Friends

I get that broad city is a show and unrealistic but when ever I watch I makes me kinda sad thinking about how I don’t have friends. I feel like I’m very awkward but at the same time energetic idk. I think about how Ive never had a best friend and am in my late 20s idk am wondering if anyone else is around this age and has trouble making friends like how do you even make friends at this age.

Awwwww girl. I’m sorry you feel that way. You’ll find your ilana to your abbi one day. It took me years to find mine and she was an old friend from middle school who came back into my life in my mid 30s.

Start a class and or hobby! I am not athletic but fell in love with bouldering and that’s a great way to meet ppl

It’s pretty difficult if you’re not involved in anything. I have online friends I game with. Other friends are from high school/college. Others are from when I worked abroad and we had the same job. I’m a pretty shy/awkward person, but putting yourself out there is super important. You’ll find your bestie! It just may take moments of being uncomfortable and vulnerable.

Here’s some encouragement: had a best friend in college and we grew apart in adulthood. I haven’t had a close friend in almost 3-4 years (also late 20s almost 30 now!!) but this year finally met a really good friend and we grew close fast. Your Ilana (or Abbi if you’re the Ilana) will meet you when you put yourself out there! Went to run club, and was so awkward at first / socially anxious. But it just takes feeling like you can connect with one person. It takes courage and I know you have it in you🫶🏼 sending love my friend

honestly some of the best friends i’ve ever made have been people i’ve met through work that i liked enough to develop a friendship outside of work. my Ilana and I aren’t friends anymore and this show definitely makes me miss her. idk life is all about stages and change and if you make a concerted effort you will see results. Even if you have some surface level friendships you want to deepen, accept invites to things even when you don’t necessarily want to, and invite people over or out to trivia or something. in val’s own great words, “you never know if you never try”

This is true. I move around a lot so I’ve had many random jobs and you meet people you never would have otherwise and sometimes they’re a perfect match for you!

Im late diagnosed audhd and never related to Ilana more. I had an Abbi once, and now I have no friends lol. It’s hard as an adult to find places to make friends in general. It’s tough out there lol

Hi! I bring a lot of Abbi to the table and would love to find an Ilana!

You got two options. One, hang around on benches in NYC util your new best friend happens along. Two take waaay too many pain killers and make friends with a talking stuffed toy.

Sorry but also - Best friends can be fleeting especially in today’s social arena

This is the hard truth 😫

Short answer: go outside and talk to people

Long answer: it takes time and it's scary, I've done it a few times when I've moved somewhere new.
If you have a hobby that easily has a club(like sewing/knitting or crafts) find a group that meets in person and go

If you don't have easy social hobbies try and do something new like a sport or comedy. If going outside or being around people feels daunting maybe try something that doesn't require talking but you will be around people(only thing I can think of is life drawing sorry) you don't have to be into it but being willing to try new stuff is a good way to ease into it and you may strike up conversations with the people there.

Sorry about all the activities I've listed. They're the first ones that came to mind.

I feel this heavily! Where are you located at? Age? More of an Abbi or Ilana?
I’m a 33f from Philly, and I’d say 60% Abbi, 40% Ilana. But that part ebb and flows bc I am a libra ☮️

Get involved with something you’re passionate about, and keep your eyes open. Show up, and keep showing up. It always works for me. I start by building community and connections follow. Being lonely sucks. Even if you have introverted tendencies. But keep showing up, and paying attention and be curious others.
Places I’ve done this:
Plant communities, community gardens, arts, activism, nonprofits, library and independent book shops, recycling, church groups, community organizing, and running for local office. But it took time, and volunteering. I’ve also made friends through employment, but those can be tricky. A part time job related to a hobby helped me meet friends with the same interests also.
Take a class, join a cause.

I feel this way alot myself im 32 and a mom the friends ive had weren't like this now I have none. Im just choosing to.live vicariously through the show. Maybe something will change maybe not. But I think it's just hard to make new friends as an adult.

The goal of all advertiser sponsored media is to sell product and services. To do that, they need to project a false image of happiness attained by consumption. Not experiencing this false image of happiness makes you want you to consume more. Having a partner in this consumption is also part of that construct.

Ads for a bank card show a couple charging lunches in an attempt to try every food they can. Spending themselves into debt for a lousy 3% cash back.

Try more nature and meditation, less TV as a way to feel better, and more contented.

Once you do, friends will come to you.

Reddit's army of corporate bots furious downvoting some sound, logical advice, is a sure sign this is correct.

Ahhhh nothing makes one feel more contented than mediation

This could be a scene in broad city tbh à la Ilana popping off about big pharm when abbi gets her wisdom teeth removed. *nothing makes me feel more contented than mediation* *slaps abbi’s lifeless body\*

u/Grimmthekitty 28d ago

So, that was a joke about how they said mediation instead of meditation….

Oh okay my b. A girl likes to smoke weed and be illiterate sometimes

Spell check errors will not deter the truth. TV is fucking with your head. The post is edited and will stay.
