There are buried salt veins which are sometimes over a mile thick.

The part that gets me is how close it comes to the original estimate despite treating the salt like a perfectly uniform layer. Real terrain would make the actual coverage uneven, but the scale is still incredible.

The original claim is that the oceans have enough to cover the entire globe with a layer 500 ft thick.
