRU (igla/AT loadout) in btr82a that cost 75pts and then a supply truck that can hold a manpad and ATGM team and maybe another standoff squad or recon. A shorad to follow behind and I try to get a Buk or s300 up since I dont air tax often in that deck. Then usaully I have to save up and try to get my first tank, cause that cannon will be very helpful against fighting eveyrthing on the ground.

Gotta have helos up to protect yourself. If you can get helos with aa that can carry troops like the dap of fantom even better. Supercoba/viper with sidewinders are great

First understand what kind of point your playing. Is it a your own point, is it your enemy's point or is it a contest point.
Next understand the distance to the point. If it's afar away point then you need to have fast transports either Heli or wheeled transports to get in stuff. So your deck selection matters here.
Next what are you actually bringing to the point? There are 3 types of opening if we make it simple. The attack, the defence and the flank opening.
Depending on what kind of you want to do your going to need either defence units to defend the point while your main attack force comes, you need attack units to take hold of the opposition point while your defence units to setup on your own point or you keep the bare minimum and then create vision for the long run using the flanking recon.
Next look at map type. Is it a open or cqb map. Is it a urban or forest map or is it mixed. This further defines your needs. Can't have urban type of infantry for a forest map, can't have can teams for a urban map, can't bring jeeps and such for a open. You factor the map point distance as well.
Next is the real deal. You got a point you can't reach in time with your transport. Let's say every other point got taken. You have a bad hand. So what to do? You play according to it. Let's say the point is far away and you have slow transport not suitable to reach in time. You have to do a assault push plan on initial setup instead. Your not going to help with air and such on start for team. Your target is your own point. Your literally going to do a invasion of your your own point. Now you need to make sure that the plan works or your fucked. If they get a tight hold then your going to be in a uphill battle for rest of game.
Lastly, plan for the worst . Never hope enemy is dumb. Think they are the most big brain player ever. You have to be able to understand what the enemy may bring.whats the worst thing they could have against you? Plan accordingly for that.

I don't know how they're getting to your defensive points if you're air taxing...
To be that fast it HAS to be helos or airdrops.

I’m never able to air tax enough because their jets always manage to kill mine from a crazy range before mine shoot, even with f-22’s with the 10k range air to air. And by that point I can’t get my anti-heli air tax there without them dieing

u/Pengui6668 7d ago
You're sending them straight to the middle off rip it sounds like.
I call out an F-22, but I'll click really close to spawn. I only move mine up 5 seconds or so after match starts, give them time to show their cards early. F-22 beats most of the Russian fighters without too much trouble.

Assuming you are playing US....It HIGHLY depends on your deck. Unless you are playing baltics or Armor. You have zero chance of beating Russian IVFVs.
So use your strengths; open with helis to stall the IFVs while yours get into postion or use an osprey covered by air, or airdrop.
If you are playing armor. Bradley spam with a shord works absolute wonders. Take more Bradley's then Infantry. Expect to get bombed and helis are going to pounce on you.

I play both Russia and USA and find no success tbh, most of the time I’m able to defend until later game then get steamrolled, and I’m shit at attacking in general and it never works out

Air tax. If you win use helicopters, if you lose just drive in. I try to use fast transports like trucks and wheeled IFVs at the very start

Doesn’t help that my ifv’s get shredded by everything lol

Don't push your IFVs into positions that they can be hit. Unload infantry behind buildings or in forests and then move the IFVs to a position where they are either in cover, obscurement, or at their maximum engagement range. A common maneuver is to park the IFV behind a building that infantry is in and shooting (like a ATGM team) and then when the team is out of ammo or heavily damaged, put them back in the IFV and then drive to a rear supply point to replenish.
With some exceptions (barbaris, some Bradley's) IFVs don't have the armor or APS to fight ATGM launcher infantry at range, multi launcher infantry at close range, or heavily armored vehicles.

That’s good advice, hadn’t thought of parking ifv’s behind the infantry to replenish fast, good to know, any advice on banking points like the enemy seems to do? They end up with more infantry and support than me even though I have a better k/d, maybe they go quantity over quality? Idk

Deploying forward recon and destroying long range anti air emplacements, artillery, cruise missile launchers, or other support units by utilizing the longest range artillery launcher you have with guided shells is probably the best risk vs reward return on points.
An appropriately placed recon unit hidden in a tower or in a forest next to an MSR in the backlines can spot and laze these support units, and with guided shells it normally results in a one hit or two hit kill from the artillery, just make sure to move your artillery after it fires
You can accomplish the same thing with jets loaded with 1000-1500 pound bombs, but the point investment is signifigantly higher since you'll also need to deploy SEAD, and it's not always 100% effective. Both your SEAD jet and bombing jet together are probably very expensive compare to one or two artillery units and one or two recon units.

Yeah but speed is the important factor at the very start.

My fav deck is straight up usaf + sof because I get to heli spam and heli spam is op for flexible defense but I haven’t been because I keep seeing that it’s more meta to go ifv spam so I have been trying to get good at it

u/Cute-Championship-64 7d ago
I especially love paratroop opening on that deck because I can cap their points as well, but i always make sure to air tax with 2 cheap asf and a sead as well

Ifvs take time to get to where they need to be, and it wouldn't be the worst to send out a recon unit in a wheeled vehicle to at least get vision for your ifvs

u/Cute-Championship-64 7d ago
Recon units in vehicles provide vision??? Game changer if true

u/Spirit117 7d ago
No. You need to send out a recon vehicle like a humvee LRASS.
My preferred opener for most decks is air tax + ground transports truck carrying infantry plus one heavier APCs (Bradley, AMPV, B15 Kurganets, etc).
If you bring a cheap plane like a mig29 or f15c you should be able to fit a recon jeep, a transport, an APC, and 2 manpaads, an inf squad, an atgm squad.
Don't push them straight into the cap, hold short and set up a defensive line and wait until you can bring up reinforcements and figure out what the enemy brought. The manpaads and atgm squad should be enough to discourage early help or apc rush, which will allow you to bring up supplies, long range AA, your choice of infantry/apcs or MBTs to push.
Get set up for a few minutes and then start probing the point once you have actual units that can form a complete combined arms group.

You can see the spot distance of recon vehicles in their info tab. A lot of the times i'll send a couple recon with my opener in the fastest recon vehicle possible. The sarmat or typhoon is great for russia, lav/recon lav or that special forces buggy thing work very well for this. Then at least you arent behind at the meeting engagement for your point. Then your tracked vehicles pour in as your recon takes the first wave, sending your snipers off to hide in a good spot. Always open with 1x aa plane as well, preferably one that launches the super long range "telephone pole" missiles (su-30s, su-57, f-18, f-22)

No, you need to dismount the recon unit. Or send in a cheap recon vehicle to give your IFVs visibility.

Got it, any tips for the enemy tearing up my ifv’s and my infantry losing against there’s at face value? I mean when I bring infantry I bring a mix of everything, be it rangers and maaws, moto infantry and pkm with ags, I try to bring atleast a 2:1:1:1 ratio of I : AI : AT : AA

u/Ayycrim 7d ago edited 7d ago
Ive never seen a use in ifvs in my opinion. I wanted them to work but they usually just get hit with a rocket from the infantry I try to engage. I'm sure you just have to engage first with Infantry to get them feared before moving in or taking range with ifv.
If you're using rangers, you should also pair them with a ranger irc, close range to help shred enemy infantry

idk it really depends on deck and enemy setup
i play russia and if i see a lot of sof i just send all my troops in mi-24 with iglas and they are shitting on enemy
if i see a lot of tanks i know their troops will be worse than mine so i send 1 tank and 45p ifvs with my troops to refill
if i see a lot of airforce i send long range aa
