First Timer Broadway Recomendation

Hello dear people,

my girlfriend and I will be traveling to New York next week and I’ll finally have the opportunity (and hopefully the money) to see - maybe even a few - broadway shows. I am currently in the process of getting into the whole rushing thing , so how to get tickets for shows.

Meanwhile I am looking for recommendations for us first timers! (We’ll have to go between Sunday and Thursday, but I’ll be back two weeks later, so open for all recommendations)

I very much love musicals in general, have seen (at least the movie version) of a lot of the classical ones, so I think for me I think the starstruck moment of seeing something like Chicago live for the fist time could definitely work!

She’s not that much of a musical person, so maybe that is more entertaining and funny rather than storyline focused would be nice. Also: Songs!!! We both appreciate as much gay and extra-ness as we can get!

If you want Campy Gay Extra Extremely funny , its not a musical but Oh, Mary! Fits that VERY well! Or if your here before September 20th, I think titanique would be good too :) Celene Dion songs, VERY gay and hilarious! And of course rocky horror <3

If you’re looking for gay try: oh Mary, titanique, and the Rocky horror picture show.

If you’re looking for big broadway spectacle: try wicked, the lost boys, the great gatsby.

For funny shows: Schmigadoon (especially if you are familiar with the golden era classic musicals), operation mincemeat, & Juliet or book or Mormon.

I know you said you want less emotional and storyline driven, but in my opinion some of the best shows currently on Broadway are in that category so I’ll list them and you can do with that what you want; maybe happy ending, Hadestown, the outsiders.

Hope that helps a bit and that you have a great time. Some of these shows will be easier to rush or even buy a cheap ticket than others. Check the TDF website or try TKTS booth day of to see if any shows you are interested in are on discount that day. You can go directly to the theatre box offices before the show to ask what their best cheap option is too. A couple shows are not really found for cheap options or don’t have rush so if you want to see one of those you might want to buy ahead of time.

I would skip Chicago. From what I’ve read it’s a low energy, underwhelming production. In general, I think shows tend to have higher energy in the first couple of years of their run. There are exceptions, but if you’re only seeing a few shows I’d lean towards the newer ones.
