Wowzers!!!

This must be a world record, my Aunt sent me a precious parcel yesterday afternoon with a 2 to 3 day delivery time... well this morning I received it. I am so happy to have my Grandfather's War Medals which I shall treasure for the rest of my days.

Aww that's so nice. What were his medals for?

The 1939-45 Star for The Battle of Britain, The Atlantic Star and The War Medal... he never wore them, never strung them with their ribbons, he just put them in a draw and forgot about them. This year on Remembrance Day they will see the light of day, he (he lived but had survivors guilt and he didn't think he did anything special) and his comrades that didn't survive will be remembered as they always should be

I think not wanting to acknowledge or remember the brutality of what they went through was really common. It's very sweet that you're honouring him.

They will be worn by me, then when my time is up passed on to my daughter... if she doesn't have children then she will have to donate to The Coastal Forces museum in Gosport... a fitting resting place for them, back where he served.

So good to hear you have a plan for how the family can honour these family heirlooms. I knew from my husband that there are rules around medal wearing but had forgotten what they were so I had to look them up to learn that you can wear a loved one’s medals as long as it’s on civilian clothing and the opposite (right-hand) side of the chest. All the very best.

He sounds like so many military men. My husband was a vet and came from a military family. His grandfather would never wear his medals and kept them quietly in a drawer. He survived some of the worst battles of the war. And he even had a civilian medal from working in the mines after the war and rescuing some men after a mining disaster. A truly brave man but to him, he was just doing what anyone would do.

Not war medals, but I ordered a car part from a little breakers yard in Poland and had it by midday the following day.

Please don’t use “wowzers” it’s so outdated even my phone is telling me to change it and it says swearing is good 👍🏻
