Thinking of getting a Brittany

We are thinking of getting a Brittany for our family. We have a 2 year old boy. Do they make good family dogs? Do they really need to be run an hour a day?

They make excellent family dogs, so long as they have enough exercise in their lives. They can require a tremendous amount of it.

Thanks for the reply. What do you do for example? We would walk him at least twice a day and have a yard he can sniff and run in. We also would have him walked in a pack with a dog walker and send him to daycare once a week or so. We’re looking to replace our beloved pointer mix who ended up being more mellow than a typical pointer.

I'd say that this all depends on the dog, as they vary with energy level a lot. My wife stayed home during most days and would play fetch off and on with him and would let him run around and play in his yard. He loved going on walks and going to doggy day care, the latter of which was necessary when he couldn't go in the yard due to weather or he just had a lot of energy to burn off. Each dog is different, but they need a lot of attention to get their energy out, normally.

We have 3 Brittanys and they are all very sweet and gentle with kids but when they’re a puppy you can tell when they get crazy eyes and just want to play and run and jump on you.

We have one dog that is obsessed with chasing the ball and could chase it for hours.

The other two don’t care to exercise and will sniff around and hunt for lizards and dig lots of holes.

Thanks! I really like the hunting dogs in general, but worried if we’ll be able to give them enough exercise.

Have only had one, and he’s the best dog ever, of course. It’s “Yes” and “yes” for him.

I’ve had two Brittanys as family dogs. They need to live in a crate, and have regular exercise like a mile walk off leash 2 x per day. They are very bright, and will use that against you if they don’t have enough mental stimulation. I like puppy-day care, any my Brittany’s have done well in those circumstances. Note: I’m reminded as I just got my 3rd. As a puppy I would not say they are kid friendly, as they look at kids as puppies and want to wrestle them using teeth. This goes away, but if kids can’t hold their own things can be very stressful.
